Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 19, 2024

On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-1. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, DH Jimmy Crooks, singled, doubled, walked twice, drove in three and scored twice for Springfield. Other standouts include Mike Antico, Ixan Henderson, Darlin Moquete, Leonel Sequera and Ian Petrutz.

Memphis 9 at Jacksonville 10

Despite four home runs, a late bullpen collapse with a 9-2 lead caused the Memphis Redbirds (21-24) to fall to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-20, MIA) by a 10-9 score on Sunday at 121 Financial Ballpark.  Starter Michael McGreevy threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

Iván Herrera started the scoring in the top of the fourth with an RBI groundout.

The Jumbo Shrimp responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-RBI double.

The Redbirds continued to pile on with César Prieto’s two-run dinger.

Thomas Saggese gave Memphis their third homer of the day with his two-run shot to left-center field.

José Fermín added another one to the tally with a solo longball. With six outs to go, the Redbirds led, 9-2.

Jacksonville fought back in the eighth with back-to-back-to-back homers, the first a three-run homer, and an RBI double. The home team walked it off in the ninth with an RBI single and a fielder’s choice that brought home the winning run.

Connor Thomas struck out the only batter he faced.  Riley O’Brien threw a scoreless inning.  Jacob Bosiokovic threw a scoreless inning while walking and striking out one.

That was the good news. What happened in the final two innings was not.

Andre Granillo did not record an out while yielding four runs on three hits while walking one.  Ryan Loutos pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on three hits while walking two.  Chris Roycroft took his fourth loss this season, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits while walking one in 2/3 of an inning pitched.  Memphis allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 14 hits while walking seven and striking out four.

Antico went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored.  Fermín was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Alfonso Rivas III went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.  The Redbirds totaled nine runs on 12 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Memphis Redbirds dropped four of six at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.  They will face the Charlotte Knights (21-22, CWS) on Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand.

Springfield 12 at Frisco 8

The Springfield Cardinals (28-17) defeated the Frisco RoughRiders (24-21, TEX) 12-8 on Sunday at Riders Field.  Starter Zane Mills threw three innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one.

The RoughRiders responded in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. They took the lead in the second with a two-RBI double.

Springfield fought back in the fifth with R.J. Yeager’s RBI double, Chandler Redmond’s two-RBI double, Noah Mendlinger’s RBI single, Carlos Linarez’s RBI single, and Bryan Torres’ RBI groundout.

Leonardo Taveras took the mound in the sixth and allowed a two-RBI single, and in the seventh, he gave up the tying two-run home run.

The visitors broke the game open in the ninth with Torres’ RBI single, Jimmy Crooks’ three-RBI double, and a wild pitch that brought Crooks home.

The home team could only muster one run on an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Nathanael Heredia threw a scoreless inning while striking out two.  Edwin Nuñez also pitched a scoreless inning while striking out two.  Taveras threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out one.  Jack Ralston earned his first win this season, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and yielding a hit while striking out three.  Andrew Marrero threw an inning, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two.  Springfield allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits while walking one and striking out 11.

Crooks went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, three RBI, and two runs scored.  Redmond was 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.  Torres went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  The Cardinals totaled 12 runs on 17 hits with six walks, six extra-base hits, and eight strikeouts.

The first place Springfield Cardinals won five of six over the Frisco RoughRiders in their six-game road series.  The Cardinals will come home to face the Tulsa Drillers (22-22, LAD) on Tuesday.

Peoria 3 at Wisconsin 2

The Peoria Chiefs (24-24) held on for 3-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (28-19, MIL) on Sunday at Neuroscience Group Field.  Starter Ixan Henderson threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three.

The game was scoreless until the sixth when Timber Rattlers struck with a solo shot to left-center field.

The Chiefs tied the game in the eighth on Chase Davis’ RBI groundout.

Peoria took the lead for the first time in the top of the ninth with Darlin Moquete’s two-run bomb to left field.

In the home ninth, Wisconsin took one run back against reliever Osvaldo Berrios on an RBI single, but the Chiefs held on.

In his first relief appearance with the Chiefs, Darlin Saladin threw a scoreless inning, yielding one hit and walking one.  Berrios earned his second win this season, throwing two innings, and giving up one run on three hits while walking one and striking out one.  Peoria allowed two runs on seven hits while walking and striking out four.

Moquete went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.  Kade Kretzschmar was 2-for-2 with a walk.  Alex Iadisernia went 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch and a run scored.  The Chiefs totaled three runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Peoria Chiefs split their series at the first-place Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  The Chiefs will come home to face off against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (17-31, SD) on Tuesday.

Palm Beach 3, Jupiter 2

The Palm Beach Cardinals completed a comeback to win 3-2 over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Sunday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Leonel Sequera threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Hammerheads struck first in the fourth with an RBI groundout. They extended their lead in the top of the seventh when catcher Ryan Campos committed a throwing error while trying to throw out a runner stealing second that allowed the runner on third to score.

Anyelo Encarnacion put the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI groundout. The Cardinals tied the game at two apiece in the eighth with Campos’ sacrifice fly.

Palm Beach walked it off in the ninth with Jose Cordoba’s RBI double that plated Ian Petrutz.

Petrutz went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.  Bryce Madron was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.  Cordoba doubled and drove in one.  The Cardinals totaled three runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Henry Gomez earned his sixth win this season, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits and a walk while striking out one.  Palm Beach allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out six.

The Palm Beach Cardinals (32-14) split their series with the Jupiter Hammerheads (23-23, MIA) and remain in first place by seven games in the Florida State League East 46 games into the second half.  The Cardinals will travel to St. Lucie to take on the St. Lucie Mets (16-29, NYM) in a seven-game week with a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s game: at St. Lucie, TBD vs. TBD 5:10 CT.

DSL Cardinals – Off Sunday

The DSL Cardinals (26-25) were off Sunday.  The Cardinals are in fifth place in the DSL Central, 12 games behind the Giants Black.

They will continue play on Monday against the DSL Arizona Red (34-20, ARI) at home. The Cards’ season finale will be on Tuesday.

Monday’s game: vs. DSL Arizona Red, TBD vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
