Also BS Southeast and Southwest ExtraYou just never know, Cardinal in France. Stranger things have happened.
But if the Cardinals have any chance whatsoever of somehow someway playing beyond game 162, they have to win tonight. Obviously, beating the Brewers tonight guarantees them nothing, but losing unequivocally eliminates them…..though in my mind, they dropped the post season ball during their recent visit to Wrigley. By the way, we sure miss your fantastic din-din revelations, CardinalinFrance…..but who could blame you. Naturally, rooting for such an uninspiring team greatly takes the starch…..or the fun….out of the summer. Think about some of your favorite summers over the course of your life and you’ll most likely see quality Cardinal teams associated with them.Let’s take a quick gander at memorable baseball happenings from yesteryear on his date, August 21st, shall we?
1930 – Chick Hafey of your St. Louis Cardinals hit for the cycle and drove in 5 runs in ST. Louis’ 16-6 lambasting of Philadelphia’s Phillies.
1931 – Babe Ruth whacked career home run #600 in the Bronx Bombers thrilling 11-7 defeat of the St. Louis Browns.
1947 – First Little League World Series was played in beautiful Williamsport, Pennsylvania…..which was won by the home team, the famed Williamsport Maynard Midgets.
1972 – Steve Carlton of Philadelphia had his 15 game win streak broken at the hands of Phil Niekro and the Atlanta Braves 2-1 in 11 innings. One must wonder how many pitches Carlton and Niekro accrued in the extra inning affair?
1975 – Chicago cub pitching brothers Rick and Paul Reuschel combined to toss a 7-0 shutout over the Dodgers…..the first and only baseball brother combo shutout in MLB history.
2007 – Garret Anderson of the Angels drove in a team record 10 runs in their 18-9 throttling of the Yanks.
Great highlights, Pugs! With the Cardinals in all likelihood playing out the string at this point, it is good to see some other baseball news.
Speaking of Steve Carlton and August 1972 – I was in Busch Stadium II this very month and that very year and saw Carlton defeat our Cardinals. It was later in the month – I would need to look up the actual date. I was a teenager and a buddy and I made the trip to see a couple of series – first against the reigning champion Pirates and then the Phillies. My buddy’s dad set it all up for us. It was a trip of a lifetime back then.
I guess it’s their job to continue pretending we’re in a “playoff push”. Judging by the seats filled at last nights game, I don’t think Cardinal Nation is buying it.
He could sort of block them like a goalie. A leg save and a beauty. Baker is standing on his head out there.
The lineups still are really bad. When Donovan is your cleanup hitter something is wrong.
At this point I hope and pray that Mozeliak, Marmol, and the hitting coach are gone after this year.
Maybe we should start a thread on who the 2025 manager will be?
You almost knew that it was time to strike the colors when Lance Lynn went on the IL right after the deadline. Not only have the Cardinals been mired in a tailspin since he went down on July 31st, but they’ve also been an incredibly boring team since the loss of the Bavarian Bismarck Beast.
Donovan has a 113 ops+ for the month and he has scored three runs, and has three RBI, in 65 PA’s. Yep, rats, something has gone bad.
Cardinals should look at hiring the Padres Manager….and firing everyone on the current Management team
Kind of premature but Shildt has the Padres 17 games over .500 and is on the Dodgers heels for the Division Championship along with the Diamondbacks. This after taking over a team that missed the playoffs last year and lost their best player to free agency. Similar to his seasons with the Cardinals he has had a strong second half. I call him Second Half Shildtie.
I first saw Shildt when he was managing the Johnson City Cardinals in the former Appalachian League. It was very apparent to me that his players were motivated and playing the game with confidence. I thought at the time that we have someone special here. It was clear that the players were enjoying playing the game. I also got to see Oscar Tavares in those games. He was sensational.
Schildt’s now working on his 5th season as a Big League manager and has yet to turn in a sub .500 unit of work. His SD team is currently 17 over even, so the odds say they’ll finish the ’24 season above the even mark. I’d guess Schildt’s earning the reputation as a more than capable occupant of the top step of a Big League dugout.
Yep i think you can point to shildts firing as the start of this downward spiral. I know the team did well that next season but it still feels like the turning point.

LF Tommy Pham RI would flip Burly and Donovan in the order then flip Noot and Carp. Not that it matters as there is some saying about deck chairs on the Titanic.
We done for 2024. Just want to see something positive for 2025. Luken Baker should play. Find out. We know what Goldy brings. If they move Pallante to the bp to play the contracts of Matz and Lance I will lose my mind. ( I suppose lose suggests future tense. But you know what I mean.)
I have said for a month or so now that I would flip Burly and Donovan. But as you said gscottar, at this point it does not matter. You could try going retro and put Carpenter at lead off and it would not move the needle. This club is a sinking ship.
Just need to finish out the schedule, then clear out some management personnel and start the rebuild.
The replay was obvious that Arenado was out at second. The home team announcers saw it, too, but couldn’t bring themselves to admit it. Very nice play up the middle by the Brewers’ Adames and Turang.
