RHP Sonny Gray (11-7, 3.93) vs. RHP Clayton Kershaw (1-2, 3.50)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
Also BS South and Southwest ExtraAugust 18, 2024 at 8:55 am #264701On paper this should be a classic.
August 18, 2024 at 9:37 am #264703It sure should be a classic, ZTR. I believe we’ve hit Kershaw fairly well over the years and everyone has been whacking Gray around of late, so this should be your garden variety slugfest. Let’s call it 9-7…….but flip a coin as to who will be a victor……so please allow me a moment to grab a coin….ok I have a quarter. Heads Cards win and tails Dodgers prevail…..and unfortunately the flip is tails, so it looks like it’ll be 9-7 Los Angeles. And as a quick aside, it was a sad day on Chicago’s south side last evening as Houston officially put an end to the White Sox playoff aspirations for 2024 with a 6-1 drubbing of the Sox. And what’s for din-din today? I think I’ll wander on over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse for a bone-in ribeye, baked potato loaded to the gills with butter and sour cream, asparagus spears and buttered mushrooms. Then afterwards, I’ll cruise on over through the drive thru lane at Popeye’s and snag myself 3 apple cinnamon pies.
August 18, 2024 at 9:45 am #264704Kershaw is still building up stamina. His last start was his best one so far going 5 2/3 innings. Been sitting around 80 pitches or so the last 3 starts.
Oh no! No one has brought up that he’s a lefty. We’re doomed!
Regardless it’ll be interesting to see what lineup Oli and Bowtie throw out there. Will they displace A lefty for the weak hitting Jordan Walker for the matchup or stick him on the bench where he likely belongs and add another lefty to the lineup and watch them flail away for 2-3 turns through the order while Kershaw is in. Def need Pages and Contreras in the lineup today you would think.
August 18, 2024 at 10:30 am #264707Kershaw pitches with his brain and much as with his arm. Hitting him is one thing and scoring off him is another, and scoring enough off him to win is yet another. Our offense isn’t very sophisticated. We are not good at doing what it takes when we need to. On the other hand, a team that is significantly outperforming its run differential can be dangerous. You never know what will happen until it does.
August 18, 2024 at 10:42 am #264709In 43 plate appearances now for the Rays, Carlson has a .913 OPS, .4 WAR, 3 home runs, a stolen base and is hitting .270.
At least we got that dead weight off the roster!
August 18, 2024 at 10:53 am #264712O’Neill’s OPS+ is 145.
August 18, 2024 at 11:13 am #264713Nice din-din there Pugs!
I am also going to have a ribeye. Mine will be in the air fryer, however. Plus I’ll have some mashed potatoes/gravy, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew and a few potato chips. Then for dessert a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch for the rest of the game.
I went to the Digestive Care place on Friday about my choking and coughing issues. Going back for the Barium thing on the 10th and then having an Endoscopy on the 12th.
I am going to call this one a 6-3 Redbird winner today with Willson Contreras getting off the schneid with a long dong to left.

August 18, 2024 at 11:30 am #264717Flaherty is looking pretty good too. I know it happens to all franchises but man it sure does feel like an inordinate % of struggling players that leave StL ‘find’ their game.
Mo and a bunch of his underlings just have to go and the sooner the better…
August 18, 2024 at 11:50 am #264718Good luck Rat.

Scott IIAugust 18, 2024 at 12:48 pm #264721Teams with a high run differential are usually teams that are good in multiple facets of the game. They aren’t dependent on just offense or pitching. The Cardinals are not such a team. They outran their run differential most of the year by relying on solid enough pitching and defense. Their offense has flatlined almost all year. They were able to stay above water by winning a lot of close games. Is that luck? No, it means that your rotation is just good enough and that your bullpen and defense are pretty good. Nothing lucky about those wins but it is hard to sustain for 162 games. There is also the mental stress of playing so many close games.
Now that the pitching is faltering and getting tired and our best defender (Siani) is on the shelf and we are entering the most difficult part of our schedule it is quite reasonable to assume the losses are going to pile up because we can’t consistently outslug teams.
August 18, 2024 at 1:22 pm #264726There’s only been a few high priced free agents I thought would be good investments. Bryce Harper was one. So was Mookie.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGorman, Noot and Burly sit again. When Oli is in a postseason chase, he trusts the same lefty to start.
Scott over Noot in CF then becomes forced.August 18, 2024 at 1:53 pm #264731
jj-cf-stlParticipantA quick inning hasn’t happened yet for Gray.
August 18, 2024 at 1:57 pm #264732
jj-cf-stlParticipantWriggled out of the top of the third.
August 18, 2024 at 2:06 pm #264734
jj-cf-stlParticipant3 up 3 down for Gray
Just one single the first time thru, for us.
August 18, 2024 at 2:23 pm #264735Not looking good. Gray has tried to get that outside call he needs and the ump is calling it right.
After Ohtani homers it’s 1-3 with no one out.
August 18, 2024 at 2:32 pm #264737Were lucky it’s only 2-0. Gray has been mediocre all game.
Oh lookie! Sean Armstrong is warming up. Let’s see the complaints about him pitching in a situation he should be pitching in.
August 18, 2024 at 2:36 pm #264738
jj-cf-stlParticipantOpportunity here for Walker….
August 18, 2024 at 2:47 pm #264739B2B singles from Pages and Scott with no out. Will we sacrifice or swing away?
August 18, 2024 at 2:51 pm #264740Simply pathetic!
August 18, 2024 at 2:58 pm #264741
jj-cf-stlParticipantLibby pitching mad? I like it!
August 18, 2024 at 3:10 pm #264742
jj-cf-stlParticipantWe should consider hitting a few x-base hits.
