The St. Louis Cardinals system went 3-2 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis DH Jordan Walker had a home run, triple, walk, three RBI, and two runs scored. Other standouts include Zack Thompson, Matt Koperniak, Jimmy Crooks, Jacob Buchberger, Tre Richardson, Leonel Sequera and J.J. Wetherholt.

The Memphis Redbirds (18-20) destroyed the Gwinnett Stripers (18-20, ATL) 8-2 on Saturday at AutoZone Park. Starter Zack Thompson threw four innings, allowing one run on a hit while walking three and striking out five.
The Stripers struck first with a solo homer to center field in the top of the third.
The Redbirds tied the game in the bottom of the third with Luken Baker’s sacrifice fly.
Memphis broke the game open in the sixth with Baker’s solo bomb to left-center field, Nick Dunn’s two-RBI single, and Jordan Walker’s three-run moonshot to left field to make the score 7-1.

The home team added a final insurance run in the seventh on Matt Koperniak’s solo shot to center field.

Gwinnett scored one in the ninth on an RBI groundout to cut their final deficit to 8-2.
Ryan Shreve earned his first win this season, throwing two innings, and allowing one hit while striking out two. Chris Roycroft pitched two scoreless innings, yielding two hits and a walk while striking out three. Ryan Loutos threw an inning, giving up a run on two hits while striking out one. Memphis allowed two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out 11.
Walker was 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored. Koperniak was 3-for-5 with a homer, a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Baker went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored. The Redbirds totaled eight runs on 12 hits with eight walks and six strikeouts.
Sunday’s game: vs. Gwinnett, LH Steven Matz (MLB rehab) vs. TBD 1:05 CT.
The Springfield Cardinals (23-15) beat the San Antonio Missions (17-20, SD) 7-3 on Saturday at Hammons Field. Starter Alex Cornwell threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Missions struck first in the top of the first with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the first on Jimmy Crooks’ RBI double and Matt Lloyd’s RBI single.

They took the lead in the second with Bryan Torres’ RBI single that plated Jacob Buchberger.

Buchberger’s bases-loaded walk in the third extended the Cardinals’ lead to 4-0.
Springfield added another run in the fourth on Lloyd’s RBI single.

San Antonio earned one run back in the sixth with an RBI double.
Buchberger’s two-RBI double in the seventh gave Springfield two more insurance runs, making the score 7-3.

Crooks was 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Buchberger went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI, and a run scored. Torres was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. The Cardinals totaled seven runs on 12 hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Zane Mills earned his first win this season, throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run, none earned, on two hits while walking one and striking out three. Jack Ralston threw two innings, yielding one hit while striking out five. Matt Svanson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Springfield allowed three runs, two earned, on 10 hits while walking two and striking out 10.

Sunday’s game: vs. San Antonio, LHP Quinn Mathews (1-1, 3.31) vs. Victor Lizarraga RHP (4-6, 4.19) 6:05 CT.
The Peoria Chiefs (21-20) were crushed by the Cedar Rapids Kernels (20-21, MIN) 7-1 on Saturday at Dozer Park. Starter Pete Hansen took his seventh loss this season, throwing 5 1/3 innings, and allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits while walking four and striking out five.
The Kernels took an early lead in the second with an RBI single before the Chiefs tied the game in the third on Tre Richardson’s RBI double.
The visitors regained the lead in the fifth with a solo home run to left-center field. They extended their lead in the sixth with a two-RBI single and a fielding error by shortstop Miguel Villarroel allowed another runner to score.
Reliever Tyler Bradt walked a batter with the bases loaded to make the score 6-1 in the eighth. Dionys Rodriguez replaced Bradt and allowed a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give Cedar Rapids a 7-1 lead.
Bradt threw 2 2/3 innings, yielding a run on two hits while walking two and striking out two. Rodriguez pitched an inning, giving up a run while walking two. Peoria allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits while walking eight and striking out seven.
Richardson was 3-for-4 including a double and an RBI. Chase Adkison and Johnfrank Salazar were the only other Chiefs to record a hit. The Chiefs totaled a run on five hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts.
Sunday’s game: vs. Cedar Rapids, LHP Ixan Henderson (1-0, 3.00) vs. John Klein RHP (7-2, 4.56) 2:05 CT.
The Palm Beach Cardinals’ (28-11) win streak ended at nine with their 6-5 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays (19-20, TOR) on Saturday at TD Ballpark. Starter Leonel Sequera threw six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.
The Blue Jays struck in the first with an RBI double.
The Cardinals took the lead in the third with J.J. Wetherholt’s two-RBI double.
Dunedin tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single.
Wetherholt’s RBI single in the fifth gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
A Dunedin sacrifice fly in the seventh tied the game at three apiece.
Palm Beach regained the lead in the top of the eighth on Jon Jon Gazdar’s RBI groundout.
Reliever Augusto Calderon walked a batter and plunked two with the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Blue Jays a 6-4 lead.
The Beach Birds mounted a comeback that fell short with Brayden Jobert reaching on an error that plated Ryan Campos to make the score 6-5.
Wetherholt went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Gazdar was 0-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and two runs scored. Campos went 0-for-1 with four walks and a run scored. The Cardinals totaled five runs on five hits with 11 walks and seven strikeouts.
Calderon took his sixth loss this season, pitching 1 2/3 innings, and yielding four runs, none earned, on a hit while walking two and striking out four. Nelfy Ynfante struck out the one batter he faced. Palm Beach allowed six runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
Sunday’s game: at Dunedin, RH Gerardo Salas (6-4, 2.74) vs. TBD 11:00 CT.
DSL Cardinals 8 at DSL Rangers Blue 7
The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (24-22) defeated the DSL Rangers Blue (24-23) 8-7 on Saturday at the Texas Rangers DR Complex. Starter Reiner Lopez threw two innings, allowing three runs on one hit while walking one and plunking two.
The Rangers took an early lead in the first when third baseman Yoerny Junco committed a throwing error that allowed a run to score. The home team extended the lead in the second with a two-RBI triple.
The Cardinals put a run on the board in the fourth on Paulo Asprilla’s RBI single. They tied the game in the fifth when two consecutive wild pitches allowed Andru Arthur and Facundo Velasquez to score. The visitors took the lead in the fifth with Junco’s two-RBI double.
The home team regained the lead in the seventh on two RBI singles and a fielding error by the first baseman Christian Saez which let two runs score.
Junco’s RBI single, Velasquez’s RBI single, and a throwing error after Arthur stole third and then came home gave the Cardinals an 8-7 lead.
Junco went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and a run scored. Arthur was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Velasquez went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. The Cardinals totaled eight runs on 11 hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.
Jesus Garcia pitched three scoreless innings, yielding two hits while striking out four. In his debut, Emisael Carrera threw a scoreless 2/3 of an inning while walking two and striking out one. Alan Reyes threw an inning, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Bernard Mack earned his second win this season, throwing 1 1/3 innings, and giving up a hit while striking out one. Brailyn Paulino earned his first save this season, pitching a scoreless inning while conceding a hit and a walk. The Cardinals allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits while walking six and striking out seven.
The DSL Cardinals do not play on Sunday.
