Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 9, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-4 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach RH Jose Davila, threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Other standouts include Alfonso Rivas, Inohan Paniagua, Tre Richardson and Ian Petrutz.

Memphis 4, Gwinnett 5

The Memphis Redbirds’ (17-19) comeback attempt fell short in their 5-4 loss to the Gwinnett Stripers (17-19, ATL) on Thursday at AutoZone Park.  Starter Nick Raquet took his sixth loss this season, throwing 3 1/3 innings, and allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Stripers struck first in the fourth with a solo shot to left field, an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly. They extended their lead in the seventh with a solo homer to center field. Gwinnett added one final insurance run with an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Down 5-0, the Redbirds finally put runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth as Alfonso Rivas III and Arquímedes Gamboa went back-to-back with a three-run bomb and a solo moonshot to make the score 5-4.

Thomas Saggese went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch and a run scored.  Gamboa was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.  Rivas III was 1-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, and a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled four runs on nine hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Victor Santos threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out three.  Ryan Shreve pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits while walking two.  Jacob Bosiokovic yielded one hit in 1/3 of an inning pitched.  Memphis allowed five runs on 12 hits while walking six and striking out six.

Friday’s game: vs. Gwinnett, RHP Gordon Graceffo (8-5, 4.00) vs. TBD 7:05 CT.

Springfield 1, San Antonio 4

The Springfield Cardinals (22-14) lost 4-1 to the San Antonio Missions (SD, 16-19) on Thursday at Hammons Field. In his third start off the IL, Tink Hence took his third loss of the season, pitching 3 2/3 innings, and allowing two runs on one hit while walking two and striking out five. The right-hander threw 54 pitches (31 strikes) before being pulled.

The Missions responded in the third when second baseman Noah Mendlinger committed a throwing error that allowed a run to score and Jimmy Crooks caught a runner stealing second, but the runner on third raced home.

San Antonio added two insurance runs in the fifth with an RBI single and Edwin Nuñez, working in relief, threw a wild pitch that let another runner come home to score.

In his first action out of the bullpen in months, Nuñez threw 2 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out two.  Nathanael Heredia pitched a scoreless inning while striking out three.  Wilfredo Pereira pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit while striking out two.  Springfield allowed four runs on five hits while walking six and striking out 12.

Dakota Harris went 2-for-4 with a double.  Lloyd was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Nathan Church hit 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled one run on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Peoria 4, Cedar Rapids 5

The Peoria Chiefs (20-19) blew a late lead to lose 5-4 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (19-20, MIN) on Thursday at Dozer Park.  Inohan Paniagua threw five innings, allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out four.

The Kernels opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI groundout.

The Chiefs responded in the bottom of the second with Miguel Villarroel’s RBI double and Tre Richardson’s two-RBI triple. Peoria added an insurance run in the sixth on Richardson’s RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 4-1.

Benjamin Arias replaced Paniagua in the sixth and in the eighth, he put two men on before being replaced by Hunter Hayes who allowed an RBI single and a three-RBI double.

Arias pitched 2 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one.  Hayes took his first loss this season, throwing 1 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two.  Peoria pitching allowed five runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out seven.

Richardson went 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI.  Villarroel was 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.  Won-Bin Cho went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled four runs on nine hits while three and striking out six.

Friday’s game: vs. Cedar Rapids, RHP Hancel Rincon (7-6, 4.08) vs. C.J. Culpepper RHP (2-1, 2.88) 7:05 CT.

Palm Beach 4 at Dunedin 2 (10 innings)

On Thursday at TD Ballpark, the Palm Beach Cardinals (27-10) beat the Dunedin Blue Jays (18-19, TOR) 4-2 in 10 innings to take their eighth straight win.

The Cardinals organization’s July Pitcher of the Month continues his standout mound work. Starter Jose Davila threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Ian Petrutz’s RBI groundout in the fourth gave the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Cade McGee’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh doubled their lead to 2-0.

The Blue Jays came back in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double and they scored again when pitcher Nolan Sparks committed a throwing error.

Petrutz’s RBI single in the 10th drove in the winning run and Josh Kross added an insurance run with an RBI double.

McGee was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Petrutz was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  Kross went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a walk.  The Cardinals totaled four runs on six hits with eight walks and 13 strikeouts while hitting 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranding 12 men on base.

Sparks threw an inning, yielding two runs, one earned, on one hit while walking two and striking out two.  Angel Cuenca earned his fourth win this season, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out three in two innings.  Luis Gastelum earned his third save this season, pitching a scoreless inning while striking out two.  Palm Beach allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while walking five and striking out 14.

Friday’s game: at Dunedin, RH Chen-Wei Lin (7-5, 3.24) vs. Fernando Perez RHP (3-1, 3.67) 5:30 CT.

DSL Cardinals 1, DSL Arizona Red 6

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (22-22) were defeated by the DSL Arizona Red (31-17, ARI) 6-1 on Thursday at the St. Louis Cardinals DR Complex.  Starter Guanchi Martinez took his third loss this season, throwing four innings, and allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out two.

Arizona struck first in the top of the third when first baseman Christian Saez made a fielding error that allowed one run to score and a two-RBI double extended their lead to 3-0.

Yoerny Junco’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third plated Yairo Padilla to cut the deficit to 3-1.

An RBI single against reliever Jose Suriel in the seventh added an insurance run to make the score 4-1. The visitors added two more in the eighth with an RBI double and an RBI single.

Suriel pitched three innings, yielding one run on three hits while walking one and striking out four.  Jarol Baez threw two innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.  The Cardinals allowed six runs, four earned, on 11 hits while walking four and striking out seven.

Brayan Amoroso went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Junco went 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Padilla was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled one run on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Friday’s game: at DSL Mariners (13-32, SEA), RH Branneli Franco (0-3, 6.82 vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
