Cardinals Minor League Notebook – July 26, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 5-1 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Chen-Wei Lin, tossed six innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts for Palm Beach. Other standouts include Jordan Walker, Brycen Mautz, Joshua Baez, Leonardo Bernal, Brayden Jobert and Andrew Bolivar.

Memphis 6 at Columbus 5

The Memphis Redbirds (11-13) topped the Columbus Clippers (14-9, CLE) on Thursday at Huntington Park.  Starter Ian Bedell threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while walking five and striking out four.

The Redbirds took an early lead in the first with César Prieto’s RBI single.

They extended their lead in the second on Gavin Collins’ RBI single.

Memphis discovered the longball in the top of the third when Jordan Walker and Iván Herrera went back-to-back and Luken Baker drilled a ball into right-center field to make the score 5-0. Baker leads the International League with 27 long balls.

The Clippers responded with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Walker’s sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth added an insurance run to increase their lead to 6-2.

Columbus added two more in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run and an RBI triple

An RBI single in the eighth was the only offense that the home team could put up for the rest of the game.

Andre Granillo threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.  Jacob Bosiokovic earned his fourth win this season, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out one.  Kyle Leahy pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one run on three hits while striking out two.  Ryan Loutos earned his 10th save in 10 tries this season, yielding a hit while striking out two in an inning pitched.  Memphis allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking six and striking out nine.

Walker went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.  Collins was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  Baker was 1-for-3 with a homer, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled six runs on 11 hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Friday’s game: at Columbus, RHP Victor Santos (3-6, 6.54) vs. Connor Gillispie (3-7, 4.22) 6:05 CT.

Springfield 3. Corpus Christi 2

The Springfield Cardinals (15-9) won a close one over the Corpus Christi Hooks (6-17, HOU) 3-2 on Thursday at Hammons Field.  Starter Quinn Mathews pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five. The Hooks struck first in the third with a solo homer to left field.

The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth when Jacob Buchberger hit an RBI triple and Noah Mendlinger drove him in with an RBI double.

Corpus Christi tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single.

Springfield regained the lead in the sixth on R.J. Yeager’s solo longball to left field.

Yeager was 1-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.  Rehabbing Tommy Edman was 2-for-4 with a double.  Buchberger went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled three runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts.

Benito Garcia earned his first win this season, yielding one hit while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.  Matt Svanson earned his 16th save this season, throwing two scoreless innings, and giving up two hits while striking out two.  Springfield allowed two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out 10.

Friday’s game: vs. Corpus Christi, LHP Alex Cornwell (4-2, 6.22) vs. TBD 7:05 CT.

Peoria 5 at South Bend 3

The Peoria Chiefs (13-14) beat the South Bend Cubs (9-18, CHC) 5-3 on Thursday at Four Winds Field.  Starter Brycen Mautz threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out six.

The Cubs took an early lead in the second with a solo shot to right-center field.

The Chiefs responded in the fourth with Joshua Baez’s three-run dinger to right field.

South Bend tied the game in the seventh with a two-RBI single.

Peoria took the lead and held on for the win with Leonardo Bernal’s two-RBI single in the ninth.

Brody Moore was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.  Bernal went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.  Baez was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored.  The Chiefs totaled five runs on 12 hits with seven walks and 12 strikeouts.

Tanner Jacobson threw 1 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out three.  Roy Garcia earned his third win, throwing a scoreless inning, and giving up one hit and a walk while striking out two.  Osvaldo Berrios earned his fifth save, pitching a scoreless inning while striking out one.  Peoria allowed three runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out 12.

Friday’s game: at South Bend, RHP Inohan Paniagua (7-5, 3.32) vs. Ty Johnson RHP (0-3, 4.07) 6:05 CT.

Palm Beach 5 at St. Lucie 1

The Palm Beach Cardinals (17-8) defeated the St. Lucie Mets (8-19, NYM) 5-1 on Thursday at Clover Park.  Starter Chen-Wei Lin earned his sixth win this season, pitching six innings, and allowing one run on one hit while striking out nine.

Jose Cordoba’s two-RBI double in the fourth gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Brayden Jobert’s three-run moonshot in the top of the sixth to center field extended their lead to 5-0.

The Mets put one on the board in the bottom of the sixth when second baseman Trey Paige made a fielding error.

Randel Clemente threw a scoreless inning, striking out two.  Hunter Hayes pitched two scoreless innings, yielding one hit while striking out two.  Palm Beach allowed one run on two hits while walking none and striking out 13.

Jobert was 1-for-3 with a home run three RBI, and a run scored.  Cordoba was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.  Chase Davis went 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled five runs on eight hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts.

Friday’s game: at St. Lucie, TBD vs. TBD 5:10 CT.

FCL Cardinals 2 at FCL Marlins 5 (7 innings)

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (20-33) fell to the FCL Marlins (39-15, MIA) 5-2 in their final game this season on Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium Complex.  Starter Ronny Oliver took his fourth loss this season, pitching four innings, and allowing four runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four.

The Cardinals struck first in the top of the first when Miguel Vargas’ RBI groundout plated Jonathan Mejia.

The Marlins responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, an RBI groundout, and a two-RBI triple.

Yancel Guerrero scored to make it 4-2 after the opposing pitcher threw a wild pitch in the third.

A solo homer against reliever Samuel Fabian gave the Marlins that run back in the sixth. Fabian threw two innings, yielding one on two hits while striking out two.  The Cardinals allowed five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

Mejia went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.  Guerrero was 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Vargas had one walk.  The Cardinals totaled two runs on two hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts while hitting 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

DSL Cardinals 11, DSL Cubs Red 2

The DSL Cardinals (17-17) dominated the DSL Cubs Red (14-21, CHC) 11-2 on Thursday at the St. Louis Cardinals DR Complex.  Starter Andrew Bolivar threw four scoreless innings, allowing one walk while striking out five.

The Cardinals took an early 5-0 lead in the first with Rainiel Rodriguez’ RBI single, Christian Saez’s two-RBI double, and Fernando Roquez’s two-run bomb to right field.

The home team added two more in the second on Rodriguez’s RBI groundout and Bracewell Taveras’s sacrifice fly.

A fielding error by the Cubs’ second baseman allowed Brayan Amoroso to come home in the third.

Facundo Velasquez’s RBI double and Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly in the fifth gave the Cardinals a 10-run lead.

The Cubs finally put some runs on the board in the top of the sixth when a fielding error left fielder Roquez let one run score and an RBI double drove in another.

Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Roquez was 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, three RBI, and a run scored.  Saez went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.  The Cardinals totaled 11 runs on 11 hits with nine walks and six strikeouts.

Xavier Cruz earned his second win this season, pitching a scoreless inning, and allowing one hit.  Reiner Lopez threw one inning, giving up two runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out two.  Jarol Baez pitched two scoreless innings, yielding a hit while walking two.  Justin Hernandez threw a scoreless inning, striking out two.  The Cardinals allowed two runs, none earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out nine.

Friday’s game: vs. DSL Blue Jays (21-14, TOR), TBD vs. TBD 10:00 CT.
