Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJuly 28, 2024 at 4:13 am #261834Outside of last year’s debacle, this team is pretty much exactly where and what they’ve been for almost a decade now.
They are scuffling along at basically .500 waiting for 2/3 of the other teams to throw in the towel so they can go on a little ‘run’ late in the year and try to sneak into the post season tournament – maybe even win a crappy division.
They’ve made it in 1/2 the time but, outside of the 2019 outlier run to get destroyed in the NLCS, they get easily dismissed from the playoffs.
If you look up ‘average’ in the dictionary the Cardinals are the example given. I’ve used this before but being average means you are the cream of the crap.
July 28, 2024 at 5:11 am #261835At least we won’t have to face Winker today. He’s been shipped off to the Mets.
I expect an uneventful trade deadline for the Redbirds.
And din-din today will be a New York Strip steak in the air fryer, some jumbo crinkle cut french fries in the oven, a coca-cola, and a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog tune in from the couch.

July 28, 2024 at 8:21 am #261849About a month ago, I said the Cards had an easy schedule most of July and likely would coast to a few games above .500 tricking us into thinking we are a contender. I don’t think a full sell is in order, but a reshuffling of the deck chairs while optimizing trade values may be needed.
I’m still a proponent of trading Helsey if we can get a near MLB ready RH batter for him. I could see Carlson being traded just because he has worn out his welcome here it appears. I would try to shuffle some of our 2B logjam and upper minors SP logjam for Fedde since he has an extra year of control. Maybe Saggesse + Graceffo for Fedde. They could maybe want Scott as he is still being ranked highly by prospect evaluators and I would give him up easily for Fedde given we have Siani.
For the 2nd half, I’m giving Edman all the playing time I can to see if he is healthy for next year, and to increase his trade value for the off-season.
July 28, 2024 at 8:29 am #261851Our run differential is -49 and this our expected record is 47-57. We have been very lucky to have the record we do, although I’m not sure it is a good thing since we think we may be contenders.
July 28, 2024 at 8:50 am #261855This one is an easy one. I don’t care if the pitching match-up today featured Brandon Crawford vs Jake Irvin. You bet the ranch and all of it’s inhabitants on the St. Louis Cardinals to win. The same can almost be said for KC and Milwaukee winning too, but let’s just concentrate on the Cards-Nats game shall we. Now you have to bet extra big as the Cards should be favored fairly heavily. So empty your checking, savings, CD, money market and any and all retirement accounts……every last penny…..also, get quick loans on any real estate holdings and if there are any piggy banks hanging around, then by all means, bust into the rascals. At the risk of coming across braggadociously, I maintain a documented 94% success rate on these “bet the ranch” games, so you shouldn’t have to break the least bit of sweat in betting this one……rest easy…..kick back and enjoy the ballgame and watch the moola roll in. And what’s for din-din one may inquire? I think a trip over to Johnny’s Steakhouse in beautiful Sun Prairie is in the Cards, where I think I’ll opt for the bone-in ribeye, succulent shrimp cocktail and broccolini. Then as a swan-song I’ll drift on over to Popeye’s drive thru lane to snatch 2 apple cinnamon pies.
July 28, 2024 at 10:57 am #261864“This is my home. This is my team,” Gallegos told MLB.com following the Cards’ forgettable 14-3 loss to the Nationals. “I like the city and I like the people, and I play for them. I’ve always enjoyed the game and I’ve always tried to be better for the people of this city.” Giovanni Gallegos
“I like this guy a ton,” Marmol said of Gallegos, who struck out four hitters over 1 2/3 innings on Saturday. “You look at this guy’s workload over the last few years and he’s been a horse for us. So, whenever someone has a down period, it’s easy to throw them aside, but I think highly of Gio.” you clowns didn’t like him that much.
Hours later he’s gone…not that it shouldn’t happen but this franchise continues to just amaze with its mismanagement.
July 28, 2024 at 11:12 am #261866There is no reason to open a 40 man slot until you need it, so I guess they need it now.
Middle reliever on the downslope, about to turn 33. I can see it. Hopefully somebody gives him a chance to continue.
Let’s assume Mo couldn’t get anything for him.

CF M. Siani LJuly 28, 2024 at 11:37 am #261868The bronze paperweights holding down the middle of the order. I think I am ok with that. It’s what they are paid to do, and there isn’t anyone else. If they fail to step up, then the offense fails.
Gorman not starting vs the lefty. He has 16 starts in July. 64 PAs. So, a part time player.
That is a blow similar to Walker’s set back.July 28, 2024 at 11:39 am #261869
jj-cf-stlParticipantThat’s Oil’s vs lefty lineup with the righty bats 4 of the first 5.
July 28, 2024 at 12:12 pm #261871
jj-cf-stlParticipantGorman ranks 7th in both catagories during July. If we only have 6 regulars, which includes those whose salary demands that they be regulars, then I guess we have 4 everyday players of 13. Sounds about right?
July 28, 2024 at 12:19 pm #261876
jj-cf-stlParticipantAs Paul Harvey said, “Now, for the rest of the story”.
Gorman ranks 3rd in ops and ops+ for July. If this is Oli trying to optimize Gorman with matchups, so be it.
July 28, 2024 at 12:28 pm #261879
jj-cf-stlParticipantMy phone changes Oli to Oil and sometimes I don’t catch it.
July 28, 2024 at 1:02 pm #261883I think the idea is to curate Gorman’s usage very carefully, trying to put him in situations where he might have the best chance, and just limp him through this season without being destroyed. We will see what he looks like next spring. He and Walker, see what they look like next spring. Our offense obviously needs a new set of brass ones in the middle of the order, and its going to be them or nothing.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI hope that is the approach for everyone from today going forward Bling, and we’re back to trying to optimize splits.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWillson HR and Pages is credited with an RBI double, driving in Noot.

Except everyone can be part time.
July 28, 2024 at 3:31 pm #261906
jj-cf-stlParticipantExactly, so there will be games where we leadoff Winn vs lefties, even with the flaws you pointed out, because he is the best option available. Can’t quit trying 🙃
July 28, 2024 at 3:39 pm #261907
jj-cf-stlParticipantGoldy walk-off. Here’s your game ball.
July 28, 2024 at 3:40 pm #261908Ah, good for Goldy. It is difficult to watch him struggling, so I am happy he got the walk off.
