I have the over. I am sure bling has the under and Shady is sure Burelson will carry us to the over. Lol
July 23, 2024 at 9:36 pm #261418Yes I have the under. I believe that our pen is unlikely to hold up. You heard it here.
July 23, 2024 at 10:15 pm #261421Obviously I hope I’m wrong, but I’d guess the under for several reasons. In line with the primary reason that’s already been mentioned, I’d also list the rotation and the absence of anything remotely resembling a functional bench or effective managerial leadership.
July 24, 2024 at 3:03 am #261425Under but I think 85-86 wins is attainable. That appears to be the pace they’ll be on. Not sure if that will lock up a playoff bid. Maybe a couple tweaks to the roster makes it like for a couple wins more. Who knows?
July 24, 2024 at 6:10 am #261429It will take the pitching to hold up and stay healthy, and one or two guys to ramp it up on offense in order to get to 90 wins.
We need at least one more guy to go “Burly” on us, say Gorman or even Siani.
We remind me some of the ‘64 team. Exactly 60 years ago we were struggling, going nowhere, but Lou Brock and then Mike Shannon came out of nowhere to spur the offense. Plus the established Bill White went from 32 RBI around July 1 to finish at 102. Then Barney Schultz stabilized the bullpen.
We need that – someone, or better yet two guys that really get going – say Arenado and Gorman. And in addition we can’t have a starter or bullpen pitcher go down. No room for error there.
July 24, 2024 at 6:29 am #261430We would have to go 37-24. Look at the schedule. Aug16 thru Sept. 8 should take care of any visions of win̈ning 90 games. I would be thrilled with 500 ball thru that stretch.
July 24, 2024 at 6:55 am #261432My feelings are similar to KCB. It has been an easier segment of the schedule. Last night, they were saying it was “like a playoff game”. Realistically, it is the likes of the Pirates and other .500-ish clubs that are competitive with these Cardinals. The best team they played this month was KC and the Cards were swept at home. They have scored three runs over two games in Pittsburgh. That won’t cut it.
P.S. With a few bold deadline acquisitions, that could change. But this is not a bold operation.
July 24, 2024 at 7:29 am #261435I’ll go under 90.
Without key acquisitions or a couple of bats ‘waking up’ I’ll go under 86.
July 24, 2024 at 7:36 am #261438Their win pct is .525, that works out to 85 wins. The Pythagorean w-l works out to 77 or 78 wins. I hope they can pull off 85 wins. The effect of deadline deals has been mentioned. I am nervous about that.
July 24, 2024 at 7:48 am #261441If anyone really feels strongly about it, you can go to FanDuel right now and place a bet over/under at 83.5 wins.
BTW, FanDuel is an Official Sports Betting Partner of MLB… lotsa money to be made together…

jj-cf-stlParticipant2nd Half Noot gets us to 90 wins.

stlcard25ParticipantI will take the under. Traditionally (not including last year) the Cards are a better second half team than first. They’d have to play really well to get to 90 wins, though. I’ll say they get to 87 or 88.
July 24, 2024 at 10:00 am #261469We will probably get a little boost at the deadline but I agree with stl25 that we look like a 87-88 win club. That should be good enough to get a wild card spot.
July 24, 2024 at 3:40 pm #261505Under! I’m thinking 85 is out ceiling! With hitters like ours 90 seems far fetched!
July 28, 2024 at 6:41 am #261837I’ll take the under
July 28, 2024 at 7:25 am #261842Current pace is 83 wins. Maybe the gamblers know what they’re doing! 😉
The schedule ahead is not going to get easier.
July 28, 2024 at 7:55 am #261847Brass paperweights in the lineup and regular paperweights on the bench is not a recipe for success. Some of the young hitters are doing great, but they are not middle of the order power bats. The pitching has carried us, but its looking like it will not hold up. There is nothing in AAA ready to help. I doubt anyone thinks Mo can or will fix all this at the deadline.
August 4, 2024 at 8:49 pm #263073Everybody gets one free chance to change their vote. There are 50 games left. We would have to go 33-17 to reach 90.
August 4, 2024 at 10:52 pm #263080Why?
August 5, 2024 at 6:38 am #26308490 seems so unlikely it isn’t worth debating. Maybe change the target to 80 wins? Current pace is 82-80 with the team having lost three of the last four series and the schedule getting tougher ahead.
August 5, 2024 at 9:18 am #263101I’ll take the under on 90 wins but the over on 80 wins.
To make the playoffs we know exactly what needs to happen:
1. We win 6 more games than the Brewers or,
2. We do 2 of the following 4 things; 2 more wins than the Mets, 4 more wins than the D-Backs and/or the Braves, or 5 more wins than the Padres.
At this point I’m pretty pessimistic that we will make the playoffs. Hopefully this team proves me wrong.
*Note – these are the wins needed to not have to rely on a tiebreaker.August 10, 2024 at 7:01 pm #263776Under
August 11, 2024 at 9:41 am #263901We are a little farther down the road from when this thread started, and 90 wins looks less probably.
It is also doubtful that there will be October baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. The stove will likely be warming up early this year.
August 11, 2024 at 12:23 pm #26390890. Absolutely not happening.
80. About right.
They’re doing everything to show us they are just a .500 team.
Other than Winn and Burleson’s breakout years, this season is completely unremarkable.
August 11, 2024 at 1:08 pm #263909Amongst the negatives, Noot’s disappointing season doesn’t get much attention. He’s been hurt, but when he’s not he hasn’t been a factor.
