RHP Miles Mikolas (7-7, 4.88) vs. RHP Jameson Taillon (6-4, 2.99)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJuly 13, 2024 at 11:19 pm #260324Redbirds need a win in this one. They start the 2nd half with a three game set in Atlanta. They will probably lose all three and once again fall 6-7 games back. This Braves series could doom the team.
July 14, 2024 at 6:35 am #260325Your unwavering positive attitude is to be admired, Rat. I think you go into ANY series believing that you can sweep the opposition. Besides, this 2024 Braves squad is not nearly as imposing as the 2023 version. But first things first. Jameson Taillon and his filthy tailing fastball can be very difficult to contend with. We need to get to him early……nine 1st inning runs may be a bit wishful thinking, but three tallies over the first 3 innings would bode well for taking down these cubbies 3 straight games after losing 5-1 in Game 1. So unusual in a 4 game series where a team loses, or even more-so, gets shut out in Game 1 and then comes back to win the next 3 games. We would need to check with Skip and all of the fine folks over at the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau for an exact percentage, but I would put the odds at about 1-150 of this event occurring with a team that was shut out in the first game and about 1-120 when a team simply loses the first game, such as our 5-1 setback in Game 1, and then comes storming back to take the next 3 games.
July 14, 2024 at 7:11 am #260326If you figure both us and the Cubs are roughly .500 teams, the odds of one team taking three straight are only about 1 in 8. So much better than 1 to 120, but still not likely.
But if Mikolas is on, we have closer to a 50-50 shot. Unfortunately with Miles he can be good or not so good. And who knows if they will use Helsley today. I am sure they prefer not to, but figure he will be ready if needed with some off days coming up.
July 14, 2024 at 7:42 am #260328Helsley should be available today. He was well rested (July 5) before yesterday’s 15 pitches.
July 14, 2024 at 8:51 am #260334This team appears to be one starting pitcher and one good RH bat away from being contenders instead of pretenders.
July 14, 2024 at 9:19 am #260335I would guess everyone but King is available today. Ollie did a nice job of managing the pen for the series to get it that way. Plus, Gray and Lynn stepped up and did their jobs to eat innings.
I’m not sure that we are truly a starter and right handed bat away from being good. The real issue is roster construction right now. For me, it comes down to the team’s willingness to let Carpenter go and then assuming Edman’s healthy return, let Crawford go. Then, the team has to be willing to sit Goldschmidt more frequently against right handed pitchers. Then add a right handed bat with some thump. I don’t care about adding a pitcher. That’s a lot of painful moves though. I’m not sure we’re willing to do that.

You didn’t factor in the team taking the 3 straight had lost the first game of the series, BicycleMike.
Hey what’s with the rash of TBA’s this year with the projected starting pitchers? There’s never been close to this many. Are teams trying to not give their opponents time to prepare for a certain pitcher or what?

This team has been hot for a few weeks. A month ago we were under .500. Two months ago we were in last place. We were never going to win anything with Marmol. It didn’t look like we were only a couple pieces short then. Lets see how we hold up running up to the deadline. Keep fingers crossed.
July 14, 2024 at 12:40 pm #260351I think we have a good shot at beating the Cubs anytime we don’t have to face Hendricks. The Cards and Cubs are similar teams in that they both have solid rotations and a sporadic offense. The difference is that the Cards have a much better bullpen. That can be the difference in close games and the reason we are five games ahead of the small bears.
Also, that all important run differential must be looking better for us after yesterday’s blowout in game 1.
July 14, 2024 at 1:48 pm #260356That’s my boy. Nice hit Pedro.
Lots of hard contact off Tailion thus far.
July 14, 2024 at 2:00 pm #260359After 3 lucky hits, Pages nails the runner trying to steal 2nd to end the inning.
First Crow-Armstrong literally hit a golf shot over the wall. Then we saw a broken bat double on a pitch 8 inches inside that just found some outfield grass. Finally Suzuki hit a squibber to the right side with Gorman playing way to the pull side that just eluded Gorman.
July 14, 2024 at 2:01 pm #260360Yeah, that was a big 2 out base hit after having runners at the corners with 0 outs.

July 14, 2024 at 2:41 pm #260374Burlyman with another HR!

jj-cf-stlParticipantBurly with a dbl and a tater. Lets hope the lineup can win one they shouldn’t.

Yes the vets are not pitching nearly as well which is honestly what was expected going into the season. I would very much be looking into Fedde, Kikuchi, and Bassit
July 14, 2024 at 2:54 pm #260378I missed a bunch of Cubs offense while I was outside working. The pitch location on all 4 Cubs homers looks decent. It’s not like Mikolas threw any over the heart of the plate. Also, had Siani been in center, the Cubs may have one less homer and one less double. The homer would have been difficult to snag but it only landed 6-8 inches over the CF wall.
July 14, 2024 at 3:09 pm #260379Regardless of pitch location, I’m reasonably sure that any pitcher that’s pummeled to the tune of 4 HR’s in a bit more than 5 innings of work would wish that he had all 4 of those pitches to do over again.
July 14, 2024 at 3:10 pm #260380The Cubs jumped the gun on the HR derby…That’s 5 and counting.
July 14, 2024 at 3:11 pm #260381THe guy with two last names can’t hit a decent fastball but they keep throwing him that low inside breaking pitch which he murders. Golf swing.
July 14, 2024 at 3:12 pm #260382Now those 2 from Kittredge were middle middle. Poor location.
July 14, 2024 at 3:17 pm #260383Kitty, off with his head.
July 14, 2024 at 3:36 pm #260384Wow. Strike 2 and strike 3 to Gorman both off the plate and one to each side.
