It could be quite a transformation. Burleson might be hitting his way into the 1B job. And it wouldn’t surprise me if Saggese enters the picture at either 2B or 3B. Depending on where they prefer Gorman to play, defensively. Winn, Burleson, Gorman and Saggese would be an exciting, young potential infield. offensively. By the way, it looks like Saggese might be coming into it, offensively. The 22 year-old had a brilliant game last evening. 4 for 5 hitting, including a walkoff 3 run home run. Sure hope he can build on that.

Even after a couple of good games, Saggese has a 72 wRC+ at AAA. That’s 28% worse than the average hitter at that level.

How about we wait until he becomes at least an average hitter at AAA before we start talking about him as a starting MLB 2B/3B?

Judging a player based upon one random game is like judging a marathon runner based upon one random 100 yard stretch!

Of course, we all love the potential Saggese has flashed, but he’s a long, long way from starting for the 2025 Cardinals.

Probably prudent to see how this season plays out before constructing 2025 lineups.

It’s almost a given that Goldschmidt will be gone.

The big question in my mind is whether or not Arenado will be gone. I doubt he goes anywhere because no team is going to want to pay him $30M a year for what he produces.

Mr Shady I sure do not wish to see you banned, so I thought I’d take a moment to respectfully remind you that this is your third “lineup” thread created in the past 25-30 days (going back to June 10th). This is a clear violation of posting rules and I think you’ve been warned before.

I think I speak for nearly everyone when I say we’d hate to see you suspended or even banned for this behavior.

Again, just a friendly reminder…please have a great day!

AlbertdeM, we can handle the moderating ourselves. Your “help” is neither amusing nor helpful.

I REPEAT. If folks do not agree with Shady’s repetitive posts (or those of anyone else), DO NOT REPLY to them. Just move on and zip it. It is so simple, yet so difficult for some to grasp.

If Saggese can carry a .300ish BA we will have a trifecta. Saggese, Firmin and Dunn.

As I indicated, Saggese needs to build on his recent success at AAA. But he sure seems to be trending upward. Better than downward. Wouldn’t you agree?

No. One game is not a trend.

AdM, so was Saggese just fortunate the ball hit his bat so frequently in one game. Was he just lucky? lol I see really good potential in Saggese. Not sure if I’m ready to promote his potential, yet, like I did Burleson’s. By the way, you seem to be warming up to Burly a little. You use to be brutal towards him and me for supporting him. Glad you seem to have decided to take on a more friendly-type attitude. This is just baseball talk, anyway.

    1. One game is one game. It’s essentially meaningless. Did last night’s game make me forget Gorman’s terrible June? Of course not.

    2. I’ve always liked Burleson’s hitting potential. But I’m also a realist. He does not run well. He’s a liability in the outfield. He has a poor OBP. He hits too many singles vs extra base hits.

Burleson is fine as a DH. Not great, but he can contribute. I don’t like him in the outfield (ever) and only occasionally at first base.

As far as you’re concerned, you’ve compared him to Tony Gwynn and Joey Votto. Both comps are preposterous.

At the rate he’s going, he will have to hit .300ish because he swings at almost everything (39.6% chase rate) and refuses to take a walk (5% BB%), resulting in a subpar OBP (.294).

What’s odd is he had a great BB% in AA, but it cratered with his move to AAA last year.

Regarding the infield, we have Arenado and he isn’t going anywhere. I could see Goldschmidt re-signing too and filling the 1B/DH role that Carpenter is in now.

PadsFS, “I could see Goldschmidt re-signing too and filling the 1B/DH role that Carpenter is in now”. Wouldn’t Goldy be required to take a HUGE paycut to re-sign with Cardinals in that capacity? I feel Goldy’s return depends on Walker. Can Walker prove he’s ready to take RF? So Burly can move to 1B.

He will be taking a pay cut no matter who he signs with unless he has an MVP type second half.

AdM, we finally agree on something. lol Also, if you check the stats, Burly has developed into more than just a “singles” hitter. You still seem inclined to try to undermine Burleson. So be it.

AdM. wouldn’t you agree that Burleson has picked up the slack for the underachieving Goldschmidt, Arenado and Gorman so far this season? Think of where the Cardinals offense would be this season if Burleson’s bat wouldn’t have produced like it has. By the way, what’s your starting infield projection for next season? Why don’t you like Burly, defensively, at 1B?

In my view Burleson’s restitched his mitt this season and hasn’t been at all too bad defensively. I’m impressed at how well he makes use of his limited mobility for a guy of his physical stature. I think he could man up at 1B and do relatively well.

The only transformation for the 2025 IF will be at 1B.

    1B- Burly
    2B- Gorman/Donnie/Edman
    SS- Winn
    3B- Arenado

gscottar, that could be the case. Arenado’s salary will be hard to move.

1td, that’s funny. Arenado has a pretty good gig going financially, no doubt. Actually, so does Goldschmidt. This season, Arenado’s age/performance/salary is more perplexing.

I can’t find the exact numbers, but you can only extend Goldy for a certain % pay cut . If you want him any cheaper, you have to let him go to free agency first. I found it. You can’t reduce his salary by more than 20%. So if he’s making 25mil, you have to extend him at 20. That’s about 2x too much to pay him. So if you want him for 10 it has to be a fa contract.

Mr Shady…I’m not picking at Burleson, just looking at him objectively. You tend to ignore his flaws.

He doesn’t run well at all.
He’s mediocre at first. He’s horrible in RF.
His season looks good as a Cardinal, but come on. .313 OBP is poor to mediocre. His 24 XBHs is mediocre. Over 50 of his hits have been singles.

Nolan Gorman , everyone’s fav whipping boy, has 1 more XBH than Burly even though he has 23 fewer hits! What does that tell you?

I’m not hating on the guy, but a 1.3 WAR over halfway through the season is poor to mediocre.

No doubt, my standards appear to be higher than yours.
