Free Nick Dunn. Fermin isn’t getting it done. Time to try the latest hot hand in Memphis (over 1.000 ops since the end of April)
Kloffstein has also been good the last 2 months.
If Granillo can keep it up he may be the next pitcher up!
I agree Nick Dunn is on a tear, but I don’t blame Fermin for not producing when he has 30 AB in 5 weeks on the MLB roster.
As we have seen with many of our young players, the more they play, the higher their averages are.
I see where Dunn is hitting .341. And only struck out 11 times in 123 ABs.
Add my name to the list that would like to see him called up.
No place for Dunn to play. Fermin has also earned this chance to be with the big club.
Nothing new about a player getting called up and having a hard time showing what got him called up. It just takes time and reps. Burleson seems to fit that mold. If they can ever find enough AB’s for Luken Baker at the major league level, he might get close to hitting like he has been at AAA.It’s great to see that Player of the Week honor earned by Davis. I knew his batting line was improving, but I didn’t realize it was by that much. Somme of us were beginning to think he was going to be a bust. Hooray for Chase Davis.
Yeah, Burleson’s a good example of a player who was on the cusp of looking like he wasn’t going to make it and then finally broke through and got his career underway.
It is really hard for players to demonstrate they can play at the major league level when they get less than 5 AB’s per week.
This is one thing I don’t like about the DH. We used to develop players by at least having them take one PH per day, and then you add in some playing time due to double-switches.
Now, they just rot on the bench unless there is an injury. And people wonder why they can’t OPS .750 right away.
That’s another of the countless reasons that the only contribution that the DH makes to baseball is to add an element that could be termed mundane.
In support of points already made, when Fermin was with Memphis, he hit better than Dunn has in all four slash stats.
If being hot would translate, great, but there is no assurance of that. Otherwise, when Fermin was called up the first time, he would have kept hitting like he did in Triple-A when he was our April Player of the Month. The Memphis slump you mention occurred after the first time he was sent down.
It isn’t like Dunn would be inserted into the lineup anyway. The Cards likely hope that Saggese or Prieto will get that 40-man spot down the line instead, making both Fermin and Dunn expendable. With Gorman, Donovan and Edman, how many more 2B do they need?
Dunn is a left handed hitter which I think plays a big part in it. We already have a lefty heavy lineup and bench, and we don’t need another. Unless Crawford or Carp get hurt or released, I don’t see Dunn on the team. Dunn also has never played SS so I doubt they even consider dropping Crawford to promote Dunn who is an unproven player.
I’m not sure they would ever drop a respected veteran like Crawford once signed. They might IL him for something, but I don’t think they’d cut him. JMO. When Edman comes back, Fermin is the odd man out.
Yeah. Dunn may be hot right now, but when he sits on the bench for two weeks and has two AB’s, he will inevitably cool off.
My point is Fermin is just continuing what he was doing in Memphis before he got called up
I wonder the last time a player in a 4/33 slump got called up? Only 1 xbase hit also (a double)When you are called up to sit on the bench, it doesn’t matter. Like I said, Fermin was on fire (more than Dunn now) when called up earlier this season and it didn’t matter, either. Bottom line, calling for Dunn makes little sense to me for multiple reasons. I get that not everyone agrees.
I am eager to be convinced. So, tell us how you would use Dunn when you call him up. Please get beyond the throwaway one-liners and be specific.
I would rather have Dunn on the MLB club than Carpenter, but it ain’t gonna happen.
Speaking of guys on the farm, at least for now the excitement about Victor Scott has certainly faded. He is not doing much in Memphis. And Jordan Walker is doing okay, but not exactly setting the world on fire.
I applaud the forum for trying to find offensive answers. Lord knows we need some. But I don’t believe that Dunn is going to help. Dunn is a relatively poor fielder – almost certainly no better than average. He plays 2 positions that we are stacked at. He has virtually no power. He’s not fast. His only redeeming quality is he’s great at not striking out because he’s good at fouling pitches off and pretty good at finding holes in the defense for guiding a single through against AAA pitching. I’m not suggesting he’s better or worse than Fermin. There are quite a few similarities. But either way, his skill set doesn’t really help the club right now and he’d just cost us a roster spot. Plus, with reinforcements coming back soon, now just isn’t the time.
Amazes me that we have a flawed flawed bad hitting roster but cannot find a spot for any young talent.

I would send Gorman to Memphis to join Walker working on hitting ML pitching. A guy hitting .205 isn’t doing us any good despite the homer a week.
Why so Dunn could come up and provide a weak BA with no power? I see no way Dunn provides more value than Gorman over a period of a couple of months. Gorman is a streaky player and probably always will be, but when he is on, he is really on.
AAA numbers are very bloated overall on the offensive side. Many players that are older for the level are “tearing it up”. But hitting in AAA does not translate to hitting in the bigs. MLB pitchers are much better and will exploit weak contact hitters.
The truth is that – no matter how we rearrange the pieces – this is about a .500 team.
The pitching is better than last year. We didn’t have a starter as good as Gray or Gibson and the bullpen is way better. It’s the implosion / injury of 6-7 everyday lineup guys at the plate that has killed this season.
