Cardinals Minor League Notebook – June 10, 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-3 on Sunday, while scoring just six total runs. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Memphis RH Michael McGreevy, tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Other standouts include Ian Bedell, Bryan Torres, Tre Richardson and Jason Savacool.

Memphis 2 at Omaha 0

The Memphis Redbirds (33-30) shut out the Omaha Storm Chasers (42-19, KCR) 2-0 on Sunday at Werner Park.  Starter Michael McGreevy earned his third win this season, throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings, and yielding three hits while striking out six.

The Redbirds scored first in the second with Alfonso Rivas III’s RBI groundout that plated César Prieto. Memphis added an insurance run in the third when Luken Baker grounded into a double play that scored Victor Scott II.

Matt Koperniak went 2-for-4.  Rivas III was 1-for-3, a double, with an RBI and a walk.  Prieto went 1-for-3 with a run scored.  The Redbirds totaled two runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Ryan Loutos and Kolten Ingram each threw two hitless, scoreless innings, with two strikeouts each.  Ingram earned his second save this season.  Memphis allowed no runs on three hits while walking none and striking out 10.

The Redbirds won three straight to end their series with Omaha, splitting the series at the home of the first-place team in the International League West.  They are 10 games behind the Storm Chasers in the division standings. The Redbirds will continue their road trip at the Norfolk Tides (32-31, BAL) on Tuesday.

Springfield 1 at Arkansas 2

The Springfield Cardinals (33-24) could not score again after tying it up late against the Arkansas Travelers (32-24, SEA), losing 2-1 on Sunday at Dickey-Stephens Park.  Starter Ian Bedell threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run while striking out 11.

The Travelers struck first with a solo shot to right-center to lead off the fourth inning.

The Cardinals tied it in the eighth when Bryan Torres’ RBI single to center plated Noah Mendlinger.

Arkansas walked it off in the ninth with a sacrifice fly against Matt Svanson.

Ryan Shreve threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out two.  Svanson took his third loss this season, pitching 1 2/3 innings, yielding one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one.  Springfield gave up two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out 14.

Torres went 2-for-4 with an RBI.  R.J. Yeager was 2-for-4.  Mendlinger was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  The Cardinals totaled one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Springfield split its road series with the Arkansas Travelers. In doing so, the Cardinals held a narrow half-game divisional lead over Arkansas. On Tuesday, the Cardinals begin a six-game homestand against the NW Arkansas Naturals (25-32, KCR).

Peoria 2 at Fort Wayne 9

The Peoria Chiefs (20-37) were crushed by the Fort Wayne Tin Caps (25-32, SDP) 9-2 on Sunday at Parkview Field.  Starter Brycen Mautz took his seventh loss this season, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three.

The Tin Caps struck first in the fourth and put the game out of reach early with an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk that ended Mautz’s day on the mound.  Tyler Bradt replaced Mautz and gave up a two-RBI single, a wild pitch that brought home a run, a fielding error that allowed another run to score, and an RBI single.

The Chiefs responded in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast to right-center from Tre Richardson, his first at High-A.

Cade Winquest replaced Bradt in the bottom of the fifth and gave up an RBI single.

Fort Wayne added a final insurance run in the eighth against reliever Tanner Jacobson with a sacrifice fly.

Bradt threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed two runs, none earned, on two hits while striking out one.  Winquest threw two innings, yielding one run on one hit while walking one and striking out three.   Jacobson gave up one run on one hit while walking two and striking out one in the inning he pitched.  Peoria allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits while walking and striking out eight.

Richardson went 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, and a run scored.  Chris Rotondo was the only other batter who recorded a hit for the Chiefs.  The Chiefs totaled two runs on two hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

The Chiefs won four of the six games in their road trip at the Fort Wayne Tin Caps.  Peoria remains in last place in the Midwest League West, 16 games behind Wisconsin. On Tuesday, the Chiefs will begin a homestand against the South Bend Cubs (26-31, CHI).

Palm Beach 1, Dunedin 8

The Palm Beach Cardinals were destroyed by the Dunedin Blue Jays 8-1 on Sunday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.  Starter Jason Savacool took his third loss this season, pitching 5 2/3 innings, and allowing three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Cardinals scored first in the fifth when Ross Friedrick’s sacrifice fly brought home Chase Adkison.

The Blue Jays responded in the sixth with an RBI double and a two-run homer to right field.

Hunter Kublick replaced Savacool after the home run and in the eighth, Kublick allowed an RBI groundout, a run from a fielding error by first baseman Friedrick, an RBI single, and a two-RBI single.

Kublick allowed five runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out one in the 2 1/3 innings he pitched.  Luis Gastelum threw a scoreless inning, yielding two hits while striking out two.  Palm Beach gave up eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits while walking three and striking out seven.

Adkison was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  Johnfrank Salazar was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Lizandro Espinoza went 1-for-3, a double.  The Cardinals totaled one run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts, hitting 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranding six men on base.

Palm Beach dropped four of the six games in their homestand against the Dunedin Blue Jays but still hold a one-game division lead over Jupiter (MIA). The Cardinals will start a road trip on Tuesday at the Daytona Tortugas (27-30, CIN).

FCL Cardinals – off Sunday

The Florida Complex League Cardinals (12-15) are off Sundays.  They are tied for last place, six games out. The Cardinals will continue playing on Monday against the first place FCL Marlins (16-7, MIA).

Monday’s game: vs. FCL Marlins, TBA vs. TBA 11:00 CT.

DSL Cardinals – off Sunday

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals (2-1) are off Sundays.  After a first week of the season that included two rainouts, the Cardinals will continue playing on Monday at the DSL Nationals (2-2, WAS).

Monday’s game: at DSL Nationals, TBA vs. TBA 10:00 CT.
