Peoria Chiefs left-handed starter Quinn Mathews is the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 27-June 2.
On Thursday, May 30 at Lansing, Mathews scattered just two hits with no walks over six scoreless innings Thursday, but after he left the game, the Chiefs’ pen yielded three runs as they lost, 3-2.
Mathews worked around a single and stolen base in the second inning but from there, he retired 11 consecutive Lansing hitters. In the sixth, a Lansing hit by pitch and a double put runners at second and third with two outs. Mathews ended the threat and his night by inducing a pop out to the second baseman.
Mathews fanned six and threw 59 strikes among his 85 pitches for the evening.
This is the 23-year-old from Stanford’s third weekly award win in barely two months as he previously was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week twice in April while with Palm Beach.
Through his first nine professional starts, Mathews is 3-2 with a 1.99 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and ranks third in Minor League Baseball with 76 strikeouts across his 49 2/3 innings pitched.
