Happy holiday, all. And apologies if these numbers have been referenced within another thread — but in case they haven’t been, I thought Mr. Winn deserved some kudos for his recent hitting performance.
Masyn Blaze Winn, since May 10th:
17-44 with just 3 strikeouts (3 walks), 5 doubles, and a pair of home runs.
That’s a slashline of .386/.417/.636 for the 22-year-old.For context, during his final two months in AAA last year, Masyn mashed .349/.412/.657 while fanning just 14% of the time (187 plate appearances). So it’s possible there’s a lot more going on right now than just a garden variety hot streak.
And here’s the cherry on top. Since the last time Winn struck out (May 15), he’s hit .423 and slugged .808 in 28 trips to the plate. Contact + Power = best possible hitting profile going forward.
Now of course I’ve probably jinxed the poor kid and he’ll wear the Golden Sombrero today.
And his hits have been falling in all over the field. I’ve been impressed with how his hitting approach has been in accordance with the type and location of the pitch. He’s really been waiting on the baseball and allowing it to travel deep into the zone and then ripping it to all areas of the field. In any case, the whiz-kid has noticed and has him slotted way up in the order at lead-off for today’s game.
Does Winn sort of remind you a little of Edgar Renteria at the plate?
And perhaps remind you a little of Pugs in the field?
Now that you mention it, he has been hitting a little like Renteria. And he’s only about 2200 hits away from being a lot like Renteria.

Let’s hope not, Rat. These days when I’m in a field, I usually scope out a tree on it’s fringes and then scoot on over and take a quick little pee-pee. I do it in front of a few squawking crows and maybe a cow or two and not 40,000 Masyn adoring spectators.
Winn has baseball intelligence way beyond his years. Add that to elite reflexes and speed. By far the most valuable player in the entire organization. I’m not sure I would lead him off right now, but that’s ENTIRELY because he is so comfortable right now. He belongs in that spot and never look back whenever they’re ready. But I will scream if they flip him around. I thought the turning point in the current resurgence the team is experiencing (hope it continues) came the day after LL was quoted as saying they just needed to loosen up. I think we were playing Philly and Winn was fooled so badly on a breaking pitch he burst out laughing. He looked in the dugout and the manager and the rest of the team were laughing as well. It’s like they just completely flipped the switch and started playing well. Winning is good medicine. Rats-Winn is just at such a different place in his career than Edgar was when he was here. If Winn matches Renteria we are in real good shape. I see more defensive potential in Winn. Mind you-Im super high on this guy. I went to Springfield multiple times just to see him. Marvelous player.

Maybe Mo and Co will take the Alex Anthopoulos with the Braves approach and go ahead and work out a contract extension to keep Winn in town for a few years after he would hit FA.
Our own Cooper Hjerpe came to mind when I was watching Lodolo pitch. Lefthanded, similar arm slot…haven’t seen enough of Hjerpe to make a broader comparison.

We continue to see him in both of those very different roles. It sort of reminds me of how Liberatore’s chain is repeatedly jerked between starting and relieving. Is the psychology associated with predictable constancy lost?
The Cardinals have done much worse than they are doing with Winn, like benching Bader in the middle of a hot streak…
But on a team struggling for offense, the Cardinals should be batting Winn #2.
I am not so convinced as of yet. It would be equally justifiable to say Burleson should bat 2nd. Both accomplished AAA hitters who have been hot here in the first third of the season. Winn for a few weeks longer than Burleson, if one is inclined to give that substantial weight.
I agree that they should bat up in the order due to having the hot bats and there being a paucity of alternatives at the moment. But exptrapolating greatness from a several weeks hot streak from a young player is hazardous, as we all know.

Winn has been pretty consistent all season long. Donovan has not performed. Nootbaar is injured.
Burleson struggled initially, then went on a hot streak and now is 0-for-his-last-12. I would not bat him #1 or #2, because he clogs the bases. He can bat #3 or #5.
Burleson should never bat before 5th. Winn should leadoff when ready. That’s the question, when is he ready? But if they decide that he is ready, he needs to be left there.
Winn currently leads the team with a .356 OBP.
The job of your first two hitters is to get on base. It seems logical that the guy leading the team in OBP would be batting #1 or #2.
OK LA bat him leadoff. But don’t jerk him back and forth between 8th and leadoff depending on the handness of the pitcher.

I have never said I would.
All I’ve said is that they’ve jerked other players around a lot more severely.
But assuming your high OBP guys can run the bases, I am always in favor of putting the highest OBP guys #1 & #2.
Winn is our best hit and run guy, when he’s batting. He can go to RF on demand. Do we want that at leadoff?
I have always preferred a lefty bat second for pull contact, while 1B is holding the runner on. Winn batting second can hit behind runners just as well.
If Donny bats second w/a runner on first, hitting behind runners limits his oppo skills. At leadoff, he gets more full field PA’s, especially with an auto-out batting ninth.
We are on the same page LA. JJ I’m old school and still think the leadoff man should be able to run.
With these two players I mentioned, I like hit and run attempts, over SB attempts, if my #2 has an old school RF approach like Winn.
If noot ever shows consistent health I like winn/noot 1/2 and Donovan ninth. So really you have your wish every inning but the first.
