Saggese at 3B tonite for Memphis. Looking into the future. Could the Cardinals be a little concerned about Arenado’s slow start?

    He is hitting.222 in AAA
Nolan Arenado is hitting.260 in the Major Leagues.

    Doubt a replacement is forthcoming.

It seems like Saggese is getting reps on the left side to see how he looks in a UT role.

blingboy, it is interesting what they are doing with Saggese. Obviously, his most solid defensive position is at 2B. But the Cardinals have Gorman, Donovan and Edman, likely, ahead of him there. You might be on to something with that UT possibility.

Outside of Wilking Rodriguez and Josh James (who have both been complete dumpster fires), our minor league pitching has been far improved this season. We’ve definitely injected pitching and that’s pushed some pitchers down a level. The offense is now somewhat of an issue in the Minors after so many graduations in the past 2 seasons – some too early. But it should be enough to win games when combined with good pitching.

For example, our minor league pitchers have allowed 2 hits and 0 runs in 11 innings so far tonight (note the aforementioned Rodriguez and James have not pitched yet).

Ok. So Memphis has given up 15 runs tonight. 8 charged to Victor Santos and 5 earned runs charged to Josh James (in 1/3 innings) who has an ERA well over 50. So much for that signing.

But our other 3 teams performed well giving up 4 earned runs on 12 hits over 26 innings (Springfield still has an inning to go).

I hadn’t even heard of Santos until last week, it seems his tenure might be a short one.

Rajcic and Paniagua put up great lines tonight! Surprised he’s still in A+ actually.

Cho with his 4th SB tonight as well.

Saggese 0/3 yesterday hitting .200 ytd. I appreciate prospects for what they are. Hope they develop for the Cards.

Don’t find it useful to slobber and fixate over guys before they’re ready. Let them work through the system.

I have not had any success trying to find out details of Santos’s “elbow injury” that caused him to miss all last season. Being a minor leaguer, injury info is scant. I did not find any report of a surgery. At the time we acquired him, he had been able to make a few appearences in the Dominican winter league, and he made a few more after the trade. Then he pitched in camp this spring. Given that he is in our AAA rotation (at least for now), it would be good to have some idea about the injury, any surgery that happened or didn’t, and just how healthy he might be or not be now.

Talking about prospects is encouraged here, however the ensuing discussion is far better when there is some substance behind it.

Any suggestion that Arenado’s job is in jeopardy is far-fetched to put it politely. Mentioning Saggese in conjunction is doubling down.

As noted, Saggese is getting reps at multiple positions to make him more appealing as a utility infield option down the road. This will be an important year for him to show he can hit at Triple-A and perhaps become a future option at shortstop.

Saggese will eventually be a regular. Whether it be 3B, 2B, LF or 1B. I’d be surprised if he ends up a back up to Winn at SS. Maybe, utility temporarily. But not long range. Arenado’s job isn’t in jeopardy this season, but it wouldn’t be prudent to invest the kind of money they are in him with subpar production after this season. I’m simply anticipating a possible future scenario. I reiterate, current stats don’t necessarily concern me with talented young players. They are working on some things to improve their game in the long run.

“Oh My” Darlin Manuel Saladin. I’ve had my eye on this crafty little righty out of the Dominican for a few years now. Shortly after he first came up, I had him pegged for High A ball by 2024 and then AA in 2025. He’s right on schedule, so you fans up in Peoria will be seeing Darlin this summer.

I was happy to see the West Point grad made the highlight reel.

How a glance at a box score made me understand how Nostradamus felt.

I noticed that Springfield’s pitchers got smacked around some Thursday even though they won. Almong the unimpressive but not horrible outings was Svanson. Naturally, Svanson’s name cause me to wonder how Paulie DeJong was doing for the Chisox.

The answer to that is he’s doing just as we know he would. In 10 games, 25 PAs, 13 Ks, 0 BBs, .200 BA, .200 OBP, 2 HRs. So, a homer a week and nothing much but strike outs in between. Just as we saw for a couple years here.

That got me thinking to check the DeJong offense clone Tyler O’Neill, who got off to a blazing start and had the feeble minded all lathered up and googly eyed. The last couple games, 0 HR, 3 Ks. Small samples don’t mean anything, but it should remind us the homers will dry up in between spurts but the Ks will be relentless. It’s eerie knowing that I can see that slice of the future before it happens.
