It all depends on Turnbull. A 2021 world beater who threw a no-no and then went on the IL and had TJ. He tried and failed to come back from the surgery all last year and got cut loose at the end of the year. The Phillies hired him for $2M, he made the team, and he’s looked like a world beater again so far. If he’s on again we could run into a buzz saw.
As an aside, when Turnbull first went on the IL it was said to be a forearm strain, or forearm flexor tendon strain. It didn’t resolve and was revealed to actually be an elbow issue when he underwent the TJ. That is very common with “forearm” injuries, actually turning out to be an elbow problem. That is how it went with Donovan, and it is why we should be concerned about Middleton and O’Brien.

I saw where Middleton has now had a platelet rich plasma injection in his pitching elbow. This has become a popular non surgical attempt to treat a UCL injury without surgery. I haven’t seen anything in the literature out there describing that treatment to the elbow for any other condition besides a UCL injury. Obviously we don’t know in Middleton’s case, but it does appear to be an elbow injury and it seems likely to involve the UCL.
Considering our early schedule and plethora of injuries I kind of like where the Cardinals are right now at 5-5. We are about to start getting some of these IL players back and some of the other NLC teams won’t be able to sustain this pace.
It would help a lot if Arenado and Goldy would start hitting like heart of the order bats. Combined they have one HR and two doubles in 86 PA’s. Donovan has 1 HR and 4 doubles in 40 PA’s. C’mon big money, earn it.

The Good:
Contreras – 167 WRC+, .3 FWAR
Donovan – 175 WRC+, .3 FWAR
Winn – 93 WRC+, .2 FWAR
Gorman – 106 WRC+, .2 FWARI included Gorman in the good because he’s playing good defense which helps prop up that FWAR. Herrera could also be added here but he doesn’t have that many at bats yet so I kept him out. Donovan has been amazing with the bat but a little subpar with the glove. Contreras has been pretty good all around.
The Bad:
Walker – 59 WRC+, 0 FWAR
Goldschmidt – 80 WRC+, 0 FWAR
Arenado – 66 WRC+, 0 FWAR
Burleson – 16 WRC+, -.2 FWARI could also include Scott here with his negative WRC+, but it seems unfair to include a guy who should be in AAA but got promoted through extreme need and no fault of his own. But yeah, as a hitter he’s been at pitcher level. Basically an automatic out. The big 3 are really struggling and pulling down the offense.
Getting Nootbaar back should improve the LF defense some. It also pushes Burleson’s bat out of the lineup. Donovan then either is the DH or he plays 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, or RF while that position player is the DH. So effectively, we’re getting Nootbaar’s bat to replace Burleson’s bat. Someone will need to sit on the days Herrera catches, but it’s fine to be able to fully rest one of the guys for that 40% of games.
We need an offense strategy other than putting complementary pieces around Goldschmidt and Arenado. We are just going to languish until BillMo pulls the plug on it.

I’m mostly fine with getting Noot’s timing back first. Without it, he’s probably not much of an upgrade to Burleson and his defensive upgrade over Donovan in LF isn’t really worth the rush.

Sounds great! Substitute Arnold Palmer half and half for the milk. The raw onions gonna tear me up later but I’m willing to pay the consequences!
Spaghetti made with Italian sausage, a big tossed salad and garlic bread here. Will keep it to water to drink, although red wine would be more appropriate.
Fifty years ago today “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron ripped HR # 715 to surpass George Herman Ruth for the all time Big League HR record. I still have a ’73 edition Baseball Encyclopedia that has Aaron’s page with his HR total still 1 tater short of the record at 713. Other than the back of a player’s card, it was the only way to look a guy up back then…Haha!
