The Cardinals have no finalists for the various Players Choice Awards. Winners will be announced November 2.

October 17, 2023 at 2:28 pm #235851The official results of AL and NL MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, etc. will occur in November about 10 days after the World Series ends. I haven’t seen a detailed schedule yet.
Of course, “finalists” lists will be released earlier, intended to build up anticipation.
October 17, 2023 at 2:50 pm #235856I assume Arenado will not be the gold glove winner at 3rdbase this year?
October 17, 2023 at 3:03 pm #235859It all depends on the voters, rats. However, in the saber element, the SABR Defensive Index, last updated on 8/13, Arenado was a distant seventh among NL third basemen.
Ryan McMahon 10.4
Ke’Bryan Hayes 10.3
…
Arenado 1.0The SDI is 25% of the GG scoring.
October 17, 2023 at 4:33 pm #235861FMI, do the NL and AL “batting champions” still get a silver bat or did that go the way of the Louisville Slugger?
October 17, 2023 at 6:22 pm #235864Defensively McMahon has made Rockies’ fans almost forget Arenado. He is really good.
October 18, 2023 at 5:59 am #235888For CIF. All Silver Sluggers get one. And, yes, they are still Louisville Sluggers.
October 18, 2023 at 7:43 am #235896Thanks Brian. I thought the silver bat went to the “batting champion” of each league, that is the player with the highest batting average in each league, or two a year. Now it seems they have watered it down and hand one out for each position. Kind of like baseball’s expansion. More people can now say they “won” something.
October 18, 2023 at 9:53 am #235906The Siver Bat Trophy is awarded to the batting champion of each league. The Silver Slugger awards are a different thing.
October 18, 2023 at 10:02 am #235907Yep, and silver slugger has been around for quite a while.
October 18, 2023 at 10:26 am #235909I can remember seeing Willie McGee’s Silver bat trophy on display. It might have been at WWU I think, but memory is a little foggy. (I don’t remember which one as he was NL batting champ twice).
October 18, 2023 at 10:51 am #235911The SDI is 25% of the GG scoring.
Rat is probably right. I read something in the last couple years that said, while the SDI is just 25% mathematically, its real impact is probably much larger. It said the voters see the SDI numbers included on the “ballot” info (not sure if it’s paper or electronic) and that would have some influence on how they might vote. I think that makes sense.
October 18, 2023 at 11:08 am #235912It seems likely they would want to minimize the eye test or anything remotely intangible. At some point robo voters will do it based upon whatever the technology can measure and quantify. All very sterile.
October 18, 2023 at 12:36 pm #235915Silver bat or not, I’m certain of one thing…The player with the highest BA and enough AB’s to qualify holds the title of that season’s Batting Champion in his respective league. If I’m a Big League hitter, that title’s good enough for me to do a little boasting…Haha!
October 18, 2023 at 1:37 pm #235922I wonder if we should give the guy with the highest OBP the title of Plate Appearance Champion? And would that guy boast about it? Darn sure he would during next contract negotiation, hehe.
October 18, 2023 at 1:43 pm #235923Yeah, that OBP has turned out to be the holy grail of the batter’s box these days. I still say give me the guy who hits .400 with 45 doubles along with 50 to 60 SB’s…Haha!
October 18, 2023 at 1:53 pm #235924Tommy Edman is the only Cardinal Gold Glove finalist (top three finisher), named at the utility position. Winners will be announced on November 5.
Making plays all over the field.

October 18, 2023 at 2:03 pm #235928In my humble opinion, I would rather the voters (coaches and managers) have some data to guide them rather than voting solely based on the eye test.
The textbook example of the latter is when DH Rafael Palmeiro received a Gold Glove despite hardly playing in the field all year long.
But, yes, to some, data will always be a bogeyman, to be feared.
October 18, 2023 at 2:08 pm #235929In my view he was more deserving of a GG than was Donovan in ’22. His performance with the mitt this season in both the IF and CF may help him to secure his 2nd GG. In any case, you can place Tommy Edman anywhere on the field and you’ll never see him wearing an oven mitt. Not even in the kitchen…Haha!
October 18, 2023 at 2:10 pm #235931Poster Oliver provided the full list of finalists (copied here rather than starting a new thread).

Ha-Seong Kim, SDOctober 18, 2023 at 2:14 pm #235932The season that Palmeiro was voted a GG after spending the vast majority of games at DH had nothing to do with data or lack of. That was the season in which voters cast their ballots from a coffee shop located on the Damrak in the city of Amsterdam…Bill Lee actually supervised the tallying of the ballots. Go figure.
October 18, 2023 at 2:15 pm #235934WUT? Mookie was a utility guy?…No way!
October 18, 2023 at 2:19 pm #235935How can Betts be one of the best RF’ers that I’ve seen in several years and still be a utility guy? Does he moonlight as a mantenance man at some office complex?
October 18, 2023 at 3:03 pm #235939This year Mookie played 98 games at RF, 65 at 2B, and 14 at SS. That is obviously more than 162 so I imagine there were a few games he played multiple positions.
October 18, 2023 at 3:27 pm #235942You could play him on the moon and he’d still qualify for the best RF’er in the NL. I’ll take Betts over 10 Tatis Jr’s.
