Cubs lost last night 4-3 to Milwaukee in 10 innings at Miller Park.

Miami scored late and beat Pittsburgh 4-3 at Forbes Field.

    Reds squeaked out their game.

Arizona trailing Houston 2-0 in the 7th at the BOB.

Seattle leads Texas 3-0 in the 4th at the Kingdome.

And Jasper lost to Castle 39-32. Jasper fumbled at the goal line with less than a minute to go. That was a killer.

Maybe Rom will pitch well tonight.

I almost hope he does not so that there is zero chance Mo even thinks about him as an option of any kind for next season.

Flame out does not begin to describe the end of this season. There’s really not much to hang your hat on as far as any of the late season auditions providing help next year. Winn is the exception I guess but good Lord at least hit .200 and even then you really can only carry one of those in your everyday line up.

Rom has a 7.98 ERA. It’s pretty clear he will begin next season in AAA.

I have been following Cardinal baseball since 1961 – mostly through my dad in the early years, and then pretty close myself starting around ‘66-‘67.

This is the worst Cardinal team I have experienced in that long tenure of fandom. There have been some bad teams, but those teams were not looked at as contenders from the start. This club was widely considered the NL Central favorite coming in to the season, and the nice Spring by Jordan Walker lead many to believe we might be a powerhouse.

Wow, what a revolting development this season was! We are down to the last series of the year and are still hitting new lows. The one bright spot in a season like this is that next year has to be better, doesn’t it?

The questions is: How much better can they be next year?

Could they have a winning record? Yeah, that can happen.

Can they make the playoff? Maybe, as we can see playing .500 baseball will keep you in ‘playoff’ contention through the end of the season.

Can they win the division and / or advance deep into the post season tournament as in – get to the NLCS? Highly unlikely. There is simply too much to fix and too much ground to make up for that to be a realistic goal in 2024.

2015 was the last season the Cardinals were a legitimate threat in the NL. If everything goes just right and Mo puxhes all the right buttons IMO it will be 2025 before we can say that again.

I’d say the ’23 edition was looked on as more than contenders. Everyone on the planet had them winning the NLC. The fact that they’re going to finish last in the division undoubtedly places them as not only the worst, but also the most disappointing Cardinal team I’ve ever seen in well over 50 years.

This year the team was very inept and disfunctional early and got in an insurmountable hole. It seems like they played somewhere close to .500 ball for a good part of the season after that. I think a combination of things precipitated the early problems and those things will not be present next year. So the team should tend toward being better even apart from changes to the roster. The factors that should not be present include a lot of players, including veterans, not present for much of ST, changes in key coaching pieces and replacing Yadi with a new guy from outside the organization. Some level of improvement will be due to that, but Mo will get credit for any and all improvement.

Without looking it up, I’m thinking we got to around 15 or so games under .500 on pretty much a straight downward sloping line early on. From there its been somewhat around .500 mostly, and we have gradually settled to near 20 under before this recent end of season stampede to the post office put us even further under. So I figure there will be something like around a 15 game improvement next year apart from whatever Mo does.

The Cardinals were 15-13 in May and 14-13 in July. They were a combined 25 games below the rest of the season. So May and July they seemed like a .500 team. The rest of the time they seemed like a team that earned their last place standing.

We reached 14 games under .500 after play on May 6th, standing at 10-24

The last time we were 14 under was on August 17, 54-68. So we played at .500 from May 6th until August 17th, a little over 3 months. We’ve lost ground from then until now.

So I figure if the things mentioned hadn’t happened, which they won’t this winter and spring, then we may have played at a .500 clip those first 5 weeks like we did for the subsequent 3 months. That would have put us at around .500 in mid August. If that had been the case, we wouldn’t have done the deadline selloff, and if we hadn’t waved the white flag, we may have continued playing at .500 right up until now.

    Tell me why I’m wrong?

Cardinals chase the starting pitcher in the bottom of the first without recording a hit – three straight walks to lead off.

Second pitcher quickly surrenders two doubles to make it 4-0.

After getting Palacios to ground out, Baker hits the third double of the inning, 5-0

Fermin and Winn doing what they do.

Wow, we strung together some hits and walks for 5 in the first. Now Rom has to hold it.
