RHP Miles Mikolas (7-12, 4.84) vs. LHP Wade Miley (8-4, 3.38)
BSM // MLB Network // KMOX // WIJR
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest)September 21, 2023 at 11:28 am #23429645 minutes from first pitch and no activity.
Me and Whitey Herdog are about to have our din-din of fish and COTC. Then some Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Then it will be time for a cigar and to also tune in to the broadcast.
I expect this one to be a pitchers duel. A low scoring game.

stlcard25ParticipantThis year feels like one of those runaway trains, where there’s just no momentum and no one performs because it just doesn’t matter. Hopefully the offseason treats us all better.
September 21, 2023 at 1:51 pm #234304Hope Edman is better next year. I am not sold on his 2023
September 21, 2023 at 1:57 pm #234305I’ll keep playing Edman until somebody consistently better comes along.
September 21, 2023 at 2:01 pm #234306Three out of Edman’s five years have been like this
September 21, 2023 at 2:06 pm #234307I hope Mikolas is better next year than lately.
September 21, 2023 at 2:22 pm #234309Edman is not that good.
September 21, 2023 at 2:27 pm #234311Oliver and Gamecard heading for a steel cage death match over Edman.
September 21, 2023 at 2:29 pm #234313Lol he may be gold glove whatever butbhis .688 OPS sucks
September 21, 2023 at 2:38 pm #234314Another sack of donuts for the birds, firming up our last place.
September 21, 2023 at 3:27 pm #234316Mikolas is one of the guys we are counting on for the starting rotation next year? Really?
September 21, 2023 at 3:47 pm #234319Mikolas is our ace going into next year!!!
September 21, 2023 at 3:51 pm #234320Really?
Yes really. There are 18.5 million reasons why Mikolas will be in the 2024 rotation, and not bringing up the rear of it. And another 18.5 million reasons why he will be doing the same in 2025.
My guess is the 7-13 guy, with 4.95 ERA (5.80 in second half) will probaby be our #2 starter to start off the season, and I will not be shocked if he ends up the opening day starter. And considering that BDW owes Matz $25 million over the next two years, I consider it highly likely he will be in the rotation to start the season.
September 21, 2023 at 4:07 pm #234322Man, Bling.
You almost make it sound like the Cardinals made a mistake when they panicked last spring training and signed Mikolas to an extension.
September 21, 2023 at 4:13 pm #234323Contreras to the IL. Not sure who is going on the roster.
September 21, 2023 at 4:37 pm #234325Well if they don’t want to add anyone to the 40 man right now, they should call up Gomez and see if he can hit HRs at the major-league level.
September 21, 2023 at 6:29 pm #234330Losing 3 of 4 to the division leader and getting outscored 21-6 in the process is a pretty big gap. Now we are really banged up, and seem to lose another guy about every other day.
Still there is a lot to make up if we hope to compete next year. And it’s not like Milwaukee is the class of the league either. But you have to win your division or come close to get to some day games in October.
And I agree on Mikolas. The “Burt Reynolds” style looked better. He probably figured things were not going well as a suave, cool dude so he would try the conservative look. Seems to have made him worse.
September 21, 2023 at 7:57 pm #234334I certainly wouldn’t have been shocked seeing Masyn flirting with The (Manny)Mendoza Line in his first couple of months with the big club, but now he’s starting to trend more towards The (Ron) Herbel Line, which is quite frightening. For those not familiar with The Herbel Line, it’s the not coveted distinction for those ML players whom have accrued in excess of 200 official at bats and have a batting average less than .050. For the record, pitcher Ron Herbel earned a lifetime batting average of .029.
September 21, 2023 at 8:09 pm #234335Pugs – Winn will not drift down to the Herbel Line, as he already has 16 hits in 94 ABs.
September 21, 2023 at 8:22 pm #234336Masyn is only a few points shy of hitting his weight, so the glass is half full.
September 21, 2023 at 9:14 pm #23434320 games is pretty tough to make up over a single off season. I think the 2016 Cards finished 2nd in the division 17 or so games behind the Cubs. ’17 and ’18 were better but still no playoffs those years. It took three years to right that ship.
Now, it’s 20 games back PLUS having to climb over every other team in the division.
To overcome the deficit a whole lotta things will have to fall into place: Players like Mikolas and Matz will have to have close to career years, Arenado and Goldschmidt will need to return to 2022 form, The young bats will have to figure it out and improve quite a lot, the defense needs fixing, and DeWitt will have to spend a ton of money AND Mo will have to spend it wisely hitting on almost every acquisition.
That is a whole bunch of stuff all having to go right….
