(After Monday’s day off…)
6:20 p.m.
RH Miles Mikolas (6-10, 4.66) vs. TBA
BSM // KMOX
(and Bally Sports South Extra (Kentucky)/Southwest Extra)September 3, 2023 at 4:57 pm #233107I thought Wainwright was held back from Sunday’s game with the Pirates for this game?
September 3, 2023 at 5:24 pm #233108See the Thursday thread. It was also set up this way so he doesn’t have to pitch in Cincinnati on the next turn over next weekend. His career ERA at GABP is 5.87, his worst mark at any stadium at which he threw more than twice. That includes his good years and bad. This season, it is 7.94 (one start), which is actually better than his overall 2023 ERA.
September 3, 2023 at 6:33 pm #233110I’ll bet Adam’s having some misgivings about not packing it in last season with his two old Cardinal friends. He’s not doing his career numbers any favors by hanging around this season, and although I hope I’m wrong, at this point I don’t at all think he’s going to record two more W’s. It’s a shame, but that’s my guess.
September 3, 2023 at 7:32 pm #233111I think the only way he gets those two wins is if they manufacture it for him. In games where they have a big lead around the 4th inning take the starter out and put Wainwright in for 2-3 innings. And keep your fingers crossed he doesn’t surrender the lead.
September 3, 2023 at 8:26 pm #233113Yeah, they could try that, but a lot of things would have to fall precisely into place. And they’d have to fall into place twice with just 25 games remaining. Not at all impossible, but I’d say improbable. I just hate to see him go out there and get entirely over matched time after time. It’s no fun watching an old guy get beat up. I go through that whenever I cut the grass or clean the gutters…Haha!
September 5, 2023 at 1:33 pm #233205The Cardinals are so bad this year that I am about to forego my 2022 St. Louis Strat-O-Matic Replay since I don’t want to manage the same players that are such duds this year.
Once September rolls around and the weather starts to cool off it becomes Strat-O-Matic time. I am now thinking about some type of 1976 St. Louis Replay. And yes, they were terrible that year too.
Anyway, I would like to see Arenado get to 30 homeruns on the year. He’s at 26 right now so he needs a little hot streak. Hopefully it starts tonight!

1B P. Goldschmidt R
2B Nolan Gorman L
3B N. Arenado R
C W. Contreras R
DH J. Walker R
LF T. O’Neill R
CF Tommy Edman S
SS Masyn Winn RSeptember 5, 2023 at 4:41 pm #233214I like Gorman but he needs to be hitting like 7th until he figures it out.
September 5, 2023 at 5:05 pm #233215If tonight’s game were being played at Fulton Co. Stadium and Chief Noc-A-Homa were still around he may well be required to perform so many war dances that he’d collapse from utter exhaustion…I’ve been keeping up with the offensive numbers that the Braves position players have been placing up on the board this season and they simply have a larger stockpile of weapons than the Springfield Armory. They don’t provide an opposing pitcher a breath of air from top to bottom of their line-up. In any case, I miss Chief Noc-A-Homa. He sure could dance that war dance…Haha!
September 5, 2023 at 5:11 pm #233217The remainder of the 2023 Cardinal schedule looks brutal. All against contending teams.
Braves
Reds
Orioles
Phillies
Brewers
Padres
Brewers
RedsOuch, not many victories for us it looks like.
September 5, 2023 at 5:59 pm #233218Well people, this 9 game trip could be ugly, but then it has been an ugly season. We play two of the best teams in the game, plus an up-trending Reds club that is still in the hunt for a post season berth.
Can we even go 2-7 on this trip?
September 5, 2023 at 6:02 pm #233219Oh, my batting order with tonight’s lineup would be:
Nootbaar
O’Neill
Goldschmidt
Arenado
Gorman
Contreras
Walker
Edman
WinnIf you flipped Edman and O’Neill I would be okay with that too.
September 5, 2023 at 6:10 pm #233220Hey Rats – for your Strat replay, how about playing 1972, a bad ball club, BUT reverse the Carlton/Wise trade. Have Steve as a Cardinal and Rick Wise a Phillie.
And if you really want to make the Cardinals better, keep Richie “Call me Dick” Allen a Cardinal. You would have to put Ted Sizemore back with the Dodgers and move Tommy John back to the White Sox, not too mention work out some one to play second for the Cardinals. But that might be a fun “what if?” project. Maybe keep Sizemore a Cardinal but say that Bing Devine made a good trade for Teddy and instead of sending Allen to the Dodgers have us trade someone like Joe Hague. Actually we sent Hague to the Reds during that season for Bernie Carbo, so you may need to find someone else to deal to LA.
I started a 1972 replay in Action PC with Carlton as a Cardinal, but am only in early May I think. Have not picked it up for quite awhile so am not even sure how it was going. I do recall Carlton had not hit his stride yet and was not the overly dominant pitcher he was in real life in ’72.
September 5, 2023 at 6:50 pm #233221On the radio it sounds like Edman is doing it all in CF.
September 5, 2023 at 7:14 pm #233222He is definitely saving hits/runs with some really great plays.
And to the opposite effect, Graceffo gave up 2 runs in the first at Memphis because he has Juan Yepez playing behind him in the outfield (and Gomez too but Yepez allowed a 2 run triple to go over his head and off the wall).
September 5, 2023 at 7:51 pm #233224Walker is doing a great job playing DH tonight.
September 5, 2023 at 7:55 pm #233225Braves starting to come back from a 9-1 deficit. BTB homers by Riley and Olson. Two runners on now and it’s a 9-3 game.
September 5, 2023 at 8:04 pm #233226“On the radio it sounds like Edman is doing it all in CF”.
Eddie has 2 run-saving catches in CF plus a double RBI and has scored a run.
September 5, 2023 at 8:19 pm #233227And CF is by no means his best position. Place him anywhere and he continues to be one of the best mitts out there.
September 5, 2023 at 8:20 pm #233228It’s obvious the Redbirds aren’t in contention. There isn’t much traffic on these game threads nowadays.
September 5, 2023 at 8:24 pm #2332291td…Eddie is the Cardinal’s best SS, 2B & CF’er.
September 5, 2023 at 8:25 pm #233230Is there a reason to use Gallegos in a blowout? Haven’t paid as much attention lately – has he not pitched in awhile?
September 5, 2023 at 8:29 pm #233231Man, Gallegos served that pitch on a tee to Ozuna.
Yeah, Edman is great with the glove. He could probably be put at catcher and hold his own.
Hey, wonder if he can play the ultimate defensive position well – can he pitch?
September 5, 2023 at 8:31 pm #233232Gallegos not sharp. 15 pitches and has not gotten an out.
