Just saw it on MSN Sports page. Would like to see him in the starting lineup on Friday night.
August 18, 2023 at 1:26 am #231820I want to see him start every game until the end of the season
August 18, 2023 at 4:58 am #231821Nootbaar to the IL to make room on the active roster.
August 18, 2023 at 6:30 am #231829August 18, 2023 at 12:52 pm #231841Walker’s line after the AS break: .218/.288/.356/.645
We need somebody new to hype. Lets hope Winn can turn in a good six weeks.
August 18, 2023 at 1:26 pm #231842I don’t even know what this Winn guy looks like, but after after all these months (if not years) of buildup and high expectations, especially on this forum, I hope he cheers us all up.

cardsfan64ParticipantMaybe having Winn as the focus of attention, Walker will not feel as much pressure and he will start hitting better!
August 18, 2023 at 2:16 pm #231846CiF the enthusiasm here hasn’t been any more over the top than what I’ve seen elsewhere. Its been universal. If you scan the twitterverse since the call up announcement, you come away thinking Winn can walk on water. The guy doesn’t have a chance of measuring up. Hopefully he has a solid first few weeks. One advantage he will have is when he shows up next season he probably won’t be walking into a total cluster like Walker and Contreras did this year. Hopefully, at least.
It will be a big plus if we hit opening day settled on who the middle infield is and who the outfield is. All the waffling and hand wringing by managemanet and the FO didn’t help at all this season. I understand why Mo was gun shy about cutting bait, but he needs to man up.
August 18, 2023 at 2:38 pm #231847Who does he need to cut bait on to pass your manly test? Be specific.
August 18, 2023 at 2:41 pm #231849Well, Winn IS the number one prospect in the system, so if people can’t get excited about him, who should they support? Number 10? Or no one – just be consistently negative about every young player?
August 18, 2023 at 4:35 pm #231854BB – I’d like to put Winn & Walker into perspective. They should not be good yet. They are 21. Almost no other prospect is good at that age. In fact, almost no other prospects make the MLB at 21 or younger. They are all still in the minors getting better. So far this season, there have been exactly 201 prospects who have made their MLB debut. Out of those 201, guess how many were 21 or under? . . . . If you said 8, you’d have gotten the correct answer. Just 9 players debuted this early in their careers in 2023. Three of those 9 actually got there at 20 years old. Those are Jordan Walker, Eury Perez, and AJ Smith-Shawver. Here is the mlb BWAR on each of those players:
Walker – (-1.1)
Eury Perez – 1.6
AJ Smith-Shawver – 0.0
Anthony Volpe – 2.9
Luis Matos – (-0.3)
Elly de la Cruz – 1.0
Marco Luciano – 0.2
Tyler Soderstrom – (-0.6)
Justin Martinez – (-0.3)Volpe is the only one of these players having a real good year and he was actually just barely still 21 when he debuted (turned 22 in April). Walker and Winn are both still 21. Give them time to develop.
August 18, 2023 at 4:59 pm #231855Jnevel, I agree 100%, which is why expectation needs to reflect the realities which you mention. By no means do we want to repeat the ridiculous Walker hype tornado that had folks actually expecting him to come barreling out of AA at 20 years old and take RoY. Did you know that Winn is an ‘electric’ player who is going to ‘jolt some life into the team’? Well he is. He is not the 21 year old trying to break in, facing the inevitable adjustment period with brief pro experience. One understands that the local media types want to woop it up, but really, there needs to be a sober voice of reason.
August 18, 2023 at 5:07 pm #231857Ok. I’m great with the caution the hype message and I 100% agree. Sure, Winn could have a hot streak right off the bat, but it’s far more likely he’s going to be adjusting for the next 9-12 months (or potentially longer). Sometimes it just comes across from you as the Cardinals have all bad prospects. But maybe I just mistook what you wrote.
August 18, 2023 at 6:29 pm #231861I suspect some posters bring perspective here that they see elsewhere and call it overhype. Let’s take a look at ourselves. This is a prospect-oriented site, but not usually kool-aid driven. There might have been one poster with very high expectations, but I don’t think it hasn’t been pervasive.
In fact, I recall just the opposite occurring, too. Not all that long ago, bling, you asserted that Winn could not be counted upon to be ready in 2024. Personally, I thought that was overly pessimistic, just as the other view felt too rosy.
IMO, he has clearly earned his shot now but what to expect from him initially is unknown.
August 18, 2023 at 6:46 pm #231863Should have been called up 10 games sooner tô make sure he got 130 abs and lose rookie eligibility. The consequences of losing a year of control for beng rookie of the year are too high tô risk. Especially when they can be avoided só easily.
August 18, 2023 at 6:52 pm #231864If I am remembering the same conversation, it was around the beginning of the season. Winn had just finished hitting a less than spectacular .258 in AA. Yeah, he was young, but he was going to be young in AAA too, and nobody knew if he would hit .288 or .238. A step back at that point is not unusual at all. It turned out he hit the .288, which is great, but now he is young for MLB, and a step back is again not unusual. But you would never guess it. Like I said, I hope he has a solid few weeks, and next spring steps into a better situation than Walker and Contreras did.
August 18, 2023 at 6:58 pm #231865I know this really doesn’t matter, but it really irritates me Winn is wearing 0. Maybe I’m just getting old.
August 18, 2023 at 7:29 pm #231868I don’t see the year of control as a big deal anyway. When announced it felt like a sleeves out of the vest deal.
Even if the ROY isn’t up all season, he gets a full year of service. Ok. IMO, that would only matter if he came up early in the year and was sent down for a while and then earned ROY.
In Winn’s case, he is coming up late in this year. He is likely to have more than a full year of service at the end of 2024 either way.
And as I have said other times, worrying about the low odds of him winning ROY by keeping him down when there is an ideal opportunity to get his career started now would be very short sighted.
August 18, 2023 at 7:30 pm #231869OO is for Omar Olivares.

and Bobby Bonds.

O is for Kerry Robinson.

and Austin Dean.
August 18, 2023 at 7:41 pm #231874I remember Olivares wearing 00 and carrying a 0.00 ERA into the season a few starts. I remember Robinson wearing 0, I guess I don’t remember Dean wearing 0.
August 18, 2023 at 9:42 pm #231878The 00 that I remember goes like this:
“THE CENTER IS FROM CENTENARY, 7 FEET 1/2 INCH, NUMBER 00, ROBBBBERRRRTTT PARISH!”
Those were the days….
August 19, 2023 at 7:50 am #231894I think the pro sports player whom got the ball initially rolling with the 00 jersey number, had to have been Jim Otto of the Oakland Raiders. Kind of ironic as it was just yesterday that I drove through Otto’s hometown(Wausau). I think Jimbo is still alive and kicking…… I’ll have to look that up.
August 19, 2023 at 9:53 am #231905I hope this kid has a great career. We haven’t had a great shortstop in a very long time. I believe he has that ability and will be pulling hard for him to be what he can be.
August 19, 2023 at 10:32 am #231907For those who don’t follow prospects as closely as they should, does Winn play any other position than ss?

I think he played some 2B at Memphis.
