1:15 p.m.
RHP Miles Mikolas (6-7, 4.29) vs. LHP Austin Gomber (8-8, 5.68)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest)Update: Mikolas is delayed until Monday because Sunday is the fifth and final game of his suspension. This will be a bullpen game instead.
August 5, 2023 at 9:55 pm #230756Pallante went two innings last night and Gallegos went one. With the off day on Monday the bullpen game isn’t all that alarming.
My Sunday din din will be a couple of hamburgers on the grill along with some Grippo’s bar-b-q potato chips, some Prairie Farms Vanilla Bean ice cream, and a couple of 7×50 Palma Real cigars while me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch. We will first start with the Washington/Cincinnati game and then switch over to Chip and Jim at 2:15 est.

August 6, 2023 at 8:41 am #230774Dumbest 5 game suspension in the history of major league baseball.
Mikolas shouldn’t have even been tossed for that little love tap.
The strike box is showing the world just how wildly inconsistent umpires are and likely have been.
There should be a system in place where they are perp walked off the field and replaced mid game for X number of missed calls.
August 6, 2023 at 9:19 am #230775MLB is doing its utmost to sterilze the game and make it as emotionless as running a sim game on one’s computer. Interactions over strike zone calls are just about all that is left, and it will soon be as sterile as rest of the game. 5 games for a beachball in the rump to remind a careless batter that game action is no place for batting cage antics which draw blood? They will have to bow and curtsy to one another before long.
August 6, 2023 at 9:46 am #230779Ironically I was reading a mini-bio on Don Drysdale yesterday. A big part of Big D’s pitching persona was throwing inside and not being adverse to hitting batters.
Frank Robinson got hit so many times by Drysdale that he said something to the effect of “I would get worn out facing him – every game against him just mentally drained me.”
Mickey Mantle said that in pregame Drysdale told him “Where do you want it today big guy?”
Obviously you don’t want batters to be hurt and a constant war of beanballs back and forth. But a little gamesmanship should be allowed.
August 6, 2023 at 10:43 am #230781Perhaps we should occasionally signal the catcher to duck and plunk a couple of the worst home plate umpires.

ParticipantHow many games has Gomber won in a row now. He struggled at the start of the season but is back to .500.
August 6, 2023 at 11:12 am #230783Bikemike…One of my first memories of Drysdale occured during the ’68 season when Gibson was chasing Drysdale’s then record of scoreless innings streak. Gibson was going for his 6th consecutive shutout against the Dodgers in LA and the SP’er for the Dodgers on that night just happened to be Don Drysdale. That game was televised on the local StL. NBC affiliate KSDK. It was a late start here in StL. and my younger brother and I were staying at our grandparents house for about a week during the summer. The Dodgers scored a 1st inning run on a Gibson WP that rolled all the way to the backstop at Dodger Stadium and easily allowed the runner at 3B to score. I’ll never forget that the runner on 3B blatently jumped and landed with both feet onto HP to emphasize that Gibson’s streak had been broken. I wanted to kill him for that taunting gesture…Haha! Gibson didn’t allow another run after than 1st inning and defeated Drysdale and the Dodgers by a 5-1 final and in his next outing in SF he shutout the Giants and would have set the record for scoreless innings pitched and consecutive shutouts if not for that one ill-timed WP. In any event, I’m not sure you can dream up a better pitching match-up than Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale.
August 6, 2023 at 12:18 pm #230791Lots of chatter about what’s perceived as a resurgence of Matz. He’s pitched well for a little while, but I think the hype is just what the doctor ordered for Johnny’s mistake of signing him for 4 years and all it’ll do is create false hopes for next season. Someone mentioned not too long ago that it’s no big deal when a player performs well when the performance has no bearing on the fortunes of a team and I’m of the same mindset. All kinds of pitchers perform well in spring training games.
August 6, 2023 at 12:53 pm #230794Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard early this Sunday afternoon:
The Nationals have jumped on the slumping Reds with at least four runs in the 1st. It’s 4-0 Washington in the top of the 1st at Riverfront Stadium. The Reds have lost five in a row.
The Pirates and Brewers are no score on the top of the 1st at Miller Park.
The Braves and Cubs are scoreless in the top of the 1st at Wrigley Field.

August 6, 2023 at 1:24 pm #230797Today’s turnstile count looks to be 9,638 but that could change because it’s early. A lot of them will probaly leave by the 6th inning…
August 6, 2023 at 1:43 pm #230800Denton posted this last night bling.
#STLCards LHP Zack Thompson will get the start on Sunday vs. the #Rockies. He will serve as an opener and the bullpen will be leaned on heavily.

August 6, 2023 at 2:18 pm #230802Thompson went four innings. Isn’t that a starter’s workload for the Cardinals?
August 6, 2023 at 2:30 pm #230803My wife, who doesn’t watch the games and doesn’t follow these things closely, just passed through and commented there are a lot of empty seats. She took exception to Caray’s “great attendance this series” remark. She wondered if it’s because of the high cost. I got a kick out of that and told her yep, and maybe because the team sucks a little this year too. Haha.
August 6, 2023 at 2:34 pm #230804Even with the emptiy seats it is great attendance for a last place team that has thrown in the towel.
August 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm #230805Half way through and zip on 4 scattered hits. Pitchings been good. We need to put 2 hits together.
August 6, 2023 at 3:20 pm #230806Thompson had a nice 4 innings. I wonder if that gets him another start. Mo’s looking for guys to pencil in.
August 6, 2023 at 3:43 pm #230807Sheesh!

jj-cf-stlParticipantRomero has the pitches to be a starter.
I like his assortment better than Hudson, Liberatore and Woodford.
August 6, 2023 at 3:51 pm #230809One more out to go, let’s see a little fight boys.
Speaking of fight, wonder how many games suspension this will get you, compared to what Mikolas did to get his five?
August 6, 2023 at 3:52 pm #230810It’s not that big of a deal, but for some time it’s been a little annoying that one of the graphics at the bottom of the TV screen on the Cardinal telecasts is used to display both the velocity of the current pitch and the inning number so that when the mph reading of any particular pitch is displayed, the inning number is nowhere to be found. I would think that the producers of these broadcasts could reserve a small space at the bottom of the screen somewhere that would constantly display the number of the inning that’s being played. I mean, that’s pretty important and in my view is secondary only to the score of the game.
August 6, 2023 at 3:55 pm #230811A yawner. No reason to go downtown and drink $14 beers to see that.
Everybody can suddenly pitch now. It must be the ups and downs of their season.
August 6, 2023 at 4:02 pm #230812Haha!…The other day I happened to once again stumbled across a clip of the hard right hand from Odor that looked like it should have broken Bautista’s jaw. Odor looked as though he’d spent spring trraining under the tutelage of Angelo Dundee…
August 6, 2023 at 4:24 pm #230813Now at 15 games under. I think the worst this season was 16 games. They’ll have something to avoid in Tampa on Tues.
