Pork TwainParticipant12:35pm: The Cardinals have traded DeJong to the Blue Jays, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. The Blue Jays are sending righty Matt Svanson to St. Louis in the deal, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

August 1, 2023 at 1:00 pm #230109Svanson only in high A so thats a way into the future piece.
August 1, 2023 at 1:02 pm #230110He is 24. Hopefully he is a late bloomer.
August 1, 2023 at 1:05 pm #230111Blurb on Svanson
The 24-year-old has spent most of this season at High-A, amassing a phenomenal 1.11 ERA, 2.48 FIP, 10.86 K/9, and 58.03 GB%. He also has not allowed a single home run though 32.1 innings of work. As it currently stands, Svanson has the makings of an impactful reliever at the major league level within a few years.
August 1, 2023 at 1:06 pm #230113Probably will go to AA with the Cardinals. Can’t expect much with the money DeJong is making and the buyout of his option years. He’s a good filler for TOR while Bo is out though and then may see some time at 2B when Bo is back.
August 1, 2023 at 1:07 pm #230114We got more than a sack of Idaho Potatoes for DeJong so I have to tip my cap to Mo on this one.
We need to keep Flaherty and resign him.
August 1, 2023 at 1:16 pm #230117I don’t want to keep Flaherty.
I bet he’s hurt again before this time next year.
August 1, 2023 at 1:19 pm #230118No, we do not need to keep Flaherty.
August 1, 2023 at 1:20 pm #230120Yeah, I have no interest in keeping Flaherty. Ship him and Edman to LAD for some prospects. That should net a pretty good haul. I like Edman, but they need controllable pitching and have to trade something.
August 1, 2023 at 1:35 pm #230127August 1, 2023 at 2:23 pm #230150Last year at this time, we would have received absolutely nothing in return for the services of Paul Sterling DeJong. This year we get a late bloomer with a heck of a lot of upside in the person of Mathew Patrick Svanson. This deal right here may surprisingly bear more fruit than the Montgomery and Hicks deals. I’m higher than a kite on this big lug!

jj-cf-stlParticipantNow that PDJ is gone, I’d prefer we keep Edman as the everyday SS.

Sack of potatoes, lol. Barely but most likely the player received in the trade we won’t hear the name again after today.
Nope, JD should have been traded long ago.
August 1, 2023 at 4:46 pm #230192I would love to keep Flaherty – good #3 starter for next year. But doubt it will happen.
August 1, 2023 at 4:48 pm #230193Would you want him at $20M?

ParticipantBest news of the day. So long Paulie D.
August 1, 2023 at 4:50 pm #230197I don’t like Flaherty for $10M much less $20M. Heck no.
August 1, 2023 at 10:38 pm #230335This kid might be a decent reliever at some point….
August 1, 2023 at 10:40 pm #230336If the Cardinals had kept DeJong, it would have cost them roughly 5M, 3M for the rest of 2023 plus the 2M buyout payable to DeJong during the offseason. It will be interesting to see how much cash the Cardinals had to send to Toronto to make this deal happen. In my opinion the 24 year old, High A relief pitcher they got back from Toronto is incidental. I respect the Toronto organization enough to think that, if their talent evaluators thought he was a good enough prospect, he would have been at least up to AA. All in all it seems like a good trade for both sides. The Cardinals open up a roster spot and save a few million dollars, and the Blue Jays get a competent, major league shortstop for cheap.
