Note this doesn’t mean he still couldn’t be traded for something of value. It lets the other teams know he is available and sets a deadline for offers.

Based upon some of the lefties who can still find a job, he should get a chance somewhere. Good luck to him.

    Picked up from MLBTR

Cabrera is affordable ($950K salary in 2023), controllable and has a minor league option remaining. He entered the current season with just over three years of Major League service time, so he can be controlled through the 2025 campaign.

Not another example of the Front Office not being able to evaluate talent. I hated this trade when it was announced even with my personal dislike of Tommy Pham. When I pointed out how it was a bad trade I was mocked for it.

The trade was addition by subtraction.

BHC, I recall we disagreed at the time, but that was over Cabrera’s future role. The scouts I spoke with thought he could make it as a starter. You said reliever and were proven right.

I also agree with bccran that it was time for Pham to move on. He is now with his fifth team since leaving StL and will likely be traded again in the next two weeks. Seven teams in six years is probably not coincidence.

As I remember it, he couldn’t throw strikes when we got him. He was young with a hot arm, so OK. But we should have cut bait before now.

At the time of the trade, Cabrera was 21 and still a starter in the minors. He had his good flashes since, as recently as last season. And it isn’t like there were a lot of lefties coming up to take his job away. He still had minor league options so it made sense to keep him around (if they weren’t willing to acquire someone better).

Instead, since the Cecil debacle, they picked up a series of marginal lefties off the waiver wire who were even worse than Cabrera.

IIRC we moved up the system quickly despite control issues and too much traffic.

Jo Jo Romero may have knocked Cabrera off of the roster.

I dunno about moving fast. Cabrera had 140 innings at Double-A and another 100 at Triple-A before coming up. Compare that to Hicks with zero and zero, respectively.

Maybe so Brian. I’m going just on memory, which I sometimes reconfigure to my liking.

I was thinking about the Romero angle too. I’m ok with giving him a chance the rest of the season.

Interesting that they cleared a spot on the 40 man by DFAing Cabrera. O’Neill would need a 40-man space since he’s coming off the 60-day DL. But what pitcher would replace Cabrera?

Thomas, Walsh, and Zuniga are on the 40 man but have been ineffective. And Thomas and Zuniga haven’t pitched in July, I think. I’d think they would keep Liberatore in AAA for a bit to make adjustments. Naile? His ERA is over 11.

This seems more like a “clear space for a better pitcher” than “clear space for O’Neill move.

I wonder if the Cards will add Suarez to the 40-man. His last two outings have been starts, albeit 4 and 3.2 innings. He started 29 games in MLB back in 2018. Maybe a couple months audition to see if he’s a candidate for the fifth spot or a long relief/sixth starter spot?

Maybe, Gags. But there aren’t many starters left at Triple-A so that immediate need may be why they decided to give Suarez a shot.

Hudson and Thompson are back in StL. Thomas is on the IL. As it is, they have been using Tommy Parsons, who has made 14 starts and has yet to collect a win to go with a 7.65 ERA. They tried Komar from Springfield for one start but he bombed so they sent him right back down. Grant Black made a spot start and James Naile made three. Pass the band-aids!

The only “sure things” are McGreevy, Graceffo and Liberatore.

P.S. Like Thomas, Zuniga is on the IL. So if a 40-man reliever is needed immediately, it would be either Naile (who was the 27th man on Saturday) or Walsh, who as you noted, has struggled.

Likely. But also Cabrera isn’t helping himself and I think he’s got a shoulder problem. His velocity is way down. Last few appearances you could see the slime of “icy hot” soaking through his jersey on the left shoulder. Carlos Martinez had the same thing a few years back, then was on the IL with a shoulder issue.

Maybe, but he also could’ve been involved in a simple top-side pick and roll with Shaq…

Well that certainly rules them out.

His numbers in the minors look great and he has a good track record aside from the horrible start to this year. I was hoping the Cardinals signed him before last year instead of VerHagen and McFarland

I think this is the brass 1) don’t see Cabrera as part of the future, 2) they are getting ready to unload Hicks, Stratton, maybe more from the pen, 3) they don’t have arms in AAA to fill those holes, 4) he’s a veteran arm that can fill a hole and try to be good enough to catch on with someone next year.

With his current whip of 2.077 he will fit right in

35 year old guy got released in May. I wonder what he’s been doing the last couple months. Even if everybody we have in AAA stinks, I don’t see why we wouldn’t let somebody get in the reps.

I predict he makes one or two outings and goes on the IL.

Tepera’s 2023 mlb results suggest he was pitching thru injury, but then he lands a minors deal after and pitches like he’s healthy.
Innings rental for the pro-rated minimum. Why not I guess.
