I was pretty dissapointed in the usage of Tink Hence. And now in the AFL he is only pitching an inning. Does the FO see him as a reliever? He was never allowed to pitch more than 4 innings during the regular minor league season, which seemed a waste after his first few starts. And he never was promoted despite an ERA in the 1s.
Hence is too valuable to not start. I would be stunned if he doesn’t in 2023. What his future MLB role will be will depend on many factors we cannot predict right now.
The AFL is a different animal. The Cards got one starter and they picked Thomas. It has worked out well. Hence has impressed in relief and has drawn a lot of national attention. He will rise up the national prospect lists in the spring, I predict.
Hence is my top prospect to watch. Walker and Winn I think will be stars, but Hence still has some hurdles to cross. He could be a top 10 to 20 overall prospect.
Its too bad we have so little to go on after two pro seasons, but that’s how they do it these days. He looked good in 60 innings of low A and in AFL. I am anxious to see him go more than once through the lineup.
-With so much hype about Connor Thomas during his time in the AFL, I’m really looking forward to seeing what he brings to Spring Training in 2023.
Yeah, me too mudville. I am interested to see what Liberatore does also. They both regressed as far as AAA results last year, doing worse that they had done previously. But now they both have benefit of hype, which ratchets up interest. Sending Thomas out to rough up the AFLers was a good move in that sense, and we have the working on stuff speculation generating some buzz. But in the end, they will have to be able to dominate AAA opponents or they will not do well in MLB no matter the hype.
I don’t think Thomas was hyped at all. He had a rough season and dropped in our monthly prospect rankings as a result. He found a new pitch and renewed confidence and was recognized as the very best pitcher in a league of prospects this fall. It earned him a 40-man spot when coming in, it looked like he would not be protected. Of course, he still has to do more to win an MLB job, but he earned the attention received to date. No hype, IMO.
