I look for Oviedo to give the bullpen a rest by going into the later innings and giving us good chance to win the (night cap). He will need to keep his pitch count down and show the organization that he is ready for the majors. He is a starter and I hope that the Cards don’t tinker with that.

A solid start tonight may move him up on the depth chart. He has a chance to make the biggest splash of this very unusual season (roster-wise). Any thoughts on that?

I agree with you, NyquisT. Brian mentioned on yesterday’s Danny Mac podcast that Oviedo and Ponce may be in a dance to see who gets to be that 6th starter in the upcoming busy stretch. I think Oviedo has a chance to be a #3 type starter and Ponce is basically a #5 due to his inconsistent pitch counts, so the Cards may be leaning toward giving Oviedo more run. I really hope he forces their hand with great pitching (and Ponce pitches well too).

I agree about Oviedo. He has an extremely bright future and while we thought it would start in 2021 he might as well take advantage of the situation now. I agree that he should develop into a solid #3 and be an innings eater for us for years to come. At least that is the plan.

It’s being said Oviedo is stretched out as well as anyone in the org, so lets hope he auditions well again for the SP5 role.

What I MEANT to say is that CMart is being added as the sixth, but with a good start tonight, Oviedo could jump to the front of the line of the extra starters for DHs (ahead of Woodford, Gomber, etc.) I also speculated that if Ponce cannot pitch deeper into games and Oviedo keeps looking good that Oviedo could take his job (as one of the regular six starters).

Sorry if I misconstrued what you said. I think I’m tracking with you on your meaning now. I agree that Ponce probably keeps his spot for now but Oviedo could make some inroads if he’s able to pitch deeper and more effectively into games. From this fan’s aesthetic view, Ponce’s games can really drag with high pitch counts and he doesn’t work super fast either.

No problem, stlcard25. Conveniently, DannyMac had already extracted that section. (Click on the blue play button in the center of the photo for the one-minute clip.)

    The Pirates’ lineup tonight, by batting average: .260, .184, .204, .186, .127, .255, .132, .148, .167.

Needless to say, the Cards should have a shot to pitch well. More importantly, it would be nice for the offense to score 7+ to make things easier on them yet.

I see the Pirates are on the “we’re gonna get lucky double plays every time the Cards get a base runner” plan again tonight.

Schrock just about got Goldy killed at 1B to end the second. All this shifting of positions is hurting the defense.

The Cards start the 2nd with a walk and a single. Dylan Carlson is up and looking to do some damage. And…of course it’s another freaking double play.

The Pirates and their team .180 average or whatever it is haven’t missed their chances tonight so far. A nearly insurmountable 2 run lead has been opened up.

Oviedo is through 4, with two runs allowed. 0 strikeouts.

Oviedo finishes the 5th with a K. That’s 2 runs allowed in 5 innings once again. Under normal circumstances, that should be enough to put him in line for the win.

well our offense is struggling again with fundamental baseball. Last inning we get a lead off double and he doesnt move from there. 2 pop ups and a strike out. thats just unacceptable. A ground ball right side gets him over, a ground ball not at somebody probably gets him in. I know they dont teach top center hitting of the baseball but sometimes it needs to be done. pop ups there just dont get it done.

This team needs a bat. Its been obvious for a long time.

Who is out there that is available?

nice hit by miller but if we had even part of that the first game we might have won it.

Well not sure ratsbuddy. We got some guys who can hit but when we need that big hit like runners on third or moving guys over, they cant get it done. Miller right there is a big case and point.

I wonder if BW finally agrees that we have a problem with the offense in 2020 after Mo’s big risk.

Offense is bad, bullpen not much better…just not a very good team….
