The distinct pattern of squandered late inning leads continued with another 9th inning collapse by the Bogsider from Derry in last night’s game. It’s a genuine oddity that O’Riley O’Brien also happens to be tied for the NL lead in SV’s with 36. He’s certainly been lackluster at times as his ERA has now spiked to 4.20 which is obviously too far north for a closer. I’ve enjoyed watching him work this season, but I don’t think he’s the answer for the 9th inning in ’27 or beyond. However, you can be entirely certain that if he hadn’t realized some genuine success during several stretches this season, the Cardinals would have been long ago buried to depths of the unknown…The Redbirds will try to avoid a season low water mark of 4 games under .500 this afternoon. It’s my best guess that without the presense of the Bogsider this season, they’d be somewhere close to settling at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

That stat line by Hjerpe from yesterday is ugly!! Although OB put the icing on the cake, Hjerpe did the mixing and baking.

In a way I am not overly upset. I often chose a team to root for in October when our club falls out, and this year it is the White Sox. Going to a game there this summer and their rise from being so bad makes me want them to have some magic in October.

But if those pesky Guardians prevail in the ALC I am okay with them as well. Those two have a big series coming up this week in Cleveland.

Yeah, if a team can lose 324 games during the last 3 seasons and then follow that up with being situated in 1st place on Sept. 13th, what’s the alibi coming from the Cardinal bosses to explain away being a small step from sinking into last place? Maybe they should start trying a little harder to be good.

I mentioned the other day that, although he has a long way to go, White Sox 3B’man Vargas looks like he’s attempting to channel the Oscar Gamble look regarding his hairstyle. It made me think of a quote attributed to the former White Sox and Yankee OF’er that has to be right up there with some of the classic lines put forth by Lawrence B…Gamble, when asked about the state of the Yankee clubhouse at the time replied, “They don’t think it be like it is, but it do”…

That little man snagged himself a souvenir. And you may have noticed that he’s manning up with a Rawlings mitt on his glove hand…Good for him!

We have zero hits through 5 innings. How could that be?

More importantly, we also have zero runs.

I’m not at all sure that Church is the answer to an everyday Redbird CF’er, but you almost have to include him on the 26 man.

Pugs out of action today as I’m in US Bank Stadium as we speak, getting ready to watch the Packers drill the Queens(Vikings). I’m calling it 27-20 Pack. Hope our Birds can get the job done vs the ChiSox.

I’m thinking Starr to Dowler for the quick 6…Enjoy the action, Pugs.

3 unearned runs. I’ll take it. Good guys win.

I was sure Soriano was going to find a way to give it away. He didn’t.

A pat on the back to Burley for coming through when we needed it. Better us than them.

So now we have another go at the Giants.

Pugs, you are a Packers fan too right? My complaint with modern NFL coaches is being too smart for their own britches. I don’t understand the Packers going for it on 4th down earlier in the 4th quarter instead of kicking the easy FG to go yo by 8 at the time.

As for football, it seems a lot of games in both college and pro coaches forgo an easy 3 and go for it on fourth down. And it seems quite often it has cost them the game.

Also I think too often coaches make mistakes by calling an ass when keeping the ball on the ground is working.

Just a couple of random thoughts. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Jim Taylor belongs to the days of yore…And so do I when it comes to even glancing at an NFL football game anymore…

I’m not old enough to remember Vince Lombardi but I do remember Hank Stram. 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Real football isn’t played any more.

Stram and Lombardi were the head coaches in Super Bowl I.

I clearly recall watching that first Super Bowl. At that time I probably had nearly as many NFL trading cards as I did Big League cards. I can recall my three most highly prized football cards in those days were Johnny U. Bart Starr and Gale Sayers. And I was insanely fanatic about NFL football for many years until my interest began to diminish in the early 90’s when the game really started to deteriorate into something that looked foolish. Now, I can’t bear to watch more than a minute or two before I have to flip the channel to something more interesting. Foghorn Leghorn is always a good go to…

    What happened to this thread?

Football is just something to fill the empty time between the World Series and spring training.

Big time Packers fan, Albert. I echo Scotty’s post the other day when he said something along the lines of “if the cubbies were playing the Russians, coached by Vladimir Putin, I’d be rooting like heck for the Rooskies”. I would definitely add both the Bears and ViQueens to that equation. That 4th quarter in Minneapolis yesterday was the most nightmarish quarter of football I’ve experienced. I had Vikes fans to the right of me…….to the left of me……in back of me…..and in front of me……and boy did they rub it in …….hopefully the football Gods will get them but good for their mocking ways.

Those were some pretty sweet 1960’s football cards, TD. Hopefully you keep them out of your purple Stingray’s bike spokes and in pristine condition.

Some of my most enjoyable evenings in the winter are watching old Youtube clips of Vince Lombardi. His quotes and antics are priceless. Hank Stram too. Those two were truly gems. One of the most iconic pics from Super Bowl I is Len Dawson sitting in the lockeroom during halftime smoking a cigarette. That is something you wouldn’t see today.

As a long time Chiefs fan we still owe the mighty Pack. Hopefully they will have a Super Bowl rematch someday.

It’s nice to be included in such an exclusive club, BW. I enjoy not having the mainstream riff-raff around when I’m enjoying the pleasures of watching a baseball game…
