The Ferminator does his job leading off, as he lines a single up the middle while making Skubal throw 7 pitches….now Herrera lines a single to left center sending The Ferminator over to 3rd. And the Birds are business right off the bat here in the city of Angels.
Walker strikes out chasing some high heat.
Baez goes the other way and slaps a base hit to right…….1-0 Birds with Herrera stopping at 2nd.
Bernal blisters a liner ticket to left, but the SS leaps high to snatch it and they’ll double Herrera off at 2nd to retire the side…….Skubal was fooling nobody except Walker in the 1st inning.
The 4 Minor League affiliates get a clean sweep tonight. Doyle and Odle both had great performances.
Urias scorches a base hit to left scoring Herrera and it’s 2-0 Cards. 8 hits off Scubal through 2 2/3 innings. 60 pitches for Skubal already……he’s on track to go only 5 frames.
I can identify with what you mentioned regarding Lasorda and the Dodger dugout, Pugs. Many may recall that Tommy always seemed to have a special sort of affection for Kurt Bevaqua…
Funny stuff, TD! I vaguely recall Tommy’s words directed to Mr. Bevaqua, other than it was laced with a ton of profanities. I’d love to to hear the tape or see the transcript…….just for the heck of it.
Bernal may be a titch shaky defensively over at 1st base…..of all positions. Just a hunch I have……..time will tell.
Haha…I’ve been led to understand that arranging the letters on a typsetter in a manner required to print the transcript of Tommy’s warm and tender words to Kurt has been deemed unlawful by the superior courts…Those guys don’t know how to have any fun.

Yeah Pugs, looked like that pitch was simply up and in and skipped off of Pages’ mitt to the backstop. I’m pretty sure Pedro would say he should have squeezed it.
Looks like I wasn’t the only one to fall asleep in the middle of the game. Tough loss, but still a wonderful series.
I missed this one entirely. Its too bad Riley blew it but the pen as a whole has turned in a bunch of good one inning stints during the Dodger series.
Frustrating loss for sure. However, they took two of three from the Dodgers on the road and saw some good stuff from this team in the process. I am really excited to see how this season wraps up and what the future will bring. I totally trust in Chaim’s plan!
Now, go to Colorado and take two of three…

Rah Cardinals!I’ve watched some of the game on replay. It is clear Mathews control was not real good. The box score shows 11 first pitch strikes out of 23 batters faced, so he was pitching behind in the count a lot. That probably explains the traffic. 4 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. And the pitch count, 99 pitches to go 5 innings. Only 1 run, so could have been worse.
The first hope has to be that he avoids any further arm trouble. If he can stay on the mound, then even if his control does not return to what it was, he has a chance to learn how to best use what he’s got, and so should get better results. I hope he and his handlers can come up with a strategy to get more first pitch strikes without getting his head knocked off. That would really help I think.
I watched the first 4 innings. Mathews had a lot of borderline pitches called balls (they were all legit balls but one, but really close to being either). However, he was missing by a lot on the others that weren’t close. Part of this seems to be his “game” and it worked better in the Minors than Majors. Had most of the close ones been 5mm closer, they would have been strikes and he may have gone 6 instead of 5. I would like him to clean up some of the waste pitches. The changeup in the dirt and throwing the high fastball 6 inches above the zone seemed to be the 2 culprits last night that added to his pitch count and very rarely got a swing. I’m less worried about the fastball getting there because often it is. The changeup though may need either some practice or rework in the offseason to be able to place it more frequently just under or at the bottom of the zone rather than in the dirt.
Mathews, despite his flaws, has the most talent in our rotation today. I would expect him to be far better than any of the others over his career. I’ve always been a Pallante fan, but sometimes he relies heavily on ground ball luck to save him. I like McGreevey and Leahy too but their pitches are often average or a little below average and they get by on location (which is good) and on the fact they pitch half their games at Busch and nearly all their games in front of a very good defense (which is more lucky).
