no worries CC…i didnt take it that way… even for me, that last one was a doozy, i can do better
—
as much as i understand that moving guys for the sake of moving them even if it means losing some value is relatively frowned upon for good reason… why i bring it up is that we have a lot of parts that we coudl do just that at, which either because of low value due to performance or low value for defensive reasons or for their production not matching their salary coudl be lost at a low rate and nto hurt us because we have other options to take their place which mitigates the sacrificed loss
i dont think you move them for nothing (outside of maybe Fowler and Holland), but you dont have to get the better end of the deal…call it change of scenery or whatever, but losing them isnt that big of a deal and losing what value they had isnt either
The guys i would suggest moving so as to move into a new era for the Cards even at low value are:
-Holland…all we should hope for is a little salary relief
-Fowler…normally i woudl say the same as Holland BUT I woudl suggest holding him as long as possible in hopes he regains a little value…btu even if he starts tearing it up i woudl move him…get the most for him but dont keep him past the deadline…even at a loss, get what you can
-Gyorko…not a bad guy not bad player, but just isnt consistent enough to warrant not moving him..fresh start…and he should be desirable to a playoff team wanting a power versatile bench player
-Wong…change of scenery, carries value and upside with hsi contract and defense…get something decent but we have kids who could do better at the plate even if they sac a little in the field
-Pham…change of scenery, his disappointment with the Cardinals has been vocalized by him and his streaky play and kids waiting means we coudl replace him…you take a chance on losing him if he turns a corner, but he has already provided more value than he ever was projected to offer…he shoudl bring back a decent value but not spectacular
-JMart…needs to be in the AL…we should get something decent but not great…again he has already provided more value than he ever was supposed to…we may sell low but it isnt really a loss
-GGarcia…he is arb eligible next year…are we really going to keep him and pay him with so many other internal options? move him now maybe to a contender wanting that pinch hitting lefty off the bench with versatility…i like the guy, he is a good Cardinal but we get no value if we dont move him now and not re-sign him
-Tuivalala…never lived up to the hype but is young enough to attract a suitor..wont get much
-NOrris…had real value to a team wanting to shore up or deepen the back end of their pen for a stretch run…again already provided more value than he was supposed to
at the end of the day we’d get back hypothetically:
– a few mid level prospects top 50 in a system
– maybe a couple older but still decent prospects…maybe top 20 but something not great about them
– maybe one good redundant prospect…top 20 prospect, probably far away
– a solid MLB reliever…veteran with a bigger salary or a few years
– maybe 3-4 lottery tickets…
and all of it is replaceable: (at least in the short term)
-Wong-Schrock
-Gyorko-Wisdom
-Garcia-Munoz
-JMart-Carp/Voit/Ravelo
-Pham-Bader/MErcado/Oneill
-Tui-Mayers
-Norris-Hicks/Greene (returning injured players)
-Fowler-kids
-Holland-vet RP or injured returnees
