the Arozarena trade looks terrible in hindsight, etc.
The Arozarena for Liberatore trade only looks terrible if the other outfield Tampa was considering was Lane Thomas. If it was Tyler O’Neill, I don’t know too many people who would have chosen to give him up instead. For one, he was already in the majors, and two, if you look at his slugging percentage this year, this is what everyone was hoping for.
If Dewitt had told Mo to be patient, then we are much better today.
Throughout their tenure, they have played the long game. They infamously always came in second for big free agents. The Ozuna trade came after we had missed the playoffs. Fans were clamoring for SOMETHING from the front office, and we had gone several years without a middle-of-the-order bat.
In retrospect, the Ozuna deal looks like the worst of the bunch. He was injured when we acquired him, and did not perform to his levels in Miami. Alcantara and Gallen are now both established pitchers that would do wonders in our current rotation.
The Goldy deal looks bad, just because Goldy entered such a precipitous decline upon being traded to St. Louis (and that was a lot to give up for one year of him).
As barren as the system is now, I don’t see them doing trades for awhile.
