I cannot see the future, but the agreement does allow MLB to hold the 2022 period on the same dates as 2021 if they so choose. Other than if they want to synch up dates with an international draft, I cannot imagine why they would go back to July 2nd, but that is just a wild guess. Seems like for budgetary purposes, a calendar year orientation would be better, but maybe there is a scouting benefit going with July.
