No, it doesn’t cost much to rent a motor coach for the day to drive 40 miles or less, though it is clearly less convenient. An uneven number of MLB teams in the area means there is at least one camp day every day for some organization. I’ve never asked, but my guess is that they like having more control of the environment in camp games. As long as the players get the work in, the opponent is far less important. It is not like MLB spring training, where they are selling tickets, creating a fan expectation as well.
