Behind Player of the Day Dylan Carlson’s two extra-base hits and two RBI, Springfield claimed the only Tuesday win across the St. Louis Cardinals system. Memphis and Peoria pitching were bombed and uneven Alex Reyes could not lead Palm Beach to victory.

The Redbirds’ losing streak reached seven with an 8-0 defeat to the Missions in the fifth of their six-game set. Memphis (23-30) has fallen into third place in the American Northern Division, nine games behind Iowa (CHC).
Evan Kruczynski (L, 0-1) was pummeled for six tallies in 14 hits and a walk over six innings. Chasen Shreve, Dominic Leone and first baseman John Nogowski each pitched a frame. Shreve and Leone both yielded single scores though Shreve’s run was unearned due to a passed ball charged to catcher Andrew Knizner.
The home team was held to just five hits, including three by shortstop Tommy Edman, who went 3-for-4 with a double out of the lead-off slot. Defensively, it was a mixed bag for left fielder Rangel Ravelo who was credited with an outfield assist at home plus another at third but committed his third miscue. Center fielder Adolis Garcia was also credited with an outfield assist, at second base.
Wednesday’s game: vs. San Antonio (33-20) (MIL), 6:35 pm CT, Jake Woodford (3-1, 3.02)
The S-Cards began a six-game homestand by downing the Drillers, 7-4. Fourth-place Springfield (20-31) trails Arkansas (SEA) by 13 games in the Texas League’s North Division standings.
Offense carried the team to victory, led by Player of the Day Dylan Carlson, who doubled and tripled in four at bats, worked a free pass, touched home three times and drove in two. Irving Lopez went 2-for-4 as well, including a solo shot that was one of the two times he crossed home plate. Five Springfield players had one hit each.
Williams Perez picked up the win, his fifth in seven decisions, by striking out seven Drillers in six frames while holding them to five hits and two walks. Half of the four runs yielded by Perez were generated by a two-run home run.
Junior Fernandez faced just one over the minimum during his three-inning stint and that was due to a free pass. The righty struck out four and earned his second Double-A save.
Wednesday’s game: vs. second-place Tulsa (27-23) (LAD), 6:30 pm CT, Angel Rondon (0-0, 4.09)
Alex Reyes reached his pitch count during the fifth as the Cards fell to the Tortugas, 5-2, in the series opener. First-place Palm Beach (31-19) leads the South Division by two games over Bradenton (PIT).
Reyes (L, 0-1) was tagged for three runs on seven hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings, although only one of the three tallies was earned. Both unearned tallies occurred in the third due to a missed catch error by first baseman Zach Kirtley. Reyes threw 77 pitches, 48 for strikes, and four of his five leadoff batters reached against him.
The earned run allowed by Reyes scored under C.J. Saylor’s watch after the reliever inherited runners at first and second with one gone. Saylor yielded a two-out RBI single. Overall, the California native permitted two hits and a walk with three outs recorded.
Eli Kraus retired five batters, giving up a hit and stranding two inherited runners. Ben Yokley went two innings, surrendering a two-run bomb that gave the visitors breathing room.
Both of the Beach Birds’ runs occurred in the first on three singles, a walk and a sac fly. The team was held to just three more hits plus two walks the rest of the way. The only Palm Beach player with a multi-hit effort was Yariel Gonzalez, who singled twice in four at bats with an RBI.
Defensively, Kirtley’s bobble was one of three Palm Beach miscues. Jose Martinez was charged with a fielding error after moving from short to second mid-game and his replacement at short, Michael Perri, committed a throwing error. On the plus side, centerfielder Scott Hurst and left fielder Lars Nootbaar were each credited with an outfield assist, at second and third, respectively, or the scoring gap could have been greater.
Wednesday’s game: vs. Daytona (28-23) (CIN), 6:30 pm ET, Tommy Parsons (3-0, 2.82)
Chiefs pitching was mauled by the visiting Cougars in the series opener, 9-1, a game shortened to seven innings due to rain. Seventh-place Peoria (21-29) is 12 ½ games in back of Quad Cities (HOU) in the Western Division standings.
Diego Cordero (L, 2-4) yielded five runs, three earned, on eight hits over six innings, including a two-out solo shot in his final inning of work. The right-hander did not issue a free pass and struck out four.
All five batters facing Sebastian Tabata in the seventh reached as the 21-year-old gave up one hit, walked three and plunked one, leading to four tallies. Fabian Blanco fared little better during his brief stint, issuing two free passes that scored two of Tabata’s runners while recording one out before the game was called. Both Cordero (two) and Tabata (one) were called for balks.
Five Chiefs each gathered one hit, with the team’s sole score coming in the sixth. Nolan Gorman doubled with one gone, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed home after Ivan Herrera singled to left. The third baseman and shortstop Delvin Perez were each charged with an error.
Wednesday’s game: vs. third-place Kane County (28-23) (ARI), 6:35 pm CT, Colin Schmid (1-1, 3.75)
