Memphis at New Orleans, 6:30 pm CT, Genesis Cabrera (0-1, 10.22)
Springfield vs. Frisco – 11:10 am CT, Harold Arauz (0-0, 4.05)
Palm Beach and Peoria offWith April winding down there are some pitchers that have had excellent months. Woodford (MEM), Shew(a little bumpy but that’s Springfield he’s pitching for), PB’s Oviedo, Rondon, Fagalde (before his last blow-up) plus Parsons & Cordero from Peoria.
Players = Sosa(very quietly .334 but only 3BBs) Toerner (mashing at Palm Beach… the tough league) and Gorman has been what we all hoped for and more. Brady Whalen (if not for Gorman).
For the Cards: easy Ozuna (10HRs/26RBIs) plus that replay for the ages that actually turned him around after a slow start. Flaherty (no contest).
Arauz is pulled in the sixth, but the damage is already done. Springfield down 6-0.
Interesting that Austin Warner is pitching in relief.
Ugly. Warner loaded the bases and was pulled for Whitley, who walked in one and wild pitched another home. Cards now down 8-0 in the middle of the sixth.

Sosa’s impatience is mildly troubling, it’s true Ny. But he’s hitting for avg./power, and we can’t ask for more than that from a shortstop in a bad hitting environment. (Road games only this year: .394 average, .636 slugging.)
I’ve found the Cardinal catcher cache pretty exciting so far. At Palm Beach, 21-year-old Julio Rodriguez is hitting .339 with a 169 wRC+. Molina heir apparent Andrew Knizner is batting. 333 with a .400 OBP, is yet to commit a passed ball, and has gunned 46% of basestealers.
And maybe most fun of all, 18-year-old Ivan Herrera has a 166 wRC+ for Peoria after a 155 and 160 at the lower pro levels in 2017 and 2018, respectively. (After his severe PB troubles last year, Herrera also has not permitted a passed ball, and like Knizner he’s showing solid plate discipline markers.) In fact, so far the three catchers cited here have combined for 20 walks and 31 strikeouts. Good sign for the future.

Sosa is running up a .400 BABIP that is not sustainable.
Shew was a bright spot in an otherwise struggling Springfield rotation. He just got the bump to Memphis and is scheduled to start for them on Wednesday. Quite an accomplishment for an UDFA.
Interestly, the promotion of Shew and the optioning of Helsley puts Memphis at 26. Is someone getting the bump down to Springfield? Fasola?
