Of course this happens now! The organization must feel that Shildt needs all the help he can get… and we’re stuck with him also (see Fowler). Shildt will be the guy putting Dexy in RF so that our high-priced team leader can get his long lost mojo back. Incredible.

Your prejudices show through again, Ny. This has almost nothing to with Shildt or Fowler as individuals. It is the front office wanting to get customized analytics in the hands of those who can use them. How anyone could spin this innocuous announcement into negativism amazes me. My goodness!

I think is a great idea. The more support the manager gets the better.

    I am still a card-carrying Cardinal fan.

I must get with Thejager and put up an appropriate challenge to these accusations of being negative. Something like “I should be able to post my opinions without being criticized and harassed”. Sabe ;). Good grief, how can you twist my comments merely to be critical.

14NyquisT, there will be disagreements on a message board but you remain welcome to express your views as I am to disagree with them. This is being done in a civil manner. Yes, I did criticize your reaction as it seems mismatched to the subject, including the closing of “Incredible” about an item that is not incredible at all. It is just a hiring of a staff guy. Further, not every Cardinals topic is about Fowler.

I think it might be fair to be critical in that you seem to be adding a layer due to the inability of two groups to communicate together.

On the other hand I see it as kind of a reverse systems analyst position. Where a systems analyst communicates user needs to the technical people, this position is taking existing technical information and communicating it to the users.

Is this position only at the major league level or does it spread further down to the minor leagues as well? Is it game specific or does it focus on player trends as well? (i.e. player x has been losing spin rate on his fastball over the last 5 starts) These might be good winter warm up questions!

If folks may recall, Shildt’s first job on the MLB staff was “quality control”. I went back to review how that job was represented, but it seemed more about getting the players to play “The Cardinal Way” than it was to focus on the use of analytics. What Shildt actually did every day before he was moved the next job is unknown. They did abolish the position after a half-season.

CC, I agree this will be a good thing to ask Shildt about at WWU.

Let’s see if Prebynski’s analytics can get Shildt to keep DF off of the field completely. It seems that our skipper can be easily swayed.

Bill DeWitt Jr. spoke about this with Bernie this morning. He mentioned the analytics guys have participated in meetings with Shildt and coaches this off-season, implying that is new. He said that more shifts coming next season is an example of what we might see as a result.

I found this segment very interesting. Eno Sarris notes that several organizations – he mentioned the Astros and Brewers specifically – are investing big on player development. How to better get performance from the players they have.

Note that the Cardinals’ new game planning coach comes from Milwaukee. And the hitting coach came from Houston. Maybe not coincidence.

Pugs, what number would you ask for? Based on his role, it probably should include something after the decimal point. 😉

Nice thought, Brian! The mathematician in me might opt for 3.14. But I always loved Jim Otto’s 00. But honestly, I think this Prebynski kid just might be a rising star in our nest.

well this is what they do with all their money instead of trying to get us better players. instead of that, they say spend the bulk of the money on either fifty fifty guys and unproven talent in the minors and hire a guy to try to make our average guys better by planning what shifts and defensive positions our players do. sounds about right.

Analytics are only part of the game. Curtis Vance from Redbird Rants wrote a quick read about the more important part of the game. Check it out.
