Cardinals Minor League Notebook – August 12, 2018

The St. Louis Cardinals system was 5-3 on Saturday. Player of the Day, Memphis third baseman Ramon Urias, went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. The Memphis, State College and DSL Blue staffs spun combined shutouts behind Chris Ellis, Franyel Casadilla and Enmanuel Solano.

Memphis 14 at Oklahoma City 0

Ramon Urias (Springfield Cardinals)

The Redbirds shellacked the Dodgers in Oklahoma City on Saturday.  The Memphis offense put up the first four of 14 runs in the second inning on Tommy Edman’s sac fly, Edmundo Sosa’s single, and Lane Thomas’ triple that plated two. Memphis added one in the sixth on a single by Ramon Urias.  Memphis added four runs in the eighth, after Tyler O’Neill and Justin Williams singled.  O’Neill came home on a throwing error, and Williams scored on an Alex Mejia double.  Sosa doubled to plate Mejia.  Sosa crossed home on Victor Roache’s single.  In the ninth, O’Neill singled, Williams walked, Mejia walked.  Urias singled, O’Neill and Williams scored.  Edman singled, Mejia and Urias crossed home.  Kevin Herget singled and Edman scored the fifth run of the inning.

Player of the Day Urias went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.  O’Neill and Sosa were both 2-for-5.  Williams was 2-for-3 and Edman was 2-for-4 in his Memphis debut.

Starter Tyler Lyons pitched two scoreless innings.  Chris Ellis followed with four scoreless frames to earn the win.  Brett Cecil, Dominic Leone, and Conner Greene each tossed an inning to preserve the shutout.

O’Neill had an outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home.

The Redbirds are 70-42 and are in first place in the PCL Southern.

Springfield 2 at Corpus Christi 5

The Cardinals were overcome at Corpus Christi by the Hooks on Saturday.  Starter Genesis Cabrera suffered his first loss as a Cardinal, after giving up three runs on four hits in two innings.  Elniery Garcia surrendered one run in his two innings pitched.  Eric Carter followed with two run-free frames.  Roel Ramirez pitched a scoreless seventh.  Will Latcham allowed one run in the eighth.

The Cardinals scored in the third on an RBI double by Andy Young.  A second run came home in the sixth on a wild pitch.  Young went 2-for-3.  John Nogowski went 2-for-4.

Blake Drake had an outfield assist.  Carter picked a runner off first base.

The Cardinals are 54-65 overall, 21-28 in the second half, and are in last place in the Texas League North.

Palm Beach 3, Lakeland 7

Conner Capel (Lynchburg Hillcats)

On a Saturday night at Roger Dean that began with a three-hour rain delay, the Cardinals were defeated by Lakeland by four runs.  The Cardinals scored in the second inning on a two-run single by Conner Capel.  Another run was added in the fourth on an RBI single by Juan Yepez.   Raffy Ozuna went 2-for-3.

Starter Evan Guillory went only 1 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits.  John Kilichowski followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief, during which one run was allowed.  Jason Zgardowski tossed three scoreless innings.  Mike O’Reilly surrendered two runs, one earned, over the final two innings.

Elehuris Montero made two errors, one fielding and one throwing.

The Cardinals are 62-50 overall and 23-25 in the second half to put them in third place in the FSL South.

Peoria 2, Clinton 5

Brandon Benson (State College Spikes)

The Chiefs fell to the Clinton LumberKings at Dozer Park on Saturday.  Peoria starter Alvaro Seijas went five innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on six hits.  Thomas St. Clair and Patrick Dayton each pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

The Chiefs scoring consisted of a third-inning, two run home run by Brandon Benson.  J.R. Davis went 2-for-4.

Seijas made a throwing error.  Nolan Gorman committed a fielding error.

The Chiefs are 67-49 overall, 28-18 in the second half, and are in second place in the Midwest League Western Division.

State College 2 at Auburn 0

Franyel Casadilla (The Cardinal Nation)

The Spikes shut out the Auburn Doubledays on Saturday.  Starter Franyel Casadilla pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, striking out three and walking three to earn his second win.  Troy Montemayor added two scoreless frames for his first save.

State College scored the only two runs of the game in the third inning.  Brady Whalen walked and stole second base.  Wadye Ynfante walked, Delvin Perez walked.  Cameron Knight singled to right with Whalen and Ynfante coming home.  Justin Toerner went 2-for-5.  Nick Dunn was 2-for-4.

Whalen stole his first base in his initial attempt.  Edwin Figuera was caught stealing for the third time in 15 tries as he was picked off first base.  Dunn was caught stealing for the third time in six attempts.

The Spikes are 25-30 on the season and are in third place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Johnson City vs. Princeton (doubleheader postponed)

The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to wet grounds.  Makeup dates for the games are yet to be determined.

Sunday’s games:   vs. Bristol, TBA, Game 1 of a doubleheader at 3:00 CT, Game 2 following.


GCL Cardinals 6 at GCL Mets 1

Brian Pirela (Dominican Summer League)

The Cardinals vanquished the Mets on Saturday.  Starter Brian Pirela won his eighth game of the season, after pitching seven one-run innings.  Pirela allowed four hits and fanned six.  Rodard Avelino and Alex Gallegos each added a scoreless inning of relief.

The Cardinals offense scored all six runs in the third inning.  Josh Shaw walked, Angel Moreno singled, and Carlos Soto launched a three-run home run to right field.  Zach Gahagan walked, William Jimenez walked.  With Cole Kreuter at the plate, Gahagan and Jimenez advanced on a balk.  Kreuter walked. Diomedes Del Rio singled and Gahagan and Jimenez scored. Del Rio was caught stealing second base and Kreuter scored on the throw.  Gahagan went 3-for-3.

Gahagan stole his third base in four attempts.  Del Rio was caught stealing for the third time in six tries.  Shaw made a fielding error.

The Cardinals are 30-15 on the season and are in first place in the GCL East.

DSL Cardinals Blue 4 at DSL Phillies Red 0

The Cardinals Blue blanked the Phillies Red on Saturday.  Starter Enmanuel Solano pitched six scoreless innings to earn his sixth win.  Solano allowed eight hits and struck out three.  Ramon Fernandez, Luis Tena, and Miguel Yedis each tossed an inning of relief to preserve the team shutout.

The offense got on the board in the third inning when Pablo Gomez singled to left and Jose Zapata doubled him home.  Malcom Nunez added a solo home run in the sixth.  In the seventh, Gomez reached on a fielding error, Zapata doubled, and a second fielding error scored Gomez.  Adanson Cruz singled to plate Zapata.  Zapata was 2-for-2 and Sander Mora was 2-for-4.

Mora was picked off and caught stealing for the sixth time in 17 attempts.

The Cardinals Blue are 42-18 on the season and are in second place in the DSL South.

DSL Cardinals Red 7, DSL Phillies White 6

The Cardinals Red edged the Phillies White in a one-run win on Saturday.  Starting pitcher Luis Ortiz went five innings and gave up one run on four hits.  Ronald Suarez tossed a scoreless sixth, then returned to start the seventh.  Suarez walked the first batter and was replaced by Roy Garcia.  Garcia faced four batters, walked three and gave up a single to another. The Suarez inherited runner scored on the second walk.  Garcia walked in another run of his own and was replaced with no outs and the bases loaded by Jhon Victorino.  Victorino allowed a Garcia inherited runner to score on a sac fly but got all three outs to end the inning.  Victorino returned to pitch a scoreless eighth.  Nelson Prada took the ninth and surrendered two runs.  Prada was charged with a blown save but also got the win when the offense stormed back.

The Red got on the board in the second inning when Luis Montano hit a leadoff triple and scored on a sac fly by Francisco Hernandez.  In the third, Joerlin De Los Santon doubled and came in on a single by Cristhian Longa.  Franklin Soto walked and scored on a Montano ground out.  Longa crossed home after a wild pitch.  Yowelfy Rosario led off with the sixth with a single, and came in on Erik Pena’s sac fly.

Finally, in the ninth, the Cardinals came back to secure the win with two runs, the first on an RBI triple by Claudio Ramirez. The winning run came home on a throwing error on a fielder’s choice out.  De Los Santo went 3-for-3.  Hernandez was 2-for-3, Ramirez was 2-for-5, and both Garcia and Rosario were 2-for-4. The latter scored twice.

De Los Santos stole his 22nd base in 30 attempts but was also caught stealing for the eighth time.  Rosario made a fielding error. Pitcher Ortiz picked a runner off first base, and catcher Garcia picked a runner off second base.

The Cardinals Red are 33-27 on the season and are in fourth place in the DSL San Pedro Division.
