The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s (Saturday’s) game in Pittsburgh that they have activated second baseman Kolten Wong from the 10-day disabled list and placed outfielder Dexter Fowler on the 10-day disabled list with a left foot fracture.

Wong, out since July 22 with a left knee inflammation, has missed 12 games. The second baseman made a one-game injury rehabilitation assignment with Peoria (A) on Thursday, going 0-for-3 with a walk.

Wong is batting .216 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 91 games this season and ranks among National League leaders with his 13 hit by pitches.

Fowler, 32, injured his left foot in last night’s series-opening 7-6 loss in Pittsburgh. This season, Fowler is batting .180 (52-289) with eight home runs and 31 RBI in 90 games.

All of that worrying over who would get sent down with Wong’s return ended when Fowler heard a “pop” in his foot Friday night.

Fowler’s injury opens up the potential for extended time for both youngsters – Harrison Bader and Tyler O’Neill – in the Cardinals outfield, which may not be a bad thing at all. The club had shown a continued commitment in the highly-paid veteran, but the expected results were still not there.

With the return of Wong – a stabilizing defender at second base – Yairo Muñoz may return to an infield reserve or perhaps will see more time at third base and in the outfield as a back up.
