The St. Louis Cardinals system went 4-4 on Saturday. Our Player of the Day is Peoria starting pitcher Alex Fagalde, who pitched seven scoreless, one hit innings, and striking out 10 in Peoria’s win over Clinton.
Results for games played Saturday, July 28.

The Redbirds lost in Las Vegas on Saturday. Memphis put up its first run in the second inning on an RBI single by Carson Kelly. In the fourth, Wilfredo Tovar doubled to plate two. Kelly drove in another run in the sixth on a double, and Tovar plated Kelly on a single. Kelly went 3-for-4. Tovar was 2-for-4.
In his Triple-A debut, starter Austin Warner pitched four innings and gave up five runs, two earned, on seven hits. Hector Mendoza tossed a scoreless fifth. Another first-time Memphis pitcher, Elniery Garcia, surrendered four runs in two innings. Conner Greene added a scoreless eighth. Garcia took the loss.
Oscar Mercado stole his 30th and 31st bases in 39 attempts. Mercado was also picked off second base. Tyler O’Neill made a fielding error. Mercado had an outfield assist.
The Redbirds are 67-39 and are in first place in the PCL Southern.

The Cardinals edged the Naturals at Hammons Field on Saturday. Fresh off the disabled list, starter Matt Pearce pitched four innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Junior Fernandez surrendered three runs in two innings of relief. Derian Gonzalez threw two scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher. Will Latcham pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the third inning. Andy Young hit a leadoff single and Tommy Edman followed with a single. Jeremy Martinez walked to load the bases. Randy Arozarena grounded into a double play and Young scored. In the fifth, Young led off with a solo home run. Edman singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. Martinez drove in Edman on a sac fly. Johan Mieses singled, John Nogowski singled, and Chris Chinea singled to plate Mieses. Evan Mendoza led off the eighth inning with a solo home run. One batter later Young hit a solo home run. Edman doubled, Arozarena walked and Mieses reached on a fielding error. Nogowski walked and Edman scored. Edman went 4-for-5. Young was 4-for-4. Mieses was 2-for-5 and Nogowski was 2-for-3.
The Cardinals are 48-58 overall, 15-21 in the second half, and are in third place in the Texas League North.

The Cardinals fell to the Tampa Yankees on Saturday. The Cardinals struck first in the second inning on a ground rule RBI double by Irving Lopez. Palm Beach didn’t score again until the seventh when Kramer Robertson plated Chase Pinder on a single. The Chiefs brought their final three runs home in the ninth, on a bases clearing double by Brian O’Keefe. O’Keefe went 2-for-5. Robertson and J.B. Woodman were both 2-for-4.
Another starter fresh off the DL, Ian Oxnevad, pitched five innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits. Yeison Medina followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief, yielding four runs, three earned, on five hits. Jacob Patterson secured the final two outs of the eighth but not without surrendering two runs on three hits. Medina took the loss.
Danny Hudzina made a missed catch and a fielding error. Pinder had an outfield assist. Oxnevad picked a runner off first base.
The Cardinals are 55-44 overall and 16-19 in the second half to put them in third place in the FSL South

The Chiefs were victorious at the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday. Starter Alex Fagalde pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while fanning 10 and walking none. Patrick Dayton tossed the final two innings and surrendered one run. Fagalde won his sixth game of the season.
The Chiefs scored in the first inning on a two-run home run by Yariel Gonzalez. Peoria struck again in the fifth when Zach Kirtley plated two runs on a single. In the seventh, Elehuris Montero added a solo home run. Gonzalez went 3-for-5. Montero and J.R Davis were both 2-for-4.
Jose Martinez stole his second base in two attempts for Peoria.
The Chiefs are 50-43 overall, 21-12 in the second half, and are tied for second place in the Midwest League Western Division.

The Spikes overcame the Lowell Spinners on the road on Saturday. The Spikes put up their first run in the second inning on a leadoff triple by Stanley Espinal and an RBI double by Justin Toerner. In the fifth, Nick Dunn singled in a run. The Spikes scored three in the ninth. Wadye Ynfante led off with a solo home run. Dunn later hit a two-run home run to right field. Dunn went 2-for-5. Ynfante was 2-for-4. Matt Duce was 2-for-3.
Starter Jake Dahlberg pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits. Dahlberg was the winning pitcher. Winston Nicacio tossed the final two scoreless innings to earn his first save for State College.
Dunn was picked off first base. Edwin Figuera committed a throwing error.
The Spikes are 17-23 on the season and are in fourth place in the New York Penn League Pinckney Division.

The Cardinals were vanquished at home by the Danville Braves on Saturday. Starter Kyle Leahy pitched five innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on 10 hits. Leahy struck out five and walked none. Jacob Sylvester contributed two scoreless innings of relief. Michael Brettell tossed a scoreless eighth and returned to start the ninth. Brettell gave up a run on a walk and three singles and was replaced with no outs by Enrique Perez. Perez gave up a three-run double, with all three runs charged to Brettell. Juan Alvarez retired the next three batters to end the inning, but the damage was done.
The Johnson City offense got on the board in the second inning on Carlos Soto’s double. Soto plated another run in the fourth on a sac fly. In the fifth, Nolan Gorman doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Leandro Cedeno singled to score Gorman. Cedeno stole second and came home on a single by Brandon Riley. Cedeno went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Cedeno stole his first base in one attempt. Kevin Woodall committed a throwing error and Gorman made a fielding miscue. Jonatan Machado had an outfield assist.
The Cardinals are 16-20 on the season and are in last place in the Appalachian League West.

After having Saturday off, the Gulf Cardinals will play two on Sunday.

DSL Cardinals Blue 9, DSL Angels 3
The Cardinals Blue defeated the Angels on Saturday. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Blue team put one run on the board on a fielding error. The Blue put up a crooked number with eight runs in the eighth. Malcom Nunez and Jean Selmo walked. Freddy De Jesus was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Ramon Mendoza walked to score Nunez. Alexander Samuel walked to plate Selmo. Jose Zapata was hit by a pitch and De Jesus scored. Darlin Moquete grounded into a force out to score Mendoza. With Pablo Gomez at the plate Samuel, stole home. Gomez then singled to drive in Moquete. Carlos Soler walked. Nunez doubled to plate Gomez and Soler. Nunez went 2-for-4. Mendoza was 2-for-3.
Starter Francis Ventura pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits while fanning seven and walking none. Leonardo Taveras surrendered three runs in the seventh and was charged with a blown save. Luis Tena began the eighth and got two outs before being replaced by Larimel Soriano, who secured the final out of the inning. Soriano returned to pitch a scoreless ninth and earned the win.
Moquete stole his ninth and 10th bases in 13 attempts. Samuel stole his second bag in two tries.
The Cardinals Blue are 33-14 on the season and are tied for first place in the DSL South.

DSL Cardinals Red 1 at DSL Mets2 10
The Cardinals Red lost a laugher to the Mets2 on Saturday. Starter Allinson Benitez pitched three innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Benitez suffered his second loss of the season. Roy Garcia surrendered four runs in 1 2/3 innings and was followed by Dionys Rodriguez with two outs in the fifth. Rodriguez allowed an inherited runner to score before getting the final out of the inning. Rodriguez returned to pitch the sixth and gave up a run on a double, single and two walks. Gabriel Contreras replaced Rodriguez with no outs and the bases loaded. Contreras allowed all three inherited runners to score. Contreras came out with one out in the inning and was replaced by Hector De Los Santos, who collected the final two outs of the inning. De Los Santos returned to pitch a scoreless seventh. Sebastian Tabata tossed a clean eighth.
The Red offense scored its only run in the seventh on a wild pitch. The offense managed only three hits, singles by Erik Pena, Franklin Soto and Luis Andujar.
Andujar made a throwing error. Garcia had a passed ball.
The Cardinals Red are 26-21 on the season and are in fourth place in the DSL San Pedro Division.
