The St. Louis Cardinals system was 1-6 on Saturday. Our Player of the Day is Peoria first baseman Yariel Gonzalez, who hit a three run home run in the Chiefs’ 4-0 win over Fort Wayne.
Results for games played Saturday, July 14.

The Redbirds were blanked by the Storm Chasers in a pitching duel in Omaha on Saturday. Starter Chris Ellis suffered his first loss in three decisions with Memphis this season. Ellis pitched seven innings and gave up one run on five hits. Andrew Morales pitched a scoreless eighth.
The Redbirds offense had six hits, all singles. Adolis Garcia was 2-for-4. Carson Kelly, Patrick Wisdom, Wilfredo Tovar and Edmundo Sosa each had one.
In his first rehab game with Memphis, left fielder Tyler O’Neill went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
Wisdom stole his 10th base in 11 attempts.
The Redbirds are 58-35 and are in first place in the PCL Southern.
Sunday’s game: at Omaha, Daniel Poncedeleon (8-3, 2.39) 2:05 CT.

The Cardinals were defeated by the Travelers in Arkansas on Saturday night. Springfield was held scoreless until the fifth when Ramon Urias hit a lead off double and Evan Mendoza followed with a single. As John Nogowski grounded into a double play, Urias scored. In the eighth, a throwing error brought a run home and Jeremy Martinez doubled to plate another. Nogowski doubled in the fourth and final run in the ninth. Mendoza went 3-for-5. Blake Drake was 2-for-3.
Starter Connor Jones pitched six innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on eight hits. Will Latcham followed with 1 1/3 innings in which he surrendered five runs on five hits. Latcham took the loss. Hector Mendoza pitched the final 2/3 of a scoreless inning.
Nogowski made a fielding error. Drake had an outfield assist.
The Cardinals are 38-54 overall, 5-17 in the second half, and are tied for last place in the Texas League North.
Sunday’s game: vs. NW Arkansas, Mike O’Reilly (2-4, 4.50) 6:10 CT.

The Cardinals were vanquished by the Mets at Port St. Lucie on Saturday. Starter Jake Walsh suffered his second loss of the season after pitching six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. John Kilichowski pitched the seventh inning and surrendered two runs on three hits. Estarlin Arias took the eighth and also allowed two runs on three hits.
The offense put up one run in the second inning and one run in the eighth. Stefan Trosclair drove in one run in the second on a single to left. In the eighth, J.B. Woodman doubled and Shane Billings singled him home. Billings and Chase Pinder were both 2-for-4.
Pinder stole his second base in six attempts. Billings had an outfield assist.
The Cardinals are 49-38 overall, 10-13 in the second half and tied for second place in the FSL South.
Sunday’s game: at St. Lucie, Evan Kruczynski (4-1, 3.81) 11:00 am CT.

The Chiefs blanked the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday night. All the runs scored in the third on Elehuris Montero’s sac fly, and a three-run home run by Yariel Gonzalez. No Chiefs hitter had multiple hits.
Starter Johan Oveido pitched his best game of the season to date, with six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, fanning seven and walking four. Robbie Gordon followed with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bryan Dobzanski tossed the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his fourth save. Oveido was the winning pitcher.
The Chiefs are 51-40 overall, 12-9 in the second half, and are in third place in the Midwest League Western Division.
Sunday’s game: vs. Fort Wayne, Paul Balestrieri (5-4, 5.04) 2:00 CT.

The Spikes were blanked at home by the Tri-City Valley Cats on Saturday. Starter Jacob Schlesener pitched three innings and gave up one run on four hits and took the loss. Franyel Casadilla followed with four scoreless innings. Will Changarotty pitched a clean eighth. Gabe Gentner took the ninth and surrendered one run.
The Spikes offense had just three hits, a double by Wadye Ynfante and singles by Cameron Knight and Lars Nootbaar.
Justin Toerner stole his fourth base in six attempts. Schlesener picked a runner off first base.
The Spikes are 11-17 on the season and are tied for last place in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division.

Johnson City 5 at Burlington 6

The Cardinals were edged by the Bees in Burlington on Saturday. Nolan Gorman hit a leadoff triple in the fourth inning and scored on a Leandro Cedeno single to get the Cardinals on the board. In the fifth the offense put up four runs. Jonatan Machado opened the scoring with an RBI single and Gorman followed with a two run double. Carlos Soto plated the fourth run of the inning on a single. Gorman went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Starter Dionis Zamora pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits. David Oca followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief in which he surrendered an additional run. Oca was charged with a blown save. Jacob Sylvester replaced Oca in the ninth and allowed the inherited run to score that gave Burlington the walk off win. Sylvester was the losing pitcher.
Cedeno was picked off second base.
The Cardinals are 9-14 on the season and are in fourth place in the Appalachian League West.

The Cardinals took a four-run home defeat to the Astros on Saturday. Starter Wilfredo Pereira lost his third game of the season after pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits. Ty Cohen followed with 3 2/3 innings of relief and surrendered three additional runs. Jose Geronimo tossed a scoreless ninth.
The offense got on the board with two runs in the first inning, on Andrew Warner’s two-run double. Warner doubled again in the third to plate another run. In the fifth, a run came home on a wild pitch. The final Cardinals score occurred in the seventh on a ground out by Josh Shaw.
Victor Garcia and Mateo Gil both committed fielding errors.
The Cardinals are 15-7 on the season and are in first place in the GCL East.
