Elehuris Montero has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for the period of July 2-8 after batting a cool .400 (10-for-25), including two home runs (in each of his last two games), nine RBI and six runs scored in six games.
Montero comes into Tuesday with a 13-game hit streak, the longest on the Class-A Peoria Chiefs this season and carries a 17-game on base streak as well. The 19-year old has 22 hits during the streak. For the season, the right-handed hitter is second in the MWL in total bases (148) and hits (93), third in average (.325) and fourth in RBI (54).
The Cardinal Nation’s Derek Shore offers a very impressive view of the third baseman from a career perspective.
Interesting stat on Elehuris Montero. He pushed his wRC+ over 150 this weekend, joining an impressive group of teenagers to post 150 wRC+ in the MWL this decade (min. 200 PA’s). Vlad Guerrero Jr, Corey Seager, Byron Buxton, Oscar Taveras, and Mike Trout are a few examples.

Last month, Montero was TCN’s no. 18 prospect with a bullet after ranking 36th over the winter and earned MWL mid-season All-Star honors.
The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic was TCN’s Gulf Coast League Cardinals 2017 Player of the Year and was also an all-star in that rookie league last season.
Montero was signed by the Cardinals as an international free agent on August 29, 2014.
