Peoria scores 5 runs in the 9th to win. A win or Clinton loss tomorrow clinches a playoff spot for them.
What’s odd about Poncedeleon is he was only charged with 2 earned runs out of 8. Not sure what happened for it go that way. Also, him getting called up and missing a start and not being used 1 iota probably didn’t help him tonight.
That callup and then being unused was a dumb move. He did not have to be added until this fall and what they did is burn an option Year.
Worrying about burning an option assumes Daniel will not be needed in St. Louis again this season. With 3 1/2 months of play still ahead, that seems unlikely to me.
Still though I don’t get it. Why do the cards select a contract and add a guy to the 40-man roster only for Matheny to not use him? He did it with Gomber earlier in the season and I think I’m forgetting another instance.
Unless they start selling players…

I recall a spell when he wasn’t used and we had that extra arm in the pen.
It is not unusual for a team to keep a long man in reserve in case of a blowout or extra innings game. No way to predict that need in advance. As we saw with Gomber, it works out over time. While there are plenty of things to question Matheny about, I do not consider this to be one of them. Had they gotten caught short of pitching in an extra-innings game, some would be all over him for not planning ahead.
