Mercado might have jumped AGarcia who is in an offensive tailspin. Garcia is alone, there are other top-40 prospects who are backing up from earlier success.
It’s really good to see Mercado backing up his 2017 breakout with another good season at the plate this year. IMO he’s a good 4th OF type to have in the system, if there is any playing time to be had in 2018-19 there. He might have even more in the tank, and be a starting CF if the bat keeps improving to go along with his speed.
Pena has 51 ABs for the Cards this season, that’s the most he’s had in 5 MLB seasons. He is holding his own offensively and appears to be an ideal backup for the Cards with Kelly and then Molina coming back. Should Kelly falter, Pena can step in temporarily without too much of a drop-off.
if Pham leaves in FA along with Ozuna…and Fowler moves on via trade…. would a STL team comprised of:
Bader, Oneill, Mercado…with ADGarcia and Arozarena on the bench really be all that bad?Especially if we could pair it with a big time FA SS (Machado) to anchor the offense?
With our future rotation and pen it seems(cheap and young and controllable) we are saving money there..if we could do that in the OF too we’d have a plenty of money to bolster the offense in the infield via spending money
I kind of like the idea of the super athletic and fast young outfielders (with a little pop from ONeill splashed in)

That isn’t a bad future lineup at all but at some point we really need to get a LH bat with pop. Our lineup needs more balance.
Getting rid of Fowler AND Ozuna will be a major task for the FO, and they seem to be not up on doing tasks. The FO doesn’t want to take responsibility for their two big $$ failures. Card fans are waking up to the fact that neither have helped this team much at all. Management is all in on status quo even if it means missing the post-season again.
Thankfully we have enough hope for next season when the younger guys will have the two sitting on the bench, and with some very good pitching arms moving up ’19 there will be a lot more success. Until then get use to seeing Fowler and Ozuna delivering nothing except disappointment.
Note: their value has dwindled into the minus column. NO team would even take Fowler for free. Think about that… AND what we’re paying him. Astonishing.
