Onyx, would you have released Alex Reyes after he had the same offense? I highly doubt it. You are doing a lot of firing for effect today. 😉
One big difference between major leaguers and minor leaguers is that the former are not tested for marijuana. Not defending it as Pearce had to know the rules, but here is another example where minor leaguers are handled differently. (Also, Pearce’s specific drug of abuse was not named.)
I don’t know when the suspension was determined but since Pearce was told not to report to camp it was probably some time ago. It may be the reason the FO was not willing to deal more starting prospects after Alcantara and Gallen were moved.
I believe that if there is another failing of a drug test, that’s it for Pearce. It ready is tragic since Pearce was pitching so well and coming into his own. The same death sentence applies to Reyes. I hope that that day never comes. Between the suspension, surgery recovery time and other injuries, Reyes’ contribution to the club has been disrupted. When he becomes 100%, I’m hoping we get what we have expected of AR for two years.
Several thoughts.
I doubt whether Pearce was there or not materially affected major league pitching plans, including trades. Pitching at the upper levels remains a strength.
Even if Reyes goes back to smoking dope, as long as he never returns to the minors, he will never again fail a test for it. How many major leaguers use marijuana is unknown, but going back to Darryl Kile and before, it is probably not as uncommon as some may think.
As noted before, the specific drug of abuse for which Pearce tested positive has not been disclosed.
