saw somewhere that Maitan might be made a FA because of all of this…weren’t we in deep for him before he went to the Braves? could we perhaps snag him?
Sort of a joke right? All the teams that would’ve signed these guys are restricted due to the two year limits, but you are allowed to use this years’ or next years’ int’l budget?
Here are the specifics, though which teams and what bonuses will be valid to sign the released players is unclear.

Kinda stinks since you would hope they would be subject to the money rules from the class they were in, but understandable. Would have been nice to get Maitan since I think the Cards were after him hard in 2016.
May be a better place for this discussion but isnt MLB giving up a lot of revenue by no longer having penalties for passing intl bonus signing amounts? What fund did those penalties go in to?
This whole situation makes you think MLB would be better off holding an International Draft or including the international players as part of the Amatuer Draft. It seems this would be much easier process to regulate for MLB. Way too many rules and way too much opportunity for someone to game the system.
An international draft would be easier and would give MLB more financial control, something they want, but they haven’t been able to get traction on the idea after trying for years. There are many challenges to be overcome before a draft that includes players from many different nations could be executed. Then there is the whole buscones-driven system of development and compensation, not to mention younger signing ages, and so on to be reconciled. The players’ union doesn’t care, since these players are as far from 40-man rosters as anyone can be.
CC, the money teams paid MLB for going over the international bonus limits was trivial compared to MLB’s overall revenue stream. It was trivial to teams, too, which is why so many blew right by their caps. MLB realized the best fix was to stop overspending entirely, which they implemented in the new CBA. Makes sense to me.
So, here is what the Braves prospects signed for. Obviously, the Cardinals should have a decent chance at the guys that signed for the $300k range. That’s 4.
A little bit less of a chance for the guys up to $1.2 M. That’s an additional 5.
Only $100k of the Cardinals $300k bids would count against the bonus pool. At a minimum, I would offer those 9 players $300k just to see what happens.

Some teams still on spending restrictions, basically hard caps on spending, and now the market is flooded with additional top players and one team removed from bidding on talent. I.e., increased supply of players, and decreased demand. The only good thing from a player perspective is that most of the top Cuban talent is now off the market.
I thought they only had about $1.3 million left, and they are still in it for Ohtani as far as we know.
Maybe they’ve already been ruled out of Ohtani, or they are going to trade for Dee Gordon and assume some of the international bonus pool money from the Marlins…

I think Manfred needs to take immediate action against the Braves. How about a ban from 2018 post season play. Based on NL team records, the NL Eastern division would have no team representation in this year’s playoffs, which would serve the Phillies right for tanking it these past couple of weeks…..Manfred could kill 2 birds with one stone here.
I know it is a joke, but worth clarifying that the new Grand Jury is apparently looking at MLB as a whole – so no one knows which teams are clean.
For me, the earlier Braves case was most noteworthy in that it was not written off as a “rogue” employee supposedly acting alone, but instead was condoned by the GM himself. The Nats and Red Sox are among other teams with prior international scandals.
