ParticipantIf Matheny goes with Gyorko this game and puts Martinez in RF, we will have an above-average hitter at every position.
Of course, I think DeJong could use a game off. He hasn’t hit as well in September and made an error last night (I didn’t see it though)
September 22, 2017 at 9:18 am #33710It was a bad error on a ball that never should have been thrown. It was a double play chance with the runner out at second, but the batter was already past first before DeJong threw the ball. It was way over Martinez’ head and went into the dugout.
Perhaps the errant throw was a result of him trying too late to stop his throw. Don’t know about the latter, just a guess, but it looked to me like another example of the defense trying too hard instead of making the smart play.
September 22, 2017 at 9:26 am #33714Looks to me like the league has caught up to DeJong. Bust him inside and he’s at a disadvantage. And the low outside breaking pitch as well. He’s almost another Grichuk at times.
September 22, 2017 at 9:57 am #33724DeJong definitely needs to learn the strike zone. Hopefully that comes with experience. Grichuk has not learned it, despite numerous big league ABs.
I like Martinez at first base. He’s brutal in the outfield; Chris Duncan-like. But he seems to handle first base quite well.
September 22, 2017 at 9:59 am #33725You might be correct Rat but I wouldn’t give up on DeJong yet. Despite all of the comparisons to Diaz I really think Paul is going to stick around and thrive. A better comparison is Trevor Story. His average may drop but the power is still going to be there and his defense should only improve. If we could obtain an elite SS a move to 3B might be good for DeJong.
Another thing that will help him is to drop him down to 6th or 7th in the lineup. That should take some of the pressure off. That is why obtaining a big bat or two this offseason is so important. The guys we have hitting 3,4,5 right now really shouldn’t be. They should be in a more comfortable spot in the lineup.
September 22, 2017 at 2:16 pm #33786If Jose Martinez had handled the ball cleanly getting it out of his glove then DeJong wouldn
t have been rushed to try and make the play.Still was a rookie mistake but Joses inability to get the ball out of his glove was a contributing factor.September 22, 2017 at 3:09 pm #33794PadsFS
ParticipantGrichuk’s numbers at SS would be an above-average player, especially given DeJong is a good defensive player.
He reminds me of Rougned Odor and young Alfonso Soriano more than anyone. Story is a good call though too.
I fully believe Diaz will find his stroke next season though and we will be alright at SS either way.
Looks like the lineup just posted:
Carpenter
Pham
Fowler
Martinez
Molina
DeJong
Wong
PiscottySeptember 22, 2017 at 3:10 pm #33795PadsFS
ParticipantNo Gyorko still, which is fine. Hopefully Piscotty steps up. I’d love to see him end the year with a bang.
September 22, 2017 at 6:25 pm #33809Bottom of the 1st, Cards up 1-0 though Pirates have a runner on 2nd with only one out…
September 22, 2017 at 6:42 pm #33811Top of 2nd, Cards now up 2-0, Brewers and Cubs just getting underway and still scoreless…
September 22, 2017 at 7:42 pm #33814Bucs tied the game in the 4th and the Cards went down in the 5th on just 5 pitches.
September 22, 2017 at 8:11 pm #33816Brebbia takes over in the 6th with score still tied, 2-2. No-decision for Wacha.
September 22, 2017 at 8:33 pm #33818PadsFS
ParticipantBowman….unreal
September 22, 2017 at 8:39 pm #33820Oddly, no one is up in the pen, so it is apparently sink or swim with Bowman with 2 on, 1 out in the 7th.
September 22, 2017 at 8:41 pm #33821Oh my. Bowman induced a tailor-made ground ball, but instead of the DP, DeJong underhanded the toss over Wong’s head. Error, run scored.
September 22, 2017 at 8:42 pm #33822Bottom of the 7th, Pirates now up 3-2, one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd…Cubs leading 4-3 in the bottom of the 5th…
September 22, 2017 at 8:43 pm #33823bccran
ParticipantDid you see what DeJong did with that ready made double play ball?
Matheny should be fired.September 22, 2017 at 8:44 pm #33824PadsFS
ParticipantWow well done Bowman but awful error by dejong.
September 22, 2017 at 8:46 pm #33825The error by DeJong was about the worst looking mistake you will see an MLBer make. LOL, it’s the kind of play that will make most beer leaguers feel better about themselves. Cards avoided disaster and gave up just one run though. Maybe DeJong will get a chance to make up for it at the plate.
September 22, 2017 at 8:56 pm #33826DeJong with a rough sequence. He can’t start a routine DP, then kills an inning a few minutes later by hitting into a DP. Gotta be better at winning time, especially against bad teams.
September 22, 2017 at 9:06 pm #33828Cards down 3-2 in the 9th, down to our last 3 outs, Piscotty hits a double then Bader runs for him, so runner on 2nd and no outs…Cubs and Brewers tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 6th…
September 22, 2017 at 9:10 pm #33829Gyorko made them pay with a pinch-hit RBI single. Tie game in the 9th.
September 22, 2017 at 9:16 pm #33830bccran
ParticipantMatheny started the runner, which prevented the double play and the leading run scored. Should we maybe give a little credit when credit’s due?
September 22, 2017 at 9:17 pm #33831Cards push another runner across to take the lead 4-3 in the top of the 9th, 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd…
