I just watched the highlights from Friday’s game, and the pitch that got Lackey fired up. It was NOT as clear a strike like some have made it out to be. Yes, it probably caught the zone, but it wasn’t exactly right down the middle.
This is the biggest game of the year for the Cardinals.

We’re getting into “must win” territory. Yesterday, every team fighting for an NL playoff spot won convincingly…except StL who fell face first. Gotta do a 180 now.
Clear strike? Not quite. Probably was a strike, but wasn’t a clear strike. It was one of those pitches that missed the target and the catcher had to reach for it. Those have been called balls a great deal of the time this year even though they are in the zone.
Point is for Lackey and Contreras to go ballistic over that was pretty stupid.
Speaking of calling balls/strikes, I’ll be very happy when we use technology to replace human error and personal interpretation of the zone. I say that, and for the vast majority of things, I’m a purist/traditionalist. I like pitchers taking their at bats, base runners hustling out of the box on routine grounders, hitters shortening up a bit on two strikes, defenders catching flies with two hands, etc. However, I find nothing charming about random interpretation of the the strike zone and blown calls. Technology could truly ensure a large degree of consistency and standardization of the strike zone.
If the track box was correct it was one of the worst calls of the year. Our problem was Martinez not keeping his cool. The botched double play may have cost us the game.

Fowler finally returns, but Wong’s sore back keeps him out again.

Wacha PAnother poor outing by our pitching staff coming up. This one by Wacha today. We absolutely have nobody that we can depend upon in a big game. Does Bob Gibson need to just hang around the team, hoping some of that toughness wears off on our pitchers? Can Alex Reyes be our one hope next year and beyond?

Give up an out with no intention of advancing the runner from third and no outs, plus take the bat out of Carpenter’s hand, all with one decision. Not smart.
Cards have four hits over the last two innings and no runs. It happens when you give away outs. This time Martinez gets picked off first. The last couple of years, Wrigley just has a way of bringing out the worst in the Cards. Gotta be smarter.
And here we go. 2-0 Cubs and they are threatening to score more.
This one is down the drink. And the season is down the tubes.
Bye bye 2017 and hello 2018.

And now the cubs make the Cards pay in the 4th. We have the makings of another bed wetting in Wrigley.
Odd to bring Sherriff in against Jay who hits lefties well. It took a nice play by Carp to bail Matheny out.
4-1 Cubs the final. Win tomorrow and there’s a sliver of a chance but its almost over with in 2017.
1-8 at Wrigley this year, assuming the Cubs win tomorrow. This and the four game sweep in Cincinnati about two months ago and that is pretty much what doomed the Redbirds in 2017.
Nine (9) runs in those four games at Cincinnati and now, in the two biggest games of the year, so far 3 runs in two games. No offense to speak of. This team needs a big bat in the lineup. Stanton would be a good choice.

Is it over? If somehow we could get on a roll and go 10-4, then we’d need the cubs to go 5-9 just to tie. Or does 11-3 vs 6-8 sound more feasible? That’s not even accounting for the Brewers. You might say we have the advantage of five more head-to-head against the cubs, but if you’ve been watching this year you know that just makes it all the more improbable. This was a must win series — disappointing to finish so softly. Yes, the Cards are pretty much finished.

Pretty clear who is the top dog in the division. But what to do about it?
The Cards need more fire power on offense. It us hard to win when you cannot score. Gone are the days of Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen. The front office needs to focus on getting one or two big bats to fit in with what players they want to hold on to.
