What do folks think?
The Springfield Cardinals are no more. The #stlcards' Double-A affiliate announced this evening that it will now go by the name “Ozarks Springbirds.” TCN's Jamie Santner reports from Route 66 Stadium. (free) https://t.co/HA5Gg9L8YF pic.twitter.com/BrbMc1Jd0b

ParticipantI dont have any issues with it. They get their own identity and will prob sell lots of merch. Plus it helps stir up a little excitement
October 6, 2026 at 9:31 pm #320540Ozark Mountain Daredevils sounds better. Seriously, would you like to be walking around in public in a shirt with a sweet little birdie on it with the bold word “SPRINGBIRDS”?

ParticipantWell kind of like walking around with a shirt with a redbird on a bat. Hmm.
October 6, 2026 at 9:42 pm #320550Just something about the name “Springbird”, Willie. The name “Cardinals” is much cooler.
October 7, 2026 at 12:25 am #320567I agree, Pugs. Can’t seem to ever be able to leave well enough alone. Not at all unlike those silly city uniforms that make you cringe and look away.

October 7, 2026 at 5:36 am #320570Seems like Ozark Cardinals would have been better.
October 7, 2026 at 7:42 am #320576Not a fan of that change, you’re flushing a long-held identity. Unless that team’s advertising contract or stadium land is being sold off and the new owners can’t use “Cardinals” in their merchandising efforts, why change something that was already way good?
October 7, 2026 at 8:00 am #320577I would rather it had stayed Cardinals, but the city owns the team so it’s theirs to do as they will. I wish they had picked a more clever, fun name if they were going to change it. It seems like they settled on a middle option where it’s sort of creative, but not too over the top. Over the top names seem to sell jerseys. This one is unremarkable.

ParticipantSome of all the minor league teams have wacky names. I think the Springbirds is now one of them. “Ozark” might attract more fans from the area especially during the summer months with all of the vacationers. “Springbirds” ugh. Whoever picked that moniker needs to see a doctor. At least there is a cardinal within their logo. Springbirds…… nope and nope.
October 7, 2026 at 9:37 am #320581A minor correction. The city does not own the team. It is owned by Diamond Baseball Holdings, a group that owns 49 of the 120 full season minor league teams including Memphis.
October 7, 2026 at 9:38 am #320582Maybe they’re being sponsored by the long time defunct Ozark Airlines or it’s a tribute to former Phillies manager Danny Ozark.:-)

October 7, 2026 at 12:47 pm #320610I’d go with Ozarks Redbirds…maybe they are fighting the Northwest Arkansas Naturals for the Branson crowd.
I guess the locals won’t turn on them to much though with Spring still in the name.
October 7, 2026 at 2:10 pm #320626They probably didn’t go with Redbirds since that is already used by Memphis. I’m not a big fan of going by Ozarks but I guess Springfield Springbirds would have been a little too much.
October 7, 2026 at 2:37 pm #320628I can’t wait to their mascot.
October 7, 2026 at 2:37 pm #320629When I googled “springbird”, it came back with “Spring Bird”…..a 14 acre wildlife sanctuary in the greater East Dundee and West Dundee, Illinois area. So then I googled “Springbirds” and then a plethora of articles popped up about the name change of our AA affiliate. I guess it’s not a big deal either way, but I still think the choice of “Springbirds” for a name of a baseball team is kinda lame.
October 7, 2026 at 2:40 pm #320630I can’t wait to see their mascot.
LOL Bling! You have to believe that the color pink will be mingled in there somewhere.
October 7, 2026 at 4:49 pm #320644The article in Brian’s post mentions Ned Reynolds of KY3 in Springfield. My goodness, his name brings back memories for me. Growing up in north central Arkansas as a kid most of our TV was out of Springfield and Ned was the sports guy on the nightly news as back as the early 70’s. I watched him every night.
I actually got to meet him in person once in the late 1980’s. I was a student at the University of Arkansas and went to a basketball game between the Razorbacks coached by Nolan Richardson and the SW MO St. Bears coached by Charlie Spoonhour. Ned was broadcasting the game for the Bears and I went down to the floor and shook his hand before the game. It was quite an honor.
I honestly didn’t know if he was still alive but I am glad to know that he is. He is a true legend.
October 7, 2026 at 4:53 pm #320646The mascots are in the article. They are carryovers.
October 7, 2026 at 5:56 pm #320654Everything else is new, they just haven’t gotten around to the mascots yet.
October 7, 2026 at 6:14 pm #320661I honestly didn’t know if he was still alive but I’m glad to know that he is.
Ned is indeed not dead, Scotty. Now they we have so much information right at our fingertips, it’s fun to Google memorable characters from our past. I’m constantly doing it. Just last night I googled my older sister’s high school boyfriend from Whitefish Bay. I haven’t seen Bobby Greenfield in over 40 years. Looks like he’s now living near our AAA affiliate in Memphis. Anyway, we all used to get a kick watching his uncle Shecky when he was appearing on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. Only we seasoned ones would remember him……Shecky Greene. Back to baseball.
