Yeah, playing out the string, and playing poorly at that. Most people are probably either looking at post season match ups, or have switched to football.
Just a few observations before the last home game of the ’26 season…The Cardinals begin the day at a season low water mark of 5 games below sea level with 7 games to play. I happened to notice that Walker hasn’t collected an RBI since Sept. 5th, so I’m guessing he figures 100 is a nice round number. The Cardinals will end up drawing just a shade over 2.2M which will in all likelihood place them at 11th in the NL. They’ve never placed lower than 6th in attendance during my lifetime or since the NL expanded to 10 teams in ’62. The BFIB should be mortified…
Edit…I neglected to consider that a lot of folks may be attending the Big Red or Rams game today…
An empty game thread. Quinn had a good day. He pitched efficiently and got 7 full IP which is rare to see in today’s game. 3 ER but still a quality start.
Leo Bernal with a huge home run in the bottom 8th of likely our last home inning at bat for the season. Gives the team a 2-run cushion after Herrera muscled up on one to tie it earlier in the inning.
Catcher is beginning to look mighty settled for the future.
Looking over the box score only 3 Ks in 7 IP for Mathews is unexpected. Gassy and Riley had clean innings.
Indeed Jnevel, Leonardo Abdiel Bernal with yet another big hit for us…..the guy is clutch! And speaking of “clutch”, we’d be remiss in not acknowledging Gassy’s sterling performance with his 2 K’s in his one inning of perfection. Tip of the cap to Herrera and his 2 thundering dingers and O’Brien notching another Save. Now let’s go on the road where we play our best ball and maybe win 4 or 5 of these remaining 6 contests before calling 2026 a wrap.
And what’s for din-din one may ask? It’ll be delivered din-din from the Flaming Wok. It seemed like Walker has not homered in quite awhile, and I see from 1TD he has not even RBI’d since Sept 5. That was two days before the two Giants-Cards games I saw in the City by the Bay. Even some contact last night in the ninth inning might have won that game, but he went down swinging on the dreaded outer half slider that he still bites on now and then. He’s been better going the other way on that this year, but the pitch last night was unhittable and out of the zone.
Din-din before the move is homemade chicken pot pie the Lovely Lady Bike is preparing, and your choice of store bought cherry pie or homemade carrot cake for dessert. Yours truly made the “from scratch” cake, although the cream cheese frosting is Duncan Hines.

If it is settled, it will be perhaps the most difficult box checked. I am excited to see how next season pans out.
Bernal looks like he can hit pretty good but, “you have to have a catcher because if you don’t you’re likely to have a lot of passed balls”…
True TD. I am just advising caution. Prior to today the sample size was 15 games. If the good side of that small sample can be extrapolated to say that it looks like catcher is settled, then it is equally valid to extrapolate the bad side, so lets see what that looks like. 4 errors over 15 games comes to 43 errors over 162. 15% CS% against league average 23%. Neither of those numbers will work. So lets get a grip and wait to see what happens.
