1901 – The Chicago White Sox hit a MLB record 5 triples in the 8th inning of a 9-4 drubbing over Milwaukee in the second game of a twin bill.
1914 – Cleveland star Nap Lajoie becomes the 3rd member of the 3000 hit club, hitting a single off Detroit hurler Pug Cavet in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers.
1922 – Butch Henline of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the first NL player of the century to whack 3 homers in a game, accomplishing the feat in a 10-9 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals.
1946 – The Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago cubs see their game postponed in the 5th inning due to a swarm of gnats invading Ebbets Field. Brooklyn was leading 2-0 at the time.
1950 – Johnny Mize drilled 3 home runs in a game for a record 6th time in the Yankees 9-7 defeat at the hands of Detroit’s Tigers.
1961 – The New York Yankees swat their 222nd round tripper, establishing a new ML record. The Yanks go on that day to split their doubleheader with Detroit.
1969 – Steve Carlton of St. Louis posts a record 19 strike outs, but is outdueled by Gary Gentry and Tug McGraw, as the Cardinals fall 4-3 to the New York Mets.
1978 – Phil Garner hits his second grand slam in 2 days, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Montreal Expos 6-1. Garner is the first NL player since 1901 to hit grand slams in back-to-back games.
1987 – Keith Hernandez records hit number 2000 in the New York Mets 12-4 trouncing of the Chicago cubs.
My dad and I listened to the game the night of Carlton’s 19 Ks. Two two-run homers by Ron Swoboda resulted in a Mets win. It was that kind of year for the Amazins.
I am hoping the Phillies edge out the Cubs for the #4 wild card seed. That way the Phillies would host the Cubs instead of having to play at Wrigley. But the Cubs have an advantage – the Brewers are at Philadelphia next week for a three game series. That will be a tough one.
With all of the tumultuous weather swirling about, if we ever needed one of Rat’s first rate meteorological reports, it’s for tonight’s game. I’m trying to make plans for this evening, but find myself in a total standstill until Rat’s weather report.
If Rat says there will be tons of that dreaded “green stuff” near the ballpark tonight, then I’ll be taking a little road trip on up to the Wisconsin Dells to have din-din at the Del-Bar. If Rat signals that they’ll be baseball tonight, then I’ll take the short trip on over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse for din-din.

It looks all clear for the big clash tonight at Busch. According to the Doppler Radar there is nothing currently in the area and nothing appears to be heading towards the greater downtown metropolitan St. Louis area.However, as we saw a few days ago, when it’s this hot and humid those popup thunderstorms can hit at anytime. It’s about 94 here in SW Indiana and it might actually be too hot for me to get out and jog a little later tonight before the Doyers and Reds game from Crosley Field.

It’s a nice and cozy 98 degrees here in StL. I don’t like the sound of the money pouring out of my checking account as the AC endlessly spins over, but it beats shoveling snow in Feb.
Pugs mentioning those record 5 triples in the 8th inning back in 1901 led me to take notice that Corbin Carroll currently leads all other players with 16 triples this season. If he can finish out the ’26 season and retain that lead, he’ll tie the all time record for most consecutive seasons as the leader in triples at 4 in a row. That’s pretty good. Corbin also just turned 26 years of age, so he’ll have a more than decent chance to tie or surpass the all time record as season leader in triples which is 6 and is held by HOF’er Sam Crawford who is also the all time King of the 3 base hit with 309 career triples. I like triples…
It’s going to be difficult for any team to attain 100 W’s this season. My guess is that it won’t happen.
I’m into triples too, TD. Kind of amazing that our Stan Musial(177) had more 3 baggers than the likes of Pete Rose (135), Willie Mays (141), Lou Brock (141) and Timmy Raines (113). One would never think that Babe Ruth amassed 136 lifetime triples, but no shock whatsoever seeing the great Ty Cobb with 295. But the all-time king of 3 base futility was Johnny Estrada who retired in 2008, registering 2,244 plate appearances……but never hitting a triple.

There is now a small band of showers that has popped up just west of St. Louis. Not sure if it will impact Busch Stadium or not.
Again, when it’s this hot and humid they can occur at any time.

I sensed from Rat’s previous report that trouble could be a brewing on the storm front for tonight’s game, even though local meteorologists and Dopplar radar gave no indication of weather disturbances. Have a great jog, Rat, while you leave all of those 20 and 30 year old joggers in the dust.

3B Jose Fermin ROne thing about the Babe, he was fast as a younger player. He is thought of as a fat guy, but really only in his last few years did he accumulate extra weight during the season. In his younger years he was in good shape, slacked off in the early ’20s, then got serious and engaged a personal trainer to get him back to physical peak from around the mid-’20s through around 1930, ’31 I believe.
Ugly early start to this one.
Yeah, Bikemike any photos taken before the latter portion of his career leave know doubt that he was put together rock solid. The Babe was anything other than built cheap.
Haha…Yeah, Pugs, even Molina collected 7 triples in his 19 year career. I never saw him leg out a triple in person, but I was once situated in a box seat and saw him try to score from 1B on an extra base hit in a game against the Phillies in ’12. The entire crowd was on it’s feet and going absolutely wild as Yadier was blazing around the basepaths. As he was rounding 3B it literally looked as though he was near to scattering a main bearing…The play at HP was close, but the HOF catcher was called out as the dust and sparks flew around the HP area. He got a standing O…It may have been the most humorous play I’ve ever seen at a baseball game!
Post Home Run Derby, Walker’s offensive stats have to be somewhat reminiscent of pre-2026……..or at least it seems so.

The Phillies have already lost 6-3 at Washington.
And the Cubs lead the Braves 3-2 in the last of the 6th.
Starting to look like the Cubs might get home field advantage in that short series.
This Eldridge fellow, though whiffing in this at bat, has a real nice swing. He should be around this game for awhile. Mautz with a perfect 6th, K’ing two.
Well these Giants hit us with 6 runs in the 8th inning in their park last week to pull one out of the fire. There’s no reason why we can’t return the favor in our park next inning(8th).
Only 10 games left in the regular season. These 162 games whizzed by so fast…..time…..time is going so darn fast. Back in grade school a summer went by at a snails pace, almost seemed like an eternity. Now with these days clicking by so rapidly it makes me feel like my goose is pretty much cooked. Well we’ll make the best of our remaining days good ones regardless.
