LHP Quinn Mathews (0-1, 3.00) vs RHP Andrew Painter (2-8, 6.43)
Cards.TV // KMOXAugust 22, 2026 at 10:58 am #316827I haven’t seen Rat’s greater Philadelphia meteorological report for today’s game, so I’m unsure how to plan my day yet. Over the years, I have learned to trust Rat’s weather reports…..and Rat’s only. If Rat writes that there will be a lot of “green stuff” encroaching Veterans Stadium today, then I’ll forego the game and head on up to the Del-Bar in the Wisconsin Dells for din-din. I’m super anxious to see Matthews pitch today, so I hope the “green stuff” stays away. This is a game that we should win. I’m calling it 7-4 Birds with JJ playing a little long ball to the tune of a majestic tater into the outfield shrubbery.
August 22, 2026 at 12:35 pm #316830Well Pugs, I am shaking off Jasper’s disappointing loss to Evansville Memorial last night. 48-14 was your unhappy final there.
And as I type this there is some green stuff just south of the greater metro Philadelpia area. Having said that, we are over four hours away from first pitch and there doesn’t appear to be much behind this cell just south of Philly.
I believe you will be able to see Matthews pitch. But remember, he’s facing a formidable lineup in a hitters park. And a team that has won seven (7) in a row.
And din-din today will be a Hungry Man’s Fried Chicken dinner with an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew. Then a big bowl of Turkey Hill Homemade Vanilla ice cream.

ParticipantI think this is prob a toss up game. Their starter isnt that great but they have a solid lineup and are kind of hot. Our pitcher is prob better though young, but offensively we have some issues. Matthews def needs to go long with our bullpen struggling. If not this smells like a sweep for philly. Watched a little of the brewers game today, they def got a solid team this season.
August 22, 2026 at 5:21 pm #316853Kinda sad looking at the 40k plus crowds in Philly and all the excitement in that stadium – think back to the long run the Cardinals had that atmosphere in StL – instead of a 1/2 empty stadium with no energy in the air.
August 22, 2026 at 5:24 pm #316854Wow Matthews getting hit hard on the 1st.
This one is over before it can even get started.

ParticipantNot the start matthews needed. Trying to be too fine to schwarber was really the main issue. Walk n hit to start game, did nice to get next two but not enough. Phillies have good hitters and got through to him with a single n double. Already lots of pitches thrown. 0-3 after 1.
August 22, 2026 at 5:34 pm #316856Quinn Mathews needs to bulk up. Spend more time working out. He’s not close to being ready for the big leagues. D
August 22, 2026 at 5:46 pm #316857There is nothing worse for a franchise than being stuck in the middle.
You are average. You don’t make the playoffs or if you do sneak in it’s a real short stay.
You don’t get difference making draft picks.
You just stay in pergatory.
August 22, 2026 at 5:58 pm #316858I actually think Matthews is pitching just fine. He was trying to be a bit too fine early and has wasted a few pitches but otherwise good. Just bad results. Sometimes that happens. It’s not like he can’t throw strikes or is out there throwing pitches down the middle. Baseball is the only sport where you can do well and still be terrible. It’s weird.

ParticipantI dont think thr cardinals are stuck in the middle. Their system is strong, i just think the fact the cardinals are close to the playoffs and the team has played well at times has given some a little too much over realistic expectations. To me this team has overachieved and never have i thought they were a real playoff team regardless of how many games they are within the playoffs. So to me they are still ahead of schedule and their future looks bright.
August 22, 2026 at 6:02 pm #316860Ok. That last one was right down the pipe. But mostly it’s been good pitches with bad results.

ParticipantTo me this inning speaks loudly to what ive always said about hitting. People talk about power numbers and strike outs not being a bad thing and just putting the ball in play not always a good thing. But this inning has proven that putting the ball in play and not trying to do too much is a very good thing. It dont always work that way, but ill take those percentages.
August 22, 2026 at 6:07 pm #316862Oli should send him out for the 4th. We need anothwr inning out of him regardless of the outcome.
This is Matthews official welcome to the bigs moment.
August 22, 2026 at 6:09 pm #316863If Raniel Rodriguez is as athletic as reported, he might be able to play third base. That ball that rolled down the line past Blaze Jordan would have been caught by several third basemen.
August 22, 2026 at 6:24 pm #316864About all you can say to Mathews is “welcome to the big leagues kid.”
August 22, 2026 at 6:47 pm #316865I actually think Matthews is pitching just fine. . . Just bad results.
10 hits in 5 innings is batting practice.
August 22, 2026 at 6:50 pm #316866Looks like rule 5 guy is getting hit around. Well, back out to tend the grill.
August 22, 2026 at 6:54 pm #316867Not a great night for our hurlers.

ParticipantWell fernandez def not looking good. Sometimes things dont go well. Phillies are a solid team. I dont consider them great but they have veteran guys. Just tip your hat n see how tomorrow goes. Save the best parts of the bullpen.
August 22, 2026 at 6:57 pm #316869Darn! Just when it was looking like we were going to stage a comeback, we find ourselves down by 10 instead of merely 7 runs.
August 22, 2026 at 7:01 pm #316870Basically just try and get one tomorrow. It doesn’t look promising.
August 22, 2026 at 7:06 pm #316871It definitely wasn’t batting practice Bling. At least not vs Matthews. Lots of balls that just eluded our fielders off awkward swings. Didn’t get much help from the D either. Blaze let one dribble by he probably should have had. Church let one drop in front of him. Baez let one drop in front of him. And Weatherholt missed a grounder going to his right that Winn would have likely gotten. I thought Matthews was far better than last game. But them’s the breaks kid. As several have said, welcome to the big leagues.
August 22, 2026 at 7:06 pm #316872Even though (somehow) this is a .500 baseball team, it sure feels like they absorb a lot more beatings like this then they hand out.
It happens to all teams over the the course of the season but the Cardinals don’t currently have the horses to be anything more than pesky and annoying to playoff caliber teams.
Maybe Bloom”s plan will eventually come to fruition – but there are no guarantees.
